Preeclampsia is a dangerous disease of pregnancy with symptoms such as high blood pressure and proteinuria. The nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzyme produces nitric oxide (NO) as a mediator of vasodilation and need to calcium and zinc ions for activity. The thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) as an enzyme containing selenium has been neutralized the damaging effects of oxidants. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the activity of eNOS and TrxR enzymes and the amounts of calcium, zinc, and selenium elements in serum of women with preeclampsia.

Thirty preeclampsia and 30 healthy pregnant women were enrolled in the study after clinical examination and confirmation by Obstetrician-Gynecologist. Venous blood samples were collected and the activity of NOS, TrxR enzymes, and the concentration of zinc, calcium, and selenium elements were measured in serum.

The results of NOS and TrxR activities showed significant decreases in preeclampsia compared with control group (

<.05). In addition, concentrations of zinc, calcium, and selenium were markedly lower in preeclampsia compared to the healthy control group (

<.05).

This study identified the role of the NOS and TrxR activities in preeclampsia disorder and may be one of the ways to prevent and reduce the risks of preeclampsia in high-risk women using diet control and stress reduction.

Although the bombardment of planets and satellites by asteroids and comets has long been viewed as a destructive process that would have presented a barrier to the emergence of life and frustrated or extinguished life, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of data and observations on the beneficial role of impacts in a wide range of prebiotic and biological processes. Here, 136 published studies on the use of δ15N to identify nutrient loading in coastal systems were analyzed to identify key strengths and challenges when using this isotope technique. δ15N has been used successfully for this purpose around the globe for over 40 years. Studies have mainly used benthic macroalgae and sediment samples in estuaries and coral reefs of North America and Oceania. Strengths of this technique include timely identification of nutrient loading and its sources, even when inputs are pulsed or assimilated by biota, the benefits of varying isotope turnover rates in different types of samples, sporadic sampling efforts, simple collection and preparation of samples, and relatively low analysis costs. The shortcomings of this technique have led to a loss in popularity in recent times, mainly from isotopic overlap of potential sources and the effects of other confounding factors on isotopic compositions. These challenges can be compensated by simultaneous measurement of other key variables including additional isotopes (δ13C, δ34S), water column nutrient concentrations, and fecal coliforms, highlighting great potential to use this tool.

Resistin, a protein linked with inflammation and cardiometabolic diseases, is one of few proteins for which genome-wide association studies consistently report variants within and near the coding gene (

). Here, we took advantage of the reduced linkage disequilibrium in African populations to infer genetic causality for circulating resistin levels by performing genome-wide association studies, whole-exome analysis, fine mapping, Mendelian randomization, and transcriptomic data analyses.

Genome-wide association studies and fine-mapping analyses for resistin were performed in 5621 African-ancestry individuals, including 3754 continental Africans and 1867 African Americans. Causal variants identified were subsequently used as an instrumental variable in Mendelian randomization analyses for homeostatic modeling-derived insulin resistance index, body mass index, and type 2 diabetes.

In contrast to findings in some other ancestry populations, we showed that resistin does not seem to increase insulin resistance and related cardiometabolic traits in African-ancestry populations.
