The contribution of the microbiome to pesticide breakdown in agricultural pests remains unclear. We analyzed the effect of pirimiphos-methyl (PM) on four geographically different cultures of the stored product pest mite Acarus siro (6 L, 6Tu, 6Tk and 6Z) under laboratory experiments. The effect of PM on mite mortality in the impregnated filter paper test was compared.

The mite sensitivity to PM decreased in the order of 6 L, 6Tu, 6Tk, and 6Z. Then, the mites were cultured on PM residues (0.0125 and 1.25µg·g

), and population growth was compared to the control after 21days of exposure. The comparison showed two situations (i) increasing population growth for the most sensitive cultures (6 L and 6Tu), and (ii) no effect on mite population growth for tolerant cultures (6Z and 6Tk). The microbiome of mites was analyzed by quantification of 16S DNA copies based on quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and by barcode sequencing of the V4 fragment of 16S DNA on samples of 30 individuals from the control and PM residues. The microbiome comprised primarily Solitalea-like organisms in all cultures, except for 6Z, followed by Bacillus, Staphylococcus, and Lactobacillus. The microbiomes of mite cultures did not change with increasing population density. The microbiome of cultures without any differences in population density showed differences in the microbiome composition. A Sodalis-like symbiont replaced Solitalea in the 1.25µg·g

PM in the 6Tk culture. Sodalis and Bacillus prevailed in the microbiomes of PM-treated mites of 6Z culture, while Solitalea was almost absent.

The results showed that the microbiome of A. siro differs in composition and in response to PM residues in the diet. The results indicate that Sodalis-like symbionts can help recover mites from pesticide-induced stress.

Mycobacteroides abscessus complex (MABC), an emerging pathogen, causes human infections resistant to multiple antibiotics. In this study, the genome data of 1,581 MABC strains were downloaded from NCBI database for phylogenetic relatedness inference, resistance profile identification and the estimation of evolutionary pressure on resistance genes in silico.

From genes associated with resistance to 28 antibiotic classes, 395 putative proteins (ARPs) were identified, based on the information in two antibiotic resistance databases (CARD and ARG-ANNOT). The ARPs most frequently identified in MABC were those associated with resistance to multiple antibiotic classes, beta-lactams and aminoglycosides. After excluding ARPs that had undergone recombination, two ARPs were predicted to be under diversifying selection and 202 under purifying selection. This wide occurrence of purifying selection suggested that the diversity of commonly shared ARPs in MABC have been reduced to achieve stability. The unequal distribution of ARPs in members of the MABC could be due to horizontal gene transfer or ARPs pseudogenization events. Most (81.5%) of the ARPs were observed in the accessory genome and 72.2% ARPs were highly homologous to proteins associated with mobile genetic elements such as plasmids, prophages and viruses. On the other hand, with TBLASTN search, only 18 of the ARPs were identified as pseudogenes.

The microbial symbionts of macrofungal fruiting body have been shown to play momentous roles in host growth, development, and secondary metabolism. Nevertheless, there is no report on the fungal diversity of Sanghuangporus, a medicinal and edible homologous macrofungus as "forest gold", which has good effects on antioxidation, boosting immunity and curing stomachache. Here, the diversity and functional group of fungi associated with the fruiting body of the most widely applied S. vaninii were characterized by high-throughput sequencing and FUNGuild tool for the first time.

Total 11 phyla, 34 classes, 84 orders, 186 families, and 328 genera were identified in the fruiting body, and our results revealed that the fungal community was dominated by the host fungal taxonomy with absolute superiority (more than 70%), namely, Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes, Hymenochaetales, Hymenochaetaceae, and genus of Phellinus corrected to Sanghuangporus. Simultaneously, the reads allocated into non-host fungal operational taxacrofungi and their associated endophytes.

Neuro-melioidosis, comprising 4% of all cases of melioidosis carries a risk of high morbidity and mortality. We describe two Sri Lankan patients presenting with long segment myelitis secondary to melioidosis.

