Nanotechnology is in the spotlight of therapeutic innovation, with numerous advantages for tumor visualization and eradication. The end goal of the therapeutic use of nanoparticles, however, remains distant due to the limitations of nanoparticles to target cancer tissue. The functionalization of nanosystem surfaces with biological ligands is a major strategy for directing the actions of nanomaterials specifically to tumor cells. Cancer formation and metastasis are accompanied by profound alterations in protein glycosylation. Hence, the detection and targeting of aberrant glycans are of great value in cancer diagnosis and therapy. In this review, we provide a brief update on recent progress targeting aberrant glycosylation by functionalizing nanoparticles with glycan-binding molecules (with a special focus on lectins and anti-glycan antibodies) to improve the efficacy of nanoparticles in cancer targeting, diagnosis, and therapy and outline the challenges and limitations in implementing this approach. We envision that the combination of nanotechnological strategies and cancer-associated glycan targeting could remodel the field of cancer diagnosis and therapy, including immunotherapy. Two novel amphiphilic polyethylene amine terephthalate have been prepared via the glycolsis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The product, bis (2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate) (BHET), was converted to the corresponding dialkyl halide, bis(2-chloroethyl) terephthalate (BCET), using thionyl chloride (TC). This dialkyl compound was used for alkylation of dodecyl amine (DOA) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) or pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) to form the corresponding polyethylene amine terephthalate, i.e., DOAT and DOAP, respectively. Their chemical structure, surface tension, interfacial tension (IFT), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were determined using different techniques. The efficiency of the prepared polyethylene amine terephthalate to demulsify water in heavy crude (W/O) emulsions was also determined and found to increase as their concentrations increased. Mocetinostat Moreover, DOAT showed faster and higher efficiency, and cleaner separation than DOAP.Measurement procedures are not error-free. Potential users of a measurement procedure need to know the expected magnitude of the measurement error in order to justify its use, in particular in health care settings. Gold standard procedures providing exact measurements for comparisons are often lacking. Consequently, scientific investigations of the measurement error are often based on using replicates. However, a standardized terminology (and partially also methodology) for such investigations is lacking. In this paper, we explain the basic conceptual approach of such investigations with minimal reference to existing terminology and describe the link to the existing general statistical methodology. This way, some of the key measures used in such investigations can be explained in a simple manner and some light can be shed on existing terminology. We encourage clearly conceptually distinguishing between investigations of the measurement error of a single measurement procedure and the comparison between different measurement procedures or observers. We also identify an unused potential for more advanced statistical analyses in scientific investigations of the measurement error.A number of studies have reported that there is a high prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant faecal bacteria excreted by dairy calves. Although faecal shedding is influenced by a variety of factors, such as the environment and calf age, feeding milk with antimicrobial residues contributes significantly to an increased prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria, such as extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E.coli. As a follow-up to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Scientific Opinion on the risk of AMR development in dairy calves published in January 2017, this review aims to illustrate more recent research in this area, focusing on the period 2016 to 2020. A total of 19 papers are reviewed here. The vast majority assess the commensal faecal bacteria, E.coli, isolated from dairy calves, in particular its antimicrobial-resistant forms such as ESBL-producing E.coli and AmpC-producing E.coli. The effect of waste milk feeding on the prevalence of pathogens such as Salmonella spp. has also been investigated. Current research findings include positive effects on daily liveweight gain and other advantages for calf health from feeding waste milk compared to milk replacer. However, the negative effects, such as the demonstrable selection for antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, the shift in the intestinal microbiome and the possible negative consequences that these could have on global public health, should always be taken into consideration.Na+/H+ exchange factor-1 (NHERF1), a multidomain PDZ scaffolding phosphoprotein, is required for the type II sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporter (NPT2A)-mediated renal phosphate absorption. Both PDZ1 and PDZ2 domains are involved in NPT2A-dependent phosphate uptake. Though harboring identical core-binding motifs, PDZ1 and PDZ2 play entirely different roles in hormone-regulated phosphate transport. PDZ1 is required for the interaction with the C-terminal PDZ-binding sequence of NPT2A (-TRL). Remarkably, phosphocycling at Ser290 distant from PDZ1, the penultimate step for both parathyroid hormone (PTH) and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) regulation, controls the association between NHERF1 and NPT2A. PDZ2 interacts with the C-terminal PDZ-recognition motif (-TRL) of G Protein-coupled Receptor Kinase 6A (GRK6A), and that promotes phosphorylation of Ser290. The compelling biological puzzle is how PDZ1 and PDZ2 with identical GYGF core-binding motifs specifically recognize distinct binding partners. Binding determinants distinct from the canonical PDZ-ligand interactions and located "outside the box" explain PDZ domain specificity. Phosphorylation of NHERF1 by diverse kinases and associated conformational changes in NHERF1 add more complexity to PDZ-binding diversity. It has been demonstrated previously in the literature that utilization of PEF or a combination of a pulsed electric field (PEF) and ultrasounds (US) can facilitate dehydration processes and improve the quality of dried products even better than the application of thermal methods such as blanching. The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of red bell pepper subjected to freeze-drying preceded by blanching or PEF or US treatment applied in a single and combined mode. Furthermore, the freeze-drying was preceded by shock freezing or vacuum freezing performed inside the freeze-dryer as a result of pressure drop during the first stage of freeze-drying. All of the analyzed technological variants enhanced the drying kinetics when compared to the intact material. Freeze-dried bell pepper subjected to non-thermal pretreatment exhibited higher vitamin C, total phenolic and carotenoids content than blanched material despite the fact that blanching reduced drying time the most compared to all other analyzed methods.
