The vulnerability of fetus and newborn to MeHg-induced changes is extensively reported, making relevant investigation possible for alternative sample matrix for human biological monitoring for at this stage of life. This study aimed to characterize tissue change effects of environmental-experimental MeHg on salivary glands of offspring rats after pre- and postnatal exposure. For this, pregnant Wistar rats were orally exposed to MeHg (40 μg/kg BW/day) or only vehicle (control group), from the gestational period to the end of the lactation period. Salivary glands (SG) were collected from the offspring to analyze possible Hg levels and main findings by histopathological evaluations and CK19 and α-SMA immunostaining. The results indicated that Hg levels in SG of intoxicated offspring were associated with histologic abnormalities, such as acinar atrophy and an increase in the intercellular matrix among the acini, as well as damages in the architecture of epithelium and myoepithelial cells, evidenced by a decrease in immunostaining area. Thus, this is the first study to show in the literature the toxicopathologic findings on SG of offspring after pre- and postnatal exposure to MeHg. Moreover, it presents the SG as an attractive target to futures studies, mainly in children exposed to environmentally relevant doses.Although many studies have confirmed metabolic syndrome (MetS) is correlated with metal exposures, few studies have elucidated the associations of multiple metals with MetS risk. We aim to explore the relationship between serum 22 metals and MetS. We determined serum 22 metals using ICP-MS and used LASSO regression to select metals independently related with MetS to construct multiple-metals model. We further explored the dose-response relationship between positive metals and MetS by the restricted cubic spline regression. After screening by LASSO regression, serum 11 metals were selected to construct multiple-metals model in cross-sectional analysis, while 5 metals in longitudinal analysis. To identify the prevalence of alcohol and tobacco drug use among pregnant women and investigate their perceptions regarding advice from health professionals during prenatal care.

We used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design for this cross-sectional study; the study period was January 2017 to December 2018. Multistage random sampling resulted in the selection of 255 pregnant women assisted in primary care units and through the Family Health Strategy in a city in southern Brazil. Trained interviewers collected data on the use of alcohol and tobacco drugs and socioeconomic characteristics via a questionnaire. Qualitative interviews were performed with pregnant women identified as alcohol and tobacco drug users in the quantitative phase. Interviews proceeded consecutively until saturation was reached, followed by a thematic analysis of interview content based on Braun and Clarke.

The prevalence of smoking and alcohol use was 12.55% and 14.12%, respectively. From the 14 interviews conducted, five ca strengthening measures and establishing new strategies that ensure women's understanding, empowerment, and choices-from the beginning of childbearing age-regarding habits during pregnancy.
