To determine the long-term longitudinal axial length changes in myopic and hyperopic adults with an iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (pIOL).

The medical records of patients aged ≥18years with myopia or hyperopia who were treated with pIOL implantation between 1996 and 2011 for refractive correction with a minimum follow-up of 5years after pIOL implantation were analyzed. The main outcome measure was change in ocular axial length over time.

149 eyes of 149 myopic patients and 27 hyperopic eyes of 27 patients were included in this study. Mean patient age was 37.1±10.4years (35% male) in the myopic group and 39.4±9.4years (4% male) in the hyperopic group. The eyes of the myopic patients showed a significant mean increase in axial length of 0.45±0.61mm after a mean follow-up time of 144±38months (p<0.001). In 26 eyes (17%), the axial length had increased by ≥1mm. The mean annual axial length increase was 0.04±0.06mm. Axial elongation was associated with a higher degree of myopia (p<0.001) and younger age (p=0.02). The eyes of the hyperopic patients showed no change in axial length over time.

A previous study revealed that PPARγ agonists have anti-inflammatory effects in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Furthermore, some studies have shown that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) may elicit the development of RA. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether the use of thiazolidinediones (TZDs) is associated with a lower risk of developing RA in patients with T2DM.

Based on the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, we conducted a nationwide case-control study. The selected cases were patients with T2DM who were diagnosed with RA between 2000 and 2013. The controls were retrieved at a ratio of 14 by propensity score matching. find more Logistic regression was conducted to evaluate whether TZD use lowers the risk of RA in patients with T2DM. The dose-response effect was examined according to the total TZD dose, within 2years before the index date (the first diagnosis date of RA), and TZD doses were divided into four groups by cumulative Defined Daily Dose (cDDD) <30, 31-90, 91-365, and >365 cDDDs.

A total of 3605 cases and 14420 controls were included in this study. After adjusting for age, sex, baseline comorbidities, the results demonstrated that TZD use did not significantly reduce the risk of RA in patients with T2DM (adjusted OR=0.91, 95% CI 0.81-1.02). In the subgroup analysis by total TZD exposure dose within 2years, 91-365 cDDDs of TZD had a lower risk of RA development, aOR=0.87 (95% CI 0.71-1.06) and >365 cDDDs of TZD, aOR=0.85 (95% CI 0.73-1.01). In the trend test, P was <.05.

Here, we characterized miRNAs and their expression in Poecilia mexicana, a species of small fish that inhabits both normal streams and extreme environments in the form of springs rich in toxic hydrogen sulphide (H2 S). We found that P. mexicana has a similar number of miRNA genes as other teleosts. In addition, we identified a large population of mature miRNAs that were differentially expressed between locally adapted populations in contrasting habitats, indicating that miRNAs may contribute to P. mexicana adaptation to sulphidic environments. In silico identification of differentially expressed miRNA-mRNA pairs revealed, in the sulphidic environment, the downregulation of miRNAs predicted to target mRNAs involved in sulphide detoxification and cellular homeostasis, which are pathways essential for life in H2 S-rich springs.
