The present study shows that the use of copper iodide complexes as cross-linkers in polymeric materials is a relevant strategy to design materials with enhanced functionalities in addition to their low cost and sustainable characteristics.In this paper, we prepared a novel double-layer Perilla essential oil composite membrane microcapsule (PEOCM) by the composite methods of complex coacervation and interface polymerization. The particle size distribution, morphology, pressure resistance, thermal stability, and elemental proportions of the microcapsule shell of the obtained microcapsules were characterized by laser particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic rheometer, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy spectrometer. In order to further examine the application effect of the PEOCM, we carried out a fresh-keeping experiment on nectarines. The results showed that the average volume diameter of the microcapsules was 226.9 µm, with a completely spherical shape and a slight depression on the surface and had good pressure resistance and thermal stability. The results also demonstrated that microencapsulation does not change the composition of Perilla essential oil, and the polyurea membrane with amide structure (-NH-CO-NH-) was formed successfully. Furthermore, the total soluble solids content and peroxidase activity of nectarines indicated that the PEOCM can be a preservative of food. In this study, we investigated the effect of an extract, obtained from olive tree (Olea europaea L.) leaves (OLE), on proliferation, invasion, and epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) on metastatic melanoma, the highly aggressive form of skin cancer and the deadliest diseases. Our results demonstrated that OLE inhibited melanoma cells proliferation through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptotic cell death. Moreover, OLE suppressed the migration, invasion, and colonies formation of human melanoma cells. Similar to our in vitro findings, we demonstrated that the oral administration of OLE inhibited cutaneous tumor growth and lung metastasis formation in vivo by modulating the expression of EMT related factors. In addition, the anti-proliferative and anti-invasive effects of OLE against melanoma were also related to a simultaneous targeting of mitogen-activated protein kinase and PI3K pathways, both in vitro and in vivo. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risk of psychological distress for older adults during a period of reduced access to mental health support. We identified predictors of persistent depressive and anxiety symptoms among older adults throughout the initial 9 months of the pandemic.

This was a longitudinal study using web-based surveys sent to a convenience sample of Canadians aged ≥55 years. A baseline survey was sent in May 2020, with eight surveys sent monthly between June 2020 and January 2021. Data were separated into three study periods, corresponding to coronavirus case rates. Respondents who met predetermined thresholds for elevated depressive or anxiety symptoms using standardized mental health scales during all three periods were defined as having persistent symptoms. Beta-blockers have gradually become an attractive option for the treatment of infantile hemangiomas. Seventy-four infants admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from 2018 to 2019 were observed and recorded. Variables such as color, size, tension, and thickness were recorded monthly and evaluated using visual analog scales. Multi-factor analysis of variance with repeated measurements and the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis H test were used to compare clinical effectiveness across the different groups.

After 6 months of treatment, 33.78% (25/74) showed excellent results, 55.41% (41/74) had good responses, 8.11% (6/74) had moderate responses, and 2.70% (2/74) had poor responses. Local discomfort and systemic complications were not found. There was no significant difference in gender and location of occurrence among groups (p > 0.05), and the effect of topical application of betaxolol was optimum in the children aged 0-3 months (p=0.002). However, its safety and efficacy need further research.Since the application of immune checkpoint therapy (ICT) has gradually become a new strategy for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) treatment, biomarkers that predict the individual response to ICT is needed. This study aimed to identify a new clinical indicator for postoperative surveillance of ccRCC and prediction of ICT response. We investigated the GBP2 expression and its relation with immune cell infiltration in tumor microenvironment using public databases, clinical specimens and ccRCC cell lines. Bioinformatic analysis using public database revealed that GBP2 expression is higher in cancer tissues than in adherent normal tissues among different cancer types including ccRCC, and the same results were acquired from clinical tissue samples tested by Western Blot and PCR. In ccRCC cell lines, CCk-8 proliferation assay and apoptosis assessment suggested GBP2 facilitates the malignancy of ccRCC. 286 ccRCC patients were randomly divided into a training or validation cohort, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that higher GBP2 expression is related to worse prognosis. C-index analysis implied that integrating GBP2 expression with TNM stage improved the accuracy in predicting prognosis of ccRCC patients compared to the solitary use of either. Bioinformatic analysis implied a relation between GBP2 and immunity, and GBP2 expression is positively related with suppressive immune markers in ccRCC microenvironment. Taken together, our study demonstrated the potential of GBP2 to sever as a prognostic predictor of ccRCC, and an association between GBP2 and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in ccRCC was observed, making it a promising indicator of ICT response.

Cardiogenic shock (CS) is a life-threatening condition due to primary cardiac dysfunction. First-line therapy involves drug administration (including inotropes and/or vasopressors) up to mechanical circulatory support. Tachycardia is a frequent compensatory mechanism in response to hypotension and low cardiac output or a side effect related to inotropic drugs. Ivabradine selectively acts on the IKf channel in the sinoatrial node to reduce sinus heart rate without affecting inotropism. Its use, in small non-randomized series of patients with CS without mechanical circulatory support, was safe and well tolerated.

We present the use of ivabradine in six patients with CS undertaking veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) and a matched cohort of selected patients with similar features who did not receive ivabradine. Data regarding haemodynamic and echocardiographic monitoring, oxygenation, renal function, mechanical circulatory support, inotropes, and vasopressors doses were collected before (t0), at 12 (t1), 24 (t2), and 48 (t3) h after ivabradine administration. Ivabradine administration led to a significant heart rate reduction of 20.83 [95% confidence interval (CI) -27.2 to -14.4] b.p.m. (<0.01). Echo-derived left ventricular native stroke volume (SV) significantly increased by +7.83 (95% CI 4.74-10.93) mL (P < 0.001) with a parallel reduction of VA-ECMO support [-170 (95% CI -225.05 to -114.95)].
