Background and objectives Pulmonary vein (PV) reconnection is a major reason for recurrence after catheter ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). However, the timing of the recurrence varies between patients, and recurrence >1 year after ablation is not uncommon. We sought to elucidate the characteristics of atrial fibrillation (AF) that recurred in different follow-up periods. Materials and Methods Study subjects comprised 151 consecutive patients undergoing initial catheter ablation of PAF. Left atrial volume index (LAVi) and atrial/brain natriuretic peptide (ANP/BNP) levels were systematically measured annually over 3 years until AF recurred. Results Study subjects were classified into four groups non-recurrence group (n = 84), and short-term- (within 1 year) (n = 30), mid-term- (1-3 years) (n = 26), and long-term-recurrence group (>3 years) (n = 11). The short-term-recurrence group was characterized by a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus (hazard ratio 2.639 (95% confidence interval, 1.174-5.932), p = 0.019 by the Cox method), frequent AF episodes (≥1/week) before ablation (4.038 (1.545-10.557), p = 0.004), and higher BNP level at baseline (per 10 pg/mL) (1.054 (1.029-1.081), p less then 0.0001). The mid-term-recurrence group was associated with higher BNP level (1.163 (1.070-1.265), p = 0.0004), larger LAVi (mL/m2) (1.033 (1.007-1.060), p = 0.013), and longer AF cycle length at baseline (per 10 ms) (1.194 (1.058-1.348), p = 0.004). In the long-term-recurrence group, the ANP and BNP levels were low throughout follow-up, as with those in the non-recurrence group, and AF cycle length was shorter (0.694 (0.522-0.924), p = 0.012) than those in the other recurrence groups. Conclusions Distinct characteristics of AF were found according to the time to first recurrence after PAF ablation. The presence of secondary factors beyond PV reconnections could be considered as mechanisms for the recurrence of PAF in each follow-up period.Unhealthy diets contribute to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases, which are the leading causes of deaths worldwide. Nutrition policies such as front-of-pack labeling have been developed and implemented globally in different countries to stimulate healthier diets. The Choices Programme, including the International Choices criteria, is an established tool to support the implementation of such policies. The Choices criteria were developed to define the healthier choices per product group, taking saturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids, sodium, sugars, energy, and fiber into account. To keep these criteria updated, they are periodically revised by an independent international scientific committee. This paper explains the most important changes resulting from revisions between 2010 and 2016 and describes the process of the latest revision, resulting in the International Choices criteria version 2019. Revisions were based on national and international nutrition and dietary recommendations, large food composition databases, and stakeholders' feedback. Other nutrient profiling systems served as benchmarks. The product group classification was adapted and new criteria were determined in order to enhance global applicability and form a credible, intuitively logical system for users. The objective was to assess the impact of ascorbic acid (AA) on its in vitro bioavailability in comparison with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and ferric pyrophosphate (FePP). A simulated digestion coupled with the Caco-2 cell culture model was used in parallel with solubility and dissociation tests. Under diluted acidic conditions, the ICC was as soluble as FeSO4, but only part of the iron was found to dissociate from the caseins, indicating that the ICC was an iron chelate. The Caco-2 cell results in milk showed that the addition of AA (21 molar ratio) enhanced iron uptake from the ICCs and FeSO4 to a similar level (p = 0.582; p = 0.852) and to a significantly higher level than that from FePP (p less then 0.01). This translated into a relative in vitro bioavailability to FeSO4 of 36% for FePP and 114 and 104% for the two ICCs. Similar results were obtained from water. Increasing the AA to iron molar ratio (41 molar ratio) had no additional effect on the ICCs and FePP. However, ICC absorption remained similar to that from FeSO4 (p = 0.666; p = 0.113), and was still significantly higher than that from FePP (p less then 0.003). Therefore, even though iron from ICC does not fully dissociate under gastric digestion, iron uptake suggested that ICCs are absorbed to a similar amount as FeSO4 in the presence of AA and thus provide an excellent source of iron.Although initially regarded as a passive system to store energy, lipids are now considered to play crucial, structural and functional roles in almost all the biological processes involved in the regulation of physiological and pathological conditions [...].Identifying and developing inclusive policy and practice responses to health and social inequities in gender and sexually diverse persons require inclusive research ethics and methods in order to develop sound data. This article articulates 12 ethical principles for researchers undertaking gender and sexually diverse social, health, and related research. We have called these the 'Montréal Ethical Principles for Inclusive Research.' While writing from an international social work perspective, our aim is to promote ethical research that benefits people being researched by all disciplines. This paper targets four groups of interest 1. Acetohydroxamic Cisgender and heterosexual researchers; 2. Researchers who research 'general' populations; 3. and sexually diverse researchers; 4. Human ethics committees. This article was stimulated by the 2018 Global Social Work Statement of Ethical Principles, which positions human dignity at its core. It is critically important to understand and account for the intersectionality of gender and sexuality with discourses of race, ethnicity, colonialism, dis/ability, age, etc.
