This study aimed to develop hypotheses on trends in malaria incidence in North Korea using malaria incidence among South Korean visitors to North Korea.

The number of South Korean tourists who visited Mount Kumgang from 2000 to 2008 and the number of South Korean employees at the Kaesong Industrial Complex from 2005 to 2015 were obtained from the Korean Statistical Information Service. The number of malaria cases among South Koreans who visited North Korea was obtained from a previous report. The incidence of malaria per 100,000 person-years was calculated using these data and compared with the malaria incidence in North Korea derived from published articles.

A high incidence of malaria in 2001 and a sharp decline in the following years were observed in both South and North Korean data. Since then, North Korean data showed a relatively low and stable incidence, but the incidence among South Koreans visiting North Korea increased in 2006. Considering the trends in mass primaquine preventive treatment, floods, and economic growth rate, the incidence of malaria may have increased in North Korea in 2006. Since 2009, the incidence of malaria decreased gradually according to both South and North Korean data.

The trends of malaria incidence in North Korea could be reflected through its incidence among South Koreans who visited North Korea. For future inter-Korean collaboration aiming to eradicate malaria, we propose that a North Korean malaria monitoring system be established applying this method.

To explore the correlation between the polymorphism of histone deacetylase 9 gene (rs1060499865, rs723296, rs957960) and ischemic stroke (IS) in Chinese Han population in Dali region.

This study included 155 IS patients and 128 healthy physical examinees. TaqMan-polymerase chain reaction technology and multivariate logistic regression were performed.

In the case group, there was no polymorphism of rs1060499865 observed in the two groups; whereas on the rs723296 locus the frequencies of C allele and TC genotype were significantly higher than that in the control group, alleles C and T were associated with a 2.158-fold increase in IS risk, and genotypes TC and TT were associated with a 2.269-fold increase in IS risk. The locus rs957960 exhibited no significant difference between the two groups.

An association between rs723296 and the risk of IS was found in the Chinese Han population in Dali region. No significant association was found between rs1060499865, rs957960 and IS in the Chinese Han population in Dali region.

To evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of different intraoral scanners on shade determination.

Ten different shades of Vita Mark II blocks were used. A disc-shape specimen (10 mm in diameter and 1 mm thick) per ceramic block was fabricated. Ten color measurements per specimen were performed by each instrument (Vita Easyshade V [control], 3shape Trios, Cerec Omnicam, Cerec Primescan) and recorded in Vita Classic color system. The number of correct shade match per instrument for each shade was recorded. Instrumental accuracy was compared using Cochran Q test and repeatability was analyzed using Cronbach's alpha.

There was a significant difference in the instrumental accuracy for shade determination (p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between the Easyshade V (78%) and the 3Shape Trios (66%) (p > 0.05), with the latter being similar to the other scanners Primescan(63%) and Omnicam (57%) (p > 0.05). No significant difference was found (p > 0.05) when different shades were evaluated by the same instrument. Similar repeatability was found for the different devices, ranging from 44.3% for Easyshade to 51.9% for Omnicam.

The evaluated instruments showed less than expected repeatability and accuracy on measuring different dental shades. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using instrumental shade determination, which should be accompanied by experienced human visual assessment.

The outcome of this study might help clinicians evaluate the performance of intraoral scanners as a shade matching tool.

Currently, the diagnosis of PKD is primarily based on clinical manifestations, with little objective evidence. Neuroimaging has been used to explore the pathological changes in cerebral structure and function associated with PKD. The current review highlights recent advances in neuroimaging to provide a better understanding of the neural mechanisms and early diagnosis of this disorder. Several studies utilizing single-photon emission computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography, and structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging have found significant localized abnormalities in the caudate nucleus, putamen, pallidum, thalamus, and frontoparietal cortex in PKD patients. These studies have also revealed alterations in interhemispheric functional connectivity between the brain regions of bilateral cerebral hemispheres such as the putamen, primary motor cortex, supplementary motor area, dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, and primary somatosensory cortex in these patients. In addition, proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 gene mutations can affect the functional organization of the brain in PKD. These results suggest that the neural mechanisms of PKD are associated with the disruption of both structural and/or functional properties in basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical circuitry and interhemispheric functional connectivity. PKD can be considered a circuitry/network disorder and is not restricted to localized structural and/or functional abnormalities. Multimodal neuroimaging combined with gene analysis can provide additional valuable information for a better understanding of the pathogenesis and early diagnosis of this disorder.