Case 1 47-year-old male presented with right side hemiparesis which progressed rapidly to quadriparesis. Initial cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed protein 76mg/dl and glucose 72mg/dl but without a cellular reaction. MRI spine revealed long segment myelitis with contrast enhancement. The patient was treated with intravenous methyl prednisolone pulses (IV MPP) and plasma exchanges(PLEX) on suspicion of an immune mediated myelitis but without success. A repeat MRI revealed high signal changes in the brain stem and along the entire spinal cord with contrast enhancement. MRI brain after treatment with MPP/PLEX showed enhancing hyper intensities along the corticospinal tracts. The repeat CSF revealed protein 1187mg/dl, glucose 78mg/dl, lymphocytes 1600/mm3 and neutrophils 10,200/mm3. CSF cultureumerous neurological manifestations have been described with melioidosis, however long segment myelitis with a positive CSF culture is not yet reported. These cases signify the importance of considering melioidosis as a differential in patients with long segment myelitis especially in endemic areas.

Over the past few decades, the number of international students has increased dramatically. These students have to adjust to unfamiliar social, cultural, and educational environments. The concept of acculturation has been applied in multiple studies on various health outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between acculturation and self-rated health (SRH) among international medical students.

A cross-sectional study was conducted among international medical students at the University of Szeged, Hungary between April and October 2021. A total of 326 participants filled out questionnaires about sociodemographic characteristics, acculturation, and SRH. The modified Stephenson multigroup acculturation scale (SMAS) was used to assess the acculturation status; the scale defined acculturation as the degree of dominant society immersion (DSI, 12 items) and ethnic society immersion (ESI, 16 items). To measure SRH, participants were asked to rate their current general health and mental health. The data wnd their role in the behaviors, health outcomes, and health care use of medical international students. These findings will help professionals shape culturally sensitive prevention and counselling strategies for international student populations.

Both types of immersion can affect the students' SRH. If the student could integrate better into their own ethnic group, their general health was better, and if they could strongly integrate into the Hungarian society, their mental health was more favorable. Acculturation measures should be promoted by academics and public health professionals in order to better understand their role in the behaviors, health outcomes, and health care use of medical international students. These findings will help professionals shape culturally sensitive prevention and counselling strategies for international student populations.

Low postoperative mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO

) values have been linked to poor outcomes after cardiac surgery. The present study was designed to assess whether SvO

values of < 60% at intensive care unit (ICU) admission and 4h after admission are associated with increased mortality after cardiac surgery.

During the years 2007-2020, 7046 patients (74.4% male; median age, 68 years [interquartile range, 60-74]) underwent cardiac surgery at an academic medical center in Finland. All patients were monitored with a pulmonary artery catheter. SvO

values were obtained at ICU admission and 4h later. Patients were divided into four groups for analyses SvO

Kaplan-Meier survival curves, Cox regression models, and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were used to assess differences among groups in 30-day and 1% may be beneficial. Prospective studies are needed to confirm these observational findings.

To determine the levels of knowledge, awareness and perception of malaria, and to determine the infection status among asymptomatic adults in selected districts.

This descriptive, cross-sectional study recruited 849 participants from seven districts in the malaria meso-endemic forest zone of Ghana. Questionnaires were administered to elicit responses from asymptomatic adults on malaria awareness, knowledge and insecticide-treated net (ITN) usage. Capillary blood samples were taken from study subjects for malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) and microscopy. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse quantitative and qualitative data.

Ninety-eight percent of participants were aware of malaria, 94.0% owned ITNs but only 35.5% consistently used them. Also, 56.7% correctly associated malaria with mosquitoes and 54.5% identified stagnant water as the breeding site. Twelve percent (12.2%) and 13.1% of the subjects tested positive for malaria via RDT and microscopy, respectively. Of the 111 confirmed malaria cases, 107 had Plasmodium falciparum infections, two had Plasmodium ovale infections and there were two Plasmodium falciparum-Plasmodium ovale mixed infections.
