Whether being treated for COVID-19 related complications or otherwise, patients, families, and healthcare providers are all enduring various impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The inpatient Palliative Care Service at the University of California, Los Angeles, has observed prevailing themes of isolation, rapid decision making, and multifaceted distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper discusses lessons learned and provides resources to mitigate these additional complexities to care being provided.Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating and behavioral disorder characterized with anxiety/depression, hyperactivity, behavioral impulsivity and psychosis. Most of the associated symptoms are related to the deficiency of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine 5-HT) stores. A deficiency of 5-HT can modulate dopamine neurotransmission in the striatum to elicit hyperactivity and psychosis in AN patients. Also, the release and availability of 5-HT are modulated by serotonin-1A (5-HT1A) auto-receptor. The present study investigates the role of striatal metabolism of 5-HT and dopamine in precipitating hyperactivity in the rat model of diet restriction (DR) induced AN. The role of tryptophan (Trp) in influencing the 5-HT metabolism and the mRNA expression of 5-HT1A auto-receptor is also investigated. We find that long-term DR for 38 days reduces body-weight in rats and produces hyperactivity, similar to AN. This hyperactivity is characterized by declined striatal metabolism of both, dopamine and 5-HT. The mRNA expression of 5-HT1A auto-receptor in the raphe nuclei is also decreased. Trp co-treatment improves these deficiencies in monoamine metabolism and alleviates hyperactivity. Interestingly, DR-induced changes in body-weights are not effected by Trp co-treatment. The study suggests that the striatal metabolism of 5-HT and dopamine and mRNA expression of 5-HT1A auto-receptor has an important role in the pathogenesis of AN. The finding suggests that co-use of Trp can prevent precipitation of AN by normalizing 5-HT metabolism.This manuscript illuminates the nuanced ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the pediatric palliative care social work role and clinical care in caring for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families throughout the country. Literature findings have instituted the role of hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of cognitive derangement in diabetes mellitus (DM). Hyperoside (HYP) is a flavanone glycoside reported to possess diverse pharmacological benefits such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The study explored whether HYP could mitigate DM-induced cognitive dysfunction and further elucidate on potential molecular mechanism in rats.

Streptozotocin/high-fat diet-induced diabetic rats were treated orally with HYP (50, 200 and 400 mg/kg/day) for six consecutive weeks. The blood glucose and serum insulin levels, Morris water maze test, intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test, and brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were determined. The brain expression of inflammatory nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), lipid profile and caspase-3 activity were estimated.

DM evoked hyperlipidemia, hypoinsulinemia, cognitive dysfunction by markedly increased AChE and reduction in learning and memory capacity. Brain activities of SOD and CAT, and levels of TAC and GSH were considerably depressed, whereas levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, NF-κB, caspase-3 and MDA were prominently increased. Interestingly, the HYP treatment dose-dependently abrogated the altered cognitive and biochemical parameters.

Sexual and gender minorities, inclusive of the LGBTQI2-S population, are at an increased risk for experiencing sexual assault yet the vast majority of empirical research on sexual victimization has been conducted through a hetero-cisnormative lens. Sexual and gender minorities likely have a unique experience of sexual assault compared to heterosexual, cisgender survivors, especially as it relates to their help-seeking behaviors post-assault. Through the use of Sexual and Gender Script Theory, this review explores barriers that sexual and gender minorities may experience when reporting sexual assault to the police, thereby impeding their access to equitable justice. Opportunities for future policy, practice, and research among sexual and gender minorities are presented.Despite mounting evidence that social factors and public policies affect state infant mortality rates (IMRs), few researchers have examined variation in IMRs associated with those factors and policies. We quantified disparities in infant mortality by state social factors and public policy characteristics. We hypothesized that some social factors and public policies would be more strongly associated with infant mortality than others, and that states with similar factors and policies would form clusters with varying levels of infant mortality. We examined associations of women's economic empowerment, health and well-being, political participation, reproductive rights, and work and family-related policies with state IMRs in 2012 and 2015, using indicators created by the Institute for Women's Policy Research. Methods included generalized linear models, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis. This systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to estimate the overall prevalence of Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in neonates with jaundice who were admitted to hospitals in Iran.

In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ISI Web of Sciences, and Iranian Local databases up to December 2019.We calculated Prevalence and 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) of G6PD deficiency as summary measures. We conducted subgroup analysis based on the sex and quality of studies, while meta-regression were applied for investigating the effect of years of studies and years of publication on the pooled prevalence. We applied sensitivity analysis to investigate the effect of excluding each study on the pooled prevalence estimation.

The total sample size was 9799 people. The pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency among neonates with jaundice in Iran was 7.0% (95% CI 5.5-8.5%). The results of subgroup analysis showed that, pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency among male neonate (12.1%, 95%CI 7.6-16.7%) was more prevalent that female (3.00%, 95%CI 1.1-4.9%). Based on the sensitivity analysis, lower and higher pooled prevalence of G6PD deficiency was observed 5.8% (95%CI 4.7-6.9%) and 7.3% (95%CI 5.7-8.8%) respectively by excluding each study.

The overall prevalence of G6PD deficiency was 7% in Iranian neonates with Jaundice. Prevalence was high in male and early hours of life. We recommend screening test for G6PD deficiency in neonates to prevent its complications.
