Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is characterized by the episodic whitening of the fingers upon exposure to cold. A recently described thermographic algorithm was proposed as a diagnostic replacement of the currently applied finger systolic pressure (FSP) test. The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of the thermographic algorithm when applied in patients suspected of having RP. Forty-three patients were examined using thermographic imaging after local cooling of the hands in water of 10 °C for 1 min. The thermographic algorithm was applied to predict the probability of RP. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated with different cut-off levels. A new algorithm was proposed based on patients from the target population. The performance of the tested algorithm was noninferior to the FSP test, when a cut-off level of 0.05 was applied, yielding a sensitivity and specificity of 69% and 58%, respectively. The accuracy was 66%. The FSP test had a sensitivity and specificity of 77% and 37%, respectively, and the accuracy was 59%. The thermographic method proved useful for detecting RP and was able to replace the FSP test as a diagnostic test. The alternative algorithm revealed that other thermographic variables were more predictive of the target population, but this should be verified in future patients. The hormone abscisic acid (ABA) orchestrates the plant stress response and regulates sophisticated metabolic and physiological mechanisms essential for survival in a changing environment. Plant ABA receptors were described more than 10 years ago, and a considerable amount of information is available for the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Unfortunately, this knowledge is still very limited in crops that hold the key to feeding a growing population. In this review, we summarize genomic, genetic and structural data obtained in crop ABA receptors. We also provide an update on ABA perception in major food crops, highlighting specific and common features of crop ABA receptors.Bovine foamy virus (BFV) is a member of the foamy virus family in cattle. Information on the epidemiology, transmission routes, and whole-genome sequences of BFV is still limited. To understand the characteristics of BFV, this study included a molecular survey in Japan and the determination of the whole-genome sequences of 30 BFV isolates. A total of 30 (3.4%, 30/884) cattle were infected with BFV according to PCR analysis. Cattle less than 48 months old were scarcely infected with this virus, and older animals had a significantly higher rate of infection. To reveal the possibility of vertical transmission, we additionally surveyed 77 pairs of dams and 3-month-old calves in a farm already confirmed to have BFV. We confirmed that one of the calves born from a dam with BFV was infected. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that a novel genotype was spread in Japan. In conclusion, the prevalence of BFV in Japan is relatively low and three genotypes, including a novel genotype, are spread in Japan. The ten most statistically significant estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFRcrea)-associated loci from genome-wide association studies (GWAs) are tested for associations with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 208 patients, including dialysis-independent CKD and dialysis-dependent end-stage renal disease (kidney failure). The allele A of intergenic SNP rs2453533 (near GATM) is more frequent in dialysis-independent CKD patients (n = 135, adjusted p = 0.020) but not dialysis-dependent kidney failure patients (n = 73) compared to healthy controls (n = 309). The allele C of intronic SNP rs4293393 (UMOD) is more frequent in healthy controls (adjusted p = 0.042) than in CKD patients. The Allele T of intronic SNP rs9895661 (BCAS3) is associated with decreased eGFRcys (adjusted p = 0.001) and eGFRcrea (adjusted p = 0.017). DEG-77 Our results provide further evidence of a genetic difference between dialysis-dialysis-independent CKD and dialysis-dependent kidney failure, and add the GATM gene locus to the list of loci associated only with dialysis-independent CKD. GATM risk allele carriers in the dialysis-independent group may have a genetic susceptibility to higher creatinine production rather than increased serum creatinine due to kidney malfunction, and therefore, do not progress to dialysis-dependent kidney failure. When using eGFRcrea for CKD diagnosis, physicians might benefit from information about creatinine-increasing loci. The Fitbone® motorized nail system has been used to correct limb length discrepancies (LLD) for several years. This study focuses on its application in posttraumatic limb lengthening surgery, its outcome and challenges.

A prospective, single center study was conducted between 2010 and 2019 in patients treated with motorized lengthening nails. The inclusion criteria were symptomatic LLD of 20 mm or more. An imaging analysis was done using TraumaCad

software (Brainlab AG, Munich, Germany) to compare frontal alignment angles and limb length discrepancy (LLD) on preoperative and latest follow-up radiographs of the lower limbs.

Thirty-four patients were included with a mean age of 28.8 ± 9.7 years, a mean follow-up of 27.8 ± 13 months and a mean hospital stay of 4.4 ± 1.7 days. The mean LLD was 44 ± 18 mm in 29 femoral and 32 ± 8 mm in 4 tibial cases, which was reduced to less than 10 mm in 25/34 (74%) patients. The mean healing index was 84.6 ± 62.5 days/cm for femurs and 92 ± 38.6 days/cm for tibias. The meechniques is essential to prevent and manage complications.

Limb lengthening with a motorized lengthening nail for posttraumatic LLD is a relatively safe and reliable procedure. Full patient compliance is crucial. In-depth knowledge of lengthening and deformity correction techniques is essential to prevent and manage complications. The resistance of uropathogens to various antibiotics is increasing, but nitroxoline remains active in vitro against some relevant multidrug resistant uropathogenic bacteria. E. coli strains, which are among the most common uropathogens, are unanimously susceptible. Thus, nitroxoline is an option for the therapy of urinary tract infections caused by multiresistant bacteria. Since nitroxoline is active against bacteria in biofilms, it will also be effective in patients with indwelling catheters or foreign bodies in the urinary tract. Cotrimoxazole, on the other hand, which, in principle, can also act on bacteria in biofilms, is frequently inactive against multiresistant uropathogens. Based on phenotypic resistance data from a large number of urine isolates, structural characterisation of an MDR plasmid of a recent ST131 uropathogenic E. coli isolate, and publicly available genomic data of resistant enterobacteria, we show that nitroxoline could be used instead of cotrimoxazole for intervention against MDR uropathogens.
