Temporal and spatial heterogeneity in the distribution of cladocerans in lakes could be caused by abiotic (wind, water currents) and biotic factors (reproduction, food resources, predation). Diel horizontal and vertical distribution of cladoceran assemblages was studied in two deep lakes (Milada and Most Lakes, Czech Republic) in early (June) and late (September) summer. The objective was to study diel vertical migration (DVM) and diel horizontal migration (DHM) of cladocerans under conditions of different macrophyte cover in littoral areas (rich in Milada Lake, poor in Most Lake) and fish assemblages (non-specialised planktivorous species in Milada Lake, and abundant planktivorous fish - maraena whitefish, Coregonus maraena - in open water habitats in Most Lake). Temporal variations in cladoceran assemblages were reported in both lakes in the two sampling periods. DVM was observed in the two lakes, performed by the most vulnerable species to fish predation (the larger Daphnia spp.), but with different patterns (direct and reverse) probably linked with the local fish community and other biotic and abiotic factors in each lake. Horizontal movements were only observed in Most Lake D. longispina increase its abundance in open waters at night compared to the littoral points; while Ceriodaphnia spp. showed the inverse pattern. In both lakes, higher densities were often found at night in surface layers, producing a great "diurnal deficit" cladocerans remain undetected in some zones during the day (especially in the littoral areas) moving to surface layers at night.This paper focusses on the examination of the fishing ground footprint in a group of 89 countries using fractional integration. The fishing ground footprint is one of the components of the ecological footprint. Nevertheless, it has not been investigated very much from an empirical viewpoint. We contribute to the existing literature on fishing ground footprint by using fractional integration techniques to examine the persistence of the series. Our results are very heterogeneous across countries though we find that most of the series are nonstationary and non-mean reverting, with most of the countries belonging to the upper-middle and high income levels. On the other hand, most of the 14.4% of countries that show a stationary pattern belong to lower-middle and low income countries. One of the implications of the study is that policies aimed at reducing fishing grounds footprint are likely to be effective in most of the investigated countries.The robustness of anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) for synthetic textile wastewater treatment was investigated. Textile wastewater may contain high concentrations of NaCl and sulfate, hence their impact on the AnDMBR performance was investigated in detail. Organic and inorganic matters in the dynamic layer were characterized by SEM-EDS and FTIR analyses.The policy effect of environmental regulations on water pollution has been widely discussed, but few studies have empirically tested the relative effectiveness of heterogeneous environmental regulations-command-and-control environmental regulations and market-based environmental regulations-on water pollution control. Using the difference-in-difference method, this paper takes advantage of two Chinese policies-the National Key Ecological Functional Areas Policy (NKEFAP), which can be regarded as a command-and-control environmental regulation, and the Transfer Payment of Ecological Functional Areas Policy (TPEFAP), which can be regarded as a market-based environmental regulation-as quasi-natural experiments to examine the relative effectiveness of different environmental regulations on water pollution control. The results show that both the NKEFAP and TPEFAP can reduce water pollution, but the reduction effect is higher for the TPEFAP than for the NKEFAP. For underlying mechanisms, the NKEFAP and TPEFAP reduce water pollution mainly by controlling industrial waste discharge, rather than by controlling agricultural and domestic pollution. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that counties with higher initial pollution levels and higher economic levels have a greater water pollution reduction effect. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the effect of heterogeneous environmental regulations on pollution control and are conducive to future policymaking.

More women in reproductive ages are entering occupations where exposure to whole body vibrations (WBV) is common (e.g. in transportation and construction). Previous studies based on self-assessed exposure suggest increased risks of adverse birth outcomes, but it is unclear at what exposure levels and if the current exposure guidelines are appropriate during pregnancy.

To investigate whether occupational WBV-exposure increases the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, and/or small-for-gestational age, in a large, nationwide, prospective, cohort study.

Additionally, sea ice reduction in the Arctic is opening new opportunities for the oil and maritime industries, which could increase oil pollution in the region. Yet knowledge of the effects of co-exposure to MPs and crude oil on Arctic zooplankton is lacking. We tested the influence of MPs (polyethylene, 20.7 μm) on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bioaccumulation and oil toxicity in the key arctic copepod Calanus hyperboreus after exposure to oil with and without dispersant. Up to 30% of the copepods stopped feeding and fecal pellet production rates were reduced after co-exposure to oil (1 μL L-1) and MPs (20 MPs mL-1). The PAH body burden was ~3 times higher in feeding than in non-feeding copepods. Copepods ingested both MPs and crude oil droplets. MPs did not influence bioaccumulation of PAHs in copepods or their fecal pellets, but chemical dispersant increased bioaccumulation, especially of ≥4 ring-PAHs.
