OBJECTIVE Multiple physical symptoms not attributable to known organic disease are common in all medical fields and associated with major personal and social consequences. This study investigated multiple physical symptoms according to the construct of bodily distress syndrome (BDS) and associated individual characteristics in the general adult population. METHODS A nationwide, population-based study of 100,000 randomly selected individuals aged 20 years and older, conducted in 2012. A web-based questionnaire formed the basis of the study and was combined with Danish national registry data on socioeconomic factors and medication and healthcare use. RESULTS 49,706 individuals completed the questionnaire. After exclusion of women indicating pregnancy, respondents reporting chronic disease and respondents over 65 years of age, 23,331 remained for analysis. Of these 23,331 individuals, 15.5% fulfilled the criteria for BDS. BDS positives were more often younger (20-40 years) and female. Self-rated health and self-reported functional capacity were impaired among these individuals. Linsitinib Fulfilling the BDS criteria was significantly associated with current or former smoking, overweight and obesity, low educational level and income, and unemployment. Moreover, individuals with BDS were more often from ethnic minorities and had higher use of healthcare and medication. CONCLUSION Multiple physical symptoms, as captured by the concept of BDS, are common in the general adult population, especially among younger women. Fulfilling the BDS criteria is associated with substantial negative impact on self-perceived health and socioeconomic parameters. Fulfilling BDS criteria is positively associated with health risk behaviors (smoking, overweight and obesity) and higher use of healthcare and medication. Crops, including cotton, are sensitive to nitrogen (N) and excessive use can lead to an increase in production costs and environmental problems. We hypothesized that the use of cotton genotypes with substantial root systems and high genetic potentials for nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) would best address these problems. Therefore, the interspecific variations and traits contributing to NUE in six cotton genotypes having contrasting NUEs were studied in response to various nitrate concentrations. Large genotypic variations were observed in morphophysiological and biochemical traits, especially shoot dry weight, root traits, and N-assimilating enzyme levels. The roots of all the cotton genotypes were more sensitive to low-than high-nitrate concentrations, and the genotype CCRI-69 had the largest root system irrespective of the nitrate concentration. The root morphological traits were positively correlated with N-utilization efficiency and were more affected by genotype than nitrate concentration. Conversely, growth and N-assimilating enzyme levels were more affected by nitrate concentration and were positively correlated with N-uptake efficiency. Based on shoot dry weight, CCRI-69 and XLZ-30 were identified as N-efficient and N-inefficient genotypes, respectively, and these results were confirmed by their contrasting root systems, N metabolism, and NUEs. In the future, multi-omics techniques will be performed to identify key genes/pathways involved in N metabolism, which may have the potential to improve root architecture and increase NUE. PURPOSE We aim to describe and review the management of pediatric aural foreign bodies (FBs). METHODS We performed an observational study and retrospective chart review with statistical analysis of management for patients presenting with aural FBs to the Emergency Department (ED) with or without ENT consultation, or presenting directly to the ENT clinic. RESULTS There were 166 objects in the ears of 155 children. Paper and beads were the most common objects. Micro-alligator forceps and small right-angle hooks were the most commonly used instruments for removal. 60% of patients had attempted removal prior to referral to Otolaryngology, who removed 72% of the FBs in the outpatient setting, 23% in the operating room, and 2.5% in the ED. CONCLUSION Taking into account certain characteristics of the object reflects an efficient manner in which to determine referral of difficult removals to Otolaryngology. Providers should determine if the FB is very hard or very soft and spherical or cylindrical with secondary consideration of cost to the patient and hospital in order to properly navigate treatment. Soft and irregular objects may be extracted without need for referral to Otolaryngology. Patients with aural FBs that are hard or round, in instances which previous attempts have failed, and/or where there is trauma to the ear should be referred to Otolaryngology to avoid worsening the position of the FB and increasing the chances of requiring removal in the operating room. X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is a one of most common retinal genetic diseases of juvenile progressive vitreoretinal degeneration in males, which caused by the mutation of RS1 gene. In this study, an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line was generated from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of a 13-year-old male patient with X-linked juvenile retinoschisis carrying a novel mutation in RS1 gene. The iPSCs exhibited iPSC morphology, expression of the pluripotency markers and in vitro differentiation potential, and the CSUASOi005-A iPSC line retained the original mutation (c.527T > A) of RS1 with a normal karyotype. Sea cucumbers attracted increasing interest due to its nutritional functions. Collagen is the most important structural biomacromolecule in sea cucumber body wall, and is highly related to the textual properties and food quality of sea cucumber. In this study, the type of constituent collagens of sea cucumber collagen fibrils was investigated, employing a commercially important species Apostichopus japonicus as the material. Proteomics and bioinformatics analysis revealed that collagen fibrils of A. japonicas are heterotypic. Two clade A and one clade B fibrillar collagens and two FACIT collagens were identified from the fibrils. Besides, the heterogeneity was also revealed in the pepsin-solubilized collagen (PSC) of A. japonicus by using the proteomics strategy. It implied that the previous conclusions on the type of sea cucumber collagen deduced from SDS-PAGE analysis should be rechecked. The results provided novel insight into the composition of sea cucumber collagen fibrils.
