In addition, we have reported studies showing that WNT signaling pathways may be antagonized by PPARγ activation via the expression of different families of WNT inhibitors and through its direct interaction with β-catenin. In this review, we summarize the existing knowledge on WNT and PPARγ signaling and their interplay during the osteochondrogenic differentiation of VSMC in VC. Finally, we discuss knowledge gaps on this interplay and its possible clinical impact.Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy has been used to determine the nitrate content in aqueous solutions. However, the conventional water deduction algorithm indicated considerable limits in the analysis of samples with low nitrate concentration. In this study, FTIR-ATR spectra of nitrate solution samples with high and low concentrations were obtained, and the spectra were then pre-processed with deconvolution curve-fitting (without water deduction) combined with partial least squares regression (PLSR) to predict the nitrate content. The results show that the typical absorption of nitrate (1200-1500 cm-1) did not clearly align with the conventional algorithm of water deduction, while this absorption was obviously observed through the deconvolution algorithm. The first principal component of the spectra, which explained more than 95% variance, was linearly related to the nitrate content; the correlation coefficient (R2) of the PLSR model for the high-concentration group was 0.9578, and the ratio of the standard deviation of the prediction set to that of the calibration set (RPD) was 4.22, indicating excellent prediction performance. For the low-concentration group model, R2 and RPD were 0.9865 and 3.15, respectively, which also demonstrated significantly improved prediction capability. Therefore, FTIR-ATR spectroscopy combined with deconvolution curve-fitting can be conducted to determine the nitrate content in aqueous solutions, thus facilitating rapid determination of nitrate in water bodies with varied concentrations.Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a chemically pure product of cellulose mechano-chemical conversion. It is a white powder composed of the short fragments of the plant cells widely used in the modern food industry and pharmaceutics. The acid hydrolysis of the bleached lignin-free cellulose raw is the main and necessary stage of MCC production. For this reason, the acid hydrolysis is generally accepted to be the driving force of the fragmentation of the initial cellulose fibers into MCC particles. However, the low sensibility of the MCC properties to repeating the hydrolysis forces doubting this point of view. The sharp, cleave-looking edges of the MCC particles suggesting the initial cellulose fibers were fractured; hence the hydrolysis made them brittle. Zhurkov showed that mechanical stress decreases the activation energy of the polymer fracture, which correlates with the elevated enthalpy of the MCC thermal destruction compared to the initial cellulose. Two kinetic models which are applied for the description of metal ion transport in polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) systems are presented and compared. The models were fitted to the real experimental data of Zn(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) simultaneous transport through PIM with di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as a carrier, o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) as a plasticizer, and cellulose triacetate (CTA) as a polymer matrix. The selected membrane was composed of 43 wt. % D2EHPA, 19 wt. % NPOE, and 38 wt. % CTA. The results indicated that the calculated initial fluxes (from 2 × 10-11 up to 9 × 10-10 mol/cm2s) are similar to the values observed by other authors in systems operating under similar conditions. selleck chemicals llc It was found that one of the most frequently applied models based on an equation similar to the first-order chemical reaction equation leads to abnormal distribution of residuals. It was also found that application of this model causes some problems with curve fitting and leads to the underestimation of permeability coefficients and initial maximum fluxes. Therefore, a new model has been proposed to describe the transport kinetics in PIM systems. This new model, based on an equation similar to the first-order chemical reaction equation with equilibrium, was successfully applied. The fit of this model to the experimental data is much better and makes it possible to determine more precisely the initial maximum flux as the parameter describing the transport efficiency.Propolis is a resinous substance generated by bees using materials from various plant sources. It has been known to exhibit diverse bioactivities including anti-oxidative, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. However, the direct molecular target of propolis and its therapeutic potential against skin aging in humans is not fully understood. Herein, we investigated the effect of propolis on ultraviolet (UV)-mediated skin aging and its underlying molecular mechanism. Propolis suppressed UV-induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 production in human dermal fibroblasts. More importantly, propolis treatment reduced UV-induced MMP-1 expression and blocked collagen degradation in human skin tissues, suggesting that the anti-skin-aging activity of propolis can be recapitulated in clinically relevant conditions. While propolis treatment did not display any noticeable effects against extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), p38, and c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathways, propolis exerted significant inhibitory activity specifically against phosphorylations of phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase-1 (PDK1) and protein kinase B (Akt). Kinase assay results demonstrated that propolis can directly suppress phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) activity, with preferential selectivity towards PI3K with p110α and p110δ catalytic subunits over other kinases. The content of active compounds was quantified, and among the compounds identified from the propolis extract, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, quercetin, and apigenin were shown to attenuate PI3K activity. These results demonstrate that propolis shows anti-skin-aging effects through direct inhibition of PI3K activity.
