Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most important cause of death in older women. Although there is strong evidence in the literature that moderate lifestyle physical activity (PA) is effective in modifiable CVD risk factors, there is limited evidence demonstrating which activities are effective in women. This systematic review was conducted to evaluate the effect of lifestyle PA interventions on CVD risk factors in women. Various databases were searched for English articles from 2000 to 2019. Eight articles met the selection criteria. It is recommended to use different combinations of interventions including moderate PA, to reduce CVD risk factors in women.Meiotic recombination in most mammals requires recombination hotspot activation through the action of the histone 3 Lys-4 and Lys-36 methyltransferase PRDM9 to ensure successful double-strand-break initiation and repair. Here we show that EWSR1, a protein whose role in meiosis was not previously clarified in detail, binds to both PRDM9 and pREC8, a phosphorylated meiosis-specific cohesin, in male meiotic cells. We created a Ewsr1 conditional knockout mouse model to deplete EWSR1 before the onset of meiosis and found that absence of EWSR1 causes meiotic arrest with decreased histone trimethylation at meiotic hotspots, impaired DNA double-strand-break repair, and reduced crossover number. Our results demonstrate that EWSR1 is essential for promoting PRDM9-dependent histone methylation and normal meiotic progress, possibly by facilitating the linking between PRDM9-bound hotspots and the nascent chromosome axis through its component cohesin pREC8.VGX-3100 is an investigational DNA-based immunotherapy being developed as an alternative to surgery and ablation for cervical High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (HSIL) with the aim of preserving reproductive health while treating precancerous disease. Response durability up to 1.5 y following dosing is now reported.Histologic regression and HPV16 and/or HPV 18 (HPV16/18) clearance were previously demonstrated in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial and reported for 6 months after the last dose of VGX-3100 or placebo. The presence of HPV16/18, Pap smear diagnoses, and immunogenicity longer-term responses were assessed at 18 months after the last dose.91% (32/35) VGX-3100-treated women, whose cervical HSIL regressed and avoided excision at 6 months following study treatment completion, had no detectable HPV16/18 at 18 months following treatment completion. CC-99677 These results were comparable to those for women who received placebo and then later underwent surgery. For VGX-3100 recipients who regressed at 6 months following study treatment completion and avoided excision during the trial, Pap testing showed no HSIL recurrence at 18 months following VGX-3100 treatment. VGX-3100-induced cellular immune responses specific for HPV 16/18 E6/E7 remained higher than for placebo control recipients at 18 months. In women with cervical HSIL who responded to VGX-3100 and were able to avoid surgery, clinical outcomes were comparable to the placebo control group which underwent conventional surgical treatment. These findings extend the understanding of the durability of the treatment effect of VGX-3100 up to 1.5 y and support that VGX-3100 could be used as an alternative to surgery.Bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas spp. is one of the major diseases in tomato. Xanthomonas perforans is the main pathogen of bacterial spot on tomato in Florida. Currently, application of copper fungicides is the primary measure used to manage this disease. However, the development of copper resistance in X. perforans and accumulation of copper in the environment are major concerns for excessive use of copper-based products in agriculture. Due to its antibacterial properties and low environmental impact, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a small molecule commonly used in medicine for human bacterial diseases, has been studied in agriculture for the control of plant bacterial pathogens, including X. citri and Xylella fastidiosa. This study evaluated the effect of NAC alone and in combination with copper on a copper-resistant X. perforans strain in vitro and its ability to control bacterial spot of tomato under greenhouse and field conditions. In vitro, the minimum inhibitory concentration of NAC against the X. perforans strain was 2,048 mg liter-1. NAC increased sensitivity of the copper-resistant X. perforans to copper in vitro when application of NAC was followed by copper application after 6 h. In greenhouse assays, NAC applied alone or in combination with copper significantly (P less then 0.05) reduced the disease severity of bacterial spot on tomato compared with the untreated control. NAC at 100 mg liter-1 + copper at 300 mg liter-1 consistently exhibited synergistic effects against bacterial spot. In the field trials, NAC at 1,000 mg liter-1 + copper at 150 mg liter-1 significantly reduced disease severity compared with the untreated control. Results from this study demonstrated that NAC significantly reduced the disease severity of bacterial spot of tomato and enhanced the efficacy of copper against copper-resistant X. perforans, indicating that NAC could be applied for the effective management of bacterial spot of tomato.Powdery mildew (Podosphaera aphanis) is a destructive and widespread disease of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa), especially when susceptible cultivars are grown in high plastic tunnels or glasshouses. Many powdery mildews thrive in humid environments but free water films on plant surfaces can inhibit conidial germination of some species. We hypothesized that P. aphanis might be directly suppressed by rain through the action of water films and meteoric water. In repeated experiments, the hydrophobic conidia of P. aphanis collected on the surface of water droplets, resulting in their removal when the droplets rolled over the leaf surfaces and fell to the ground. Meteoric water and water films also damaged conidiophores. Brief midday water mists applied in pulses lasting 1 min each four times per day were as effective as multiple fungicide treatments in suppressing powdery mildew. Rapid drying of the pulsed mists resulted in effective suppression of powdery mildew without consequent increases of fungal pathogens that might benefit from water films.
