The navigation involves approach to each landmark in turn (taxis), using spatial view cells to identify the next landmark in the sequence, and does not require a topological map. Two other cell types found in primates, whole body motion cells, and head direction cells, can be utilized in the spatial view cell navigational mechanism, but are not essential. If the landmarks become obscured, then the spatial view representations can be updated by self-motion (idiothetic) path integration using spatial coordinate transform mechanisms in the primate dorsal visual system to transform from egocentric to allocentric spatial view coordinates. A continuous attractor network or time cells or working memory is used in this approach to navigation to encode and recall the spatial view sequences involved. I also propose how navigation can be performed using a further type of neuron found in primates, allocentric-bearing-to-a-landmark neurons, in which changes of direction are made when a landmark reaches a particular allocentric bearing. This is useful if a landmark cannot be approached. The theories are made explicit in models of navigation, which are then illustrated by computer simulations. These types of navigation are contrasted with triangulation, which requires a topological map. It is proposed that the first strategy utilizing spatial view cells is used frequently in humans, and is relatively simple because primates have spatial view neurons that respond allocentrically to locations in spatial scenes. An advantage of this approach to navigation is that hippocampal spatial view neurons are also useful for episodic memory, and for imagery.

We showed previously that a thick three-dimensional epidermal equivalent can be constructed with passaged keratinocytes on a patterned surface.

We first carried out computer simulations of a three-dimensional epidermal equivalent model built on close-packed arrays of 10µm, 15µm, 20µm, 30µm, and 60µm diameter pillars. Based on these predictions, we evaluated epidermal equivalents built on a series of porous plastic membranes bearing arrays of pillars 15µm, 20µm, 25µm, 30µm, and 50µm in diameter.

The simulations predicted that a model having near-physiological thickness would be formed on 15~30µm pillars. In the results of in vitro study, the thickest epidermal equivalent was obtained on the 20µm pillars. From an existing data set of 187 patients with anorexia nervosa across 22 eating disorder outpatient services in the United Kingdom, participants who had started treatment and had at least one body mass index (BMI) observation in the first 6 weeks of treatment were eligible for these secondary analyses (N = 65), a latent class analysis of BMI change over the first 6 weeks of treatment. Fifty-six patients showed no early change in BMI. We used logistic regression to examine predictors of good outcome in the 40 participants who had 12-month follow-up data. Predictors included global EDE-Q, negative affect (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales) and functional impairment (Work and Social Adjustment Scale).

Good outcome was achieved by 23% of patients and remission by 15%. Good outcome was predicted by less functional impairment at baseline.

Ovarian cancer is characterized by poor prognosis, high levels of distress, disturbed sleep, and compromised quality of life (QOL). Although life stressors have been shown to significantly impact physical and psychological health in cancer populations, no studies have used a high-resolution stress assessment to differentiate effects of acute versus chronic stressors among women with ovarian cancer. We addressed this issue in the present prospective longitudinal study by examining how acute and chronic stress exposure in the year pre-diagnosis relate to depressive symptoms, sleep quality, and QOL over the first year post-diagnosis in women with ovarian cancer.

One hundred thirty-seven women completed the Life Events and Difficulties Schedule within a month of initial treatment for suspected ovarian cancer. Depressive symptoms, sleep, and QOL were measured pre-treatment, at six months, and one-year post-diagnosis. Mixed models were used to examine associations of acute and chronic stress pre-diagnosis with (a) change in psychosocial outcomes over the first year post-diagnosis and (b) levels of psychosocial outcomes across all time points.

Both the number and severity of chronic difficulties (but not acute life events) were related to significantly greater depression, and poorer sleep quality and QOL, across all time-points. In contrast, these stress indices were unrelated to changes in psychosocial functioning over time.

Barrier films have been used for many years to protect skin from the damaging effects of excessive moisture and mechanical injury. selleck chemicals llc The performance characteristics important for these protective effects are mainly product durability and its ability to reduce the force of adhesive removal. The second-generation cryoballoon (CB2) provides effective and durable pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) associated with encouraging clinical outcome. The novel fourth-generation cryoballoon (CB4) incorporates a 40% shorter distal tip. This design change may translate into an increased rate of PVI real-time signal recording, facilitating an individualized ablation strategy using the time to effect (TTE).

Three hundred consecutive patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation were prospectively enrolled. The first 150 consecutive patients underwent CB2 based PVI (CB2 group) and the last 150 consecutive patients were treated with the CB4 (CB4 group). A total of 594/594 (100%, CB4) and 589/594 (99.2%, CB2) pulmonary veins (PVs) were successfully isolated utilizing the CB4 and CB2, respectively (p = .283). The real-time PVI visualization rate was 47% (CB4) and 39% (CB2; p = .005) and the mean freeze cycle duration 200 ± 90 s (CB4) and 228 ± 110 s (CB2; p < .001), respectively. The total procedure time did not differ between the groups (CB4 64 ± 32 min) and (CB2 62 ± 29 min, p = .370). No differences in periprocedural complications were detected.

Amphibians possess three kinds of dermal chromatophore melanophores, iridophores, and xanthophores. Knockout Xenopus tropicalis that lack the pigmentation of melanophores and iridophores have been reported. The identification of the causal genes for xanthophore pigmentation or differentiation could lead to the creation of a see-through frog without three chromatophores. The genes causing xanthophore differentiation mutants are slc2a11b and slc2a15b in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes).

To obtain a heritable line of X tropicalis mutants without yellow pigment, we generated slc2a7 and slc2a15a knockout animals because they have the greatest similarity to the O latipes slc2a11b and slc2a15b genes. The slc2a7 knockout frog had a bluish skin and there were no visible yellow pigments in stereo microscope and skin section observations. Furthermore, no pterinosomes, which are characteristic of xanthophores, were observed via transmission electron microscopy in the skin of knockout animals.