To explore socioeconomic status (SES) differences in patterns of doctor-patient communication within head and neck cancer clinics and why such differences exist.

Thirty-six head and neck cancer review appointments with five Physicians were observed and audio-taped, along with follow-up interviews involving 32 patients. Data were analysed using Thematic Analysis, and compared by patient SES (education, occupation and Indices of Multiple Deprivation).

Three main themes were identified (a) Physicians used more humour and small talk in their consultations with high SES patients; (b) Low SES patients were more passive in their participation, engaged in less agenda setting and information-seeking, and framed their clinical experience differently; (c) Low SES patients had different preferences for involvement, defining involvement differently to high SES patients and were seen to take a more stoical approach.

Low SES patients take a more passive role in medical consultations, engage in less relational talk and are less likely to raise concerns, but were satisfied with this. Physicians may adapt their communication behaviour in response to low SES patients' expectations and preferences.

A question prompt list may help low SES patients to raise concerns during their consultations. This may reduce inequalities in communication and health.

Only mesial roots were prepared with PTG and TS. Pre- and post-operative scans were performed using Micro-CT to provide volumes with a voxel size of 20 μm. Volumes, non-instrumented area, amount of transportation and centering ability in coronal, middle and apical third shaping time and procedural errors were recorded. TS and PTG increased the endodontic volume of 2.98 mm3 (±1.56) and 3.21 mm3 (±1.78) respectively with no statistical difference (p = .168) and no procedural errors. No significant difference was found concerning canal transportation among groups but only within the same group PTG (p value  less then  .001) and TS (p value  less then  .001). The mean centering ratio was significantly different only between the section levels for PTG (p value  less then  .001) and TS (p value = .01); it was significantly reduced in the cervical third. The percentage of untouched canal walls ranged between 29.78% (±15.145) and 36.60% (±11.968) respectively for PTG and TS with no statistical difference among groups (p value = .168). TS and PTG with post machining heat treatment were able to produce centered preparations with no significant difference or procedural errors. TS system provided a shorter preparation time than PTG files.

To investigate the longer-term effects of secukinumab 150 mg on fatigue in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in MEASURE 1 (up to 3 years) and MEASURE 2 (up to 2 years).

Patients with active AS were randomized to secukinumab or placebo in MEASURE1 (10 mg/kg intravenous [IV] followed by 150 mg subcutaneous [SC]) and MEASURE 2 (150 mg SC). Patients were naive to or had an inadequate response/intolerance to tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (anti-TNF-naive/ anti-TNF-IR). Fatigue was measured using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) scale. Relationships between fatigue response and baseline characteristics and clinical/laboratory variables were explored.

Significant improvements in FACIT-F scores from baseline were observed with secukinumab across both studies versus placebo at week 16 (P < 0.05). Improvements were sustained through week 156 (MEASURE 1)/week 104 (MEASURE 2). Significantly more patients reported fatigue responses (FACIT-F increase ≥4; observed datss of prior anti-TNF exposure.Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies are induced by pregnancy, transfusion, or transplantation. Serum from transplant recipients is regularly screened for IgG HLA antibodies because of their clinical relevance for transplant outcome. While other isotypes of HLA antibodies, such as IgA may also contribute to the alloimmune response, validated detection assays for IgA HLA antibody detection are lacking. Therefore, we modified the commonly used luminex screening assay for IgG HLA antibody detection (IgG-LMX) into an IgA HLA antibody screening assay (IgA-LMX). Optimization and validation was performed with IgG, IgA1, and IgA2 isotype variants of HLA-specific human recombinant monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Reactivity patterns of IgA1 and IgA2 isotype HLA-specific mAbs in IgA-LMX were identical to those of the IgG isotype. Cross-reactivity with IgG and IgM antibodies and nonspecific binding to the beads were excluded. Further assay validation showed the absence of IgA HLA antibodies in serum from individuals without alloantigen exposure (n = 18).
