Using this nanoprobe, the ·OH in living cells or in liver tissues could be monitored with high sensitivity and selectivity.PURPOSE Although common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is considered the most prevalent symptomatic primary antibody deficiency (PAD), there is a population with symptomatic PADs that do not meet criteria for CVID. We analyzed clinical and immunological profiles of patients with different PADs to better understand the differences and similarities between CVID and other PADs. METHODS We extracted clinical and laboratory data of patients with PADs from electronic medical records. Patients were categorized into CVID, IgG subclass 2 deficiency (IgG2D), IgG deficiency (IgGD), and specific antibody deficiency (sAbD) based on basal immunoglobulin levels and pneumococcal vaccine responses. We compared clinical and immunological characteristics in these groups. RESULTS All patients, regardless of PAD types, showed similar frequencies of infections, bronchiectasis, and interstitial lung disease (ILD). Hematopoietic malignancies were more frequently found in the CVID than in the IgG2D, IgGD, and sAbD groups, while the latter groups trended towards an increased frequency of connective tissue diseases (CTD). Low counts of natural killer (NK) cells were associated with malignancy, autoimmunity, and ILD in CVID but not in other PAD groups. CONCLUSIONS Higher frequency of hematopoietic malignancy in CVID than in the other PADs and association of lower NK cell counts with non-infectious complications in CVID suggest a relationship between immune alterations and the development of non-infectious manifestations in PADs.A recovery-oriented, cognitive behavioural workshop for service users diagnosed with schizophrenia was developed, implemented and evaluated in a pilot study. Further analysis is required regarding factors which contribute to better treatment response, as this will provide useful information for workshop adaptation. Secondary multilevel model analyses were performed to determine whether workshop and booster session attendance, as well as sociodemographic variables such as gender, age, education, and duration of illness, predicted workshop responsiveness. Results showed that completers had lower responsiveness to the workshop in terms of confidence and hope, whereas those who attended an online booster session demonstrated better responsiveness as to psychosocial functioning. Longer duration of illness and older age generally predicted lower intervention responsiveness. This study aimed to explore the effects of methamphetamine on the sexual lives of these people in Dhaka, Bangladesh. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted, comprising 30 in-depth interviews with gender and sexually diverse people including males having sex with males, male sex workers, and transgender women (hijra) under HIV intervention coverage. Ten key informant interviews were also conducted with individuals who have expertise in relevant disciplines such as drug use, harm reduction, and HIV and AIDS. Digitally recorded data were manually analyzed under the thematic analysis framework. Findings indicated that many participants reported that methamphetamine brought changes in their sexual lives such as increased sexual drive, engagement in group sex, the increased ability to perform serial sex, transactional sex, impulsive and coercive sex, initiation and switching of male-to-male sexual practices, and limited condom use. Key informants noted that there is a dearth of methamphetamine-related services in Bangladesh. Methamphetamine use was found to lead to diverse effects on the sexual lives of gender and sexually diverse people, thus making it a driving force for shaping sexual practices and, hence, sexual risks. Starting from the popular CMOS-compatible silicon nanophotonics in the infrared, many infrared guided-wave nanophotonic sensors have been developed, showing the advantages of high sensitivity, low limit of detection, low crosstalk, strong detection multiplexing capability, immunity to electromagnetic interference, small footprint and low cost. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent progress of research on infrared guided-wave nanophotonic sensors. The sensor configurations, sensing mechanisms, sensing performances, performance improvement strategies, and system integrations are described. Future development directions are also proposed to overcome current technological obstacles toward industrialization.Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) are highly affected by HIV and need novel prevention strategies. Using HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits to screen sexual partners may represent a viable risk-reduction alternative; however, more research is needed on effective strategies for broaching HIVST with partners. In the ISUM study, 136 MSM and TGW were given ten HIVST kits for self- and partner-testing. After 3 months, they returned for a follow-up assessment; thirty participants were also selected for in-depth interviews about their experiences initiating HIVST with partners. Most found proposing HIVST to a diverse array of partners relatively easy. They employed strategies such as joint testing and integrating HIVST into larger discussions about protection and sexual health, with moderate success. Nonetheless, real or anticipated negative partner reactions were a significant barrier. Future research can inform best practices for safely and successfully broaching HIVST with sexual partners.Syphilis and HIV among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are syndemic suggesting current prevention strategies are not effective. Sex partner meeting places and their networks may yield effective and optimal interventions. From 2009 to 2017, 57 unique venues were reported by > 1 MSM and 7.0% (n = 4), 21.1% (n = 12) and 71.9% (n = 41) were classified as syphilis, HIV or co-diagnosed venues, respectively. Forty-nine venues were connected in one main network component with four online, co-diagnosis venues representing 51.6% of reports and the highest degree and eigenvector centralities. In a sub-analysis during a local syphilis epidemic, the proportion of venues connected in the main component increased 38.7% (61.5% to 86.4%); suggesting increasing overlap in syphilis and HIV transmission and density of the venue network structure over time. This network analysis may identify the optimal set of venues for tailored interventions. It also suggests increasing difficulty of interrupting network transmission through fragmentation.Uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among Black women living in the US is suboptimal. We sought to determine the association between HIV-related medical mistrust (or belief in HIV conspiracy theories) and willingness to use PrEP among Black women. We analyzed data from the 2016 National Survey on HIV in the Black Community (NSHBC), a nationally representative cross-sectional survey. Among NSHBC participants, 522 were women and 347 (69.0%) reported HIV risk factors. link3 Only 14.1% were aware that PrEP exists; 30.8% reported willingness to use PrEP. HIV-related medical mistrust was reported by 60.4% of women. In multivariable analysis, controlling for income, education, marital status and health care engagement, belief in conspiracy theories was significantly associated with higher willingness to use PrEP. The HIV-Related Medical Mistrust Scale item "there is a cure for HIV, but the government is withholding it from the poor" was independently associated with higher PrEP willingness. This finding speaks to the need for an improved understanding of the role of HIV-related medical mistrust among Black women to improve uptake of biomedical HIV prevention.
