The aim of this study was to evaluate the identification methods utilised at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM), which forms part of a coronial medico-legal death investigation system. The method of identification and time taken to complete the identification were reviewed for all cases admitted to the VIFM over a five-year period from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2020. The majority, 91%, of individuals admitted to the VIFM were visually identified. The remaining 9% of cases required identification by primary methods (i.e. fingerprints, DNA or dental) or, when those methods were not possible, by secondary methods (i.e. circumstantial). Visual identifications were the timeliest, taking an average of 1.5 days, whilst primary identification methods required an average of 5 days to complete. The triaging of identification methods, dependent on the case context, body preservation, availability of ante-mortem data, legal requirements and admissibility of the method, are determined by identification coordinators within the Human Identification Service (HIS) to ensure the most appropriate and timely method is employed. This review of human identification methods provides the foundation for future analyses to compare workflow processes and improve identification methods utilised in domestic medico-legal contexts.

Power outages, a common and underappreciated consequence of natural disasters, are increasing in number and severity due to climate change and aging electricity grids. This narrative review synthesizes the literature on power outages and health in communities.

We searched Google Scholar and PubMed for English language studies with titles or abstracts containing "power outage" or "blackout." We limited papers to those that explicitly mentioned power outages or blackouts as the exposure of interest for health outcomes among individuals living in the community. We also used the reference list of these studies to identify additional studies. The final sample included 50 articles published between 2004 and 2020, with 17 (34%) appearing between 2016 and 2020. Using various nitrogen sources, a discrimination in cell morphology between the two strains was found, of which the Δags1 culture exhibited mycelial growth as small pellets in contrast to the WT. Of them, sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate were optimal for lipid production of the WT and Δags1 strains, respectively, which the highest lipid concentrations of 7.2 and 7.9 g L-1 were obtained in the respective cultures. The mathematical models of the growth kinetics and lipid phenotypes of both fungal strains were developed, enabling to distinguish three lipid-producing stages, including low lipid-producing, lipid accumulation, and lipid turnover stages. The model validation showed good performances in all nitrogen sources tested for the WT, but only NaNO3 and mixed yeast extract/NH4Cl were fitted well for the Δags1. The difference in the period of lipid-producing stages between the WT and Δags1 indicated the metabolic alterations of A. oryzae by the defect of a gene involved in the cell wall biosynthesis, which exhibited benefits for bioprocessing practices in addition to the high productivities of biomass and lipid. To test the hypothesis that an accelerated, T1-weighted 3D CAIPIRINHA SPACE sequence with isotropic voxel size offers a similar performance to conventional T1-weighted 2D TSE (turbo spin echo) for the evaluation of bone tumor extent and characteristics.

Thirty-four patients who underwent 3-T MRI with 3DT1 (CAIPIRINHA SPACE TSE) and 2DT1 (TSE) were included. Sequence acquisition time was reported. Two radiologists independently evaluated each technique for tumor location, size/length, tumor-to-joint distance, signal intensity, margin/extraosseous extension, and signal-to-noise (SNR) and contrast-to-noise (CNR) ratios.

Tumors were located in long (20/36, 55.5%) and pelvic (16/36, 44.4%) bones. 3DT1 sequence required an average acquisition time of 235 s (± 42 s, range 156-372), while two plane 2DT1 sequences combined (coronal and axial) had an average acquisition time of 381 s (± 73 s, range 312-523). There was no difference in the measurements of tumor length and tumor-to-joint distance (p = 0.95) between 3DT1 and 2DT1 images.
