XFCT performance was evaluated on a small-animal-sized phantom model, demonstrating the possibility of quantitative evaluation of the measured dose with an expected linear response. This work provides a detailed route for the synthesis, size control and characterization of two materials systems as viable contrast agents for XFCT bio-imaging.In order to improve the suitability of NaBH4 as a clean fuel, its decomposition temperature needs to be decreased to below 535 °C, while its hydrogen release must be as high as possible. In this work, the influence of a collection of first and second period transition metal fluorides on the destabilization of NaBH4 is studied on samples produced by ball milling NaBH4 with 2 mol% of a metal fluoride additive. The effects obtained by increasing additive amount and changing oxidation state are also evaluated for NbF5, CeF3, and CeF4. The as-milled products are characterized by in-house power X-ray diffraction, while the hydrogen release and decomposition are monitored by temperature programmed desorption with residual gas analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetry. The screening of samples containing 2 mol% of additive shows that distinctive groups of transition metal fluorides affect the ball milling process differently depending on their enthalpy of formation, melting point, or their abi with the same transition metal and different oxidation states, the most efficient additive is found to be the one with a higher oxidation state. Furthermore, among all the samples studied, higher oxidation state metal fluorides are found to be the most destabilizing agents for NaBH4. Overall, the present study shows that there is no single parameter affecting the destabilization of NaBH4 by transition metal fluorides. Instead, parameters such as the transition metal electronegativity and oxidation state or the enthalpy of formation of the fluoride and its melting point are competing to influence the destabilization. In particular, it is found that the combination of a high metal oxidation state and a low fluoride melting point will enhance destabilization. This is observed for MnF3, NbF5, NiF2, and CuF2, which lead to high gas releases from the decomposition of NaBH4 at the lowest decomposition temperatures.Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a major risk factor of colorectal cancer. Drugs currently used for IBD exhibit adverse effects including vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Naturally derived novel alternative therapies are required to overcome these limitations. DEG-77 clinical trial In this study, we investigated the protective effects of ethanol extract of Cicer arietinum (CEE) in a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced mouse model of colitis. CEE markedly improved DSS-induced clinical symptoms and histological status, such as the disease activity index, spleen weight, and colon length. Moreover, CEE-treated mice showed significant recovery of DSS-induced crypt damage and cell death. CEE suppressed myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and macrophage marker F4/80 mRNA expression in colonic tissue of mice with DSS-induced colitis, indicating neutrophil infiltration and macrophage accumulation, respectively. Although DSS upregulated pro-inflammatory mediators and activated transcription factors, CEE downregulated the mRNA expression of cytokines including interleukin-6, interleukin-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-α, protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase, as well as activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-кB) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). Hence, our findings reveal that the anti-inflammatory properties of CEE, involving the downregulation of the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators by inactivating NF-кB and STAT3 in DSS-induced colitis mice.Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) is used as a crosslinker in poly(acrylonitrile (AN)-co-vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC)) to investigate the effect of long-chain crosslinker to the porosity of the terpolymer system. Poly(AN-co-EGDMA-co-VBC) is synthesized by using precipitation polymerization method and further hypercrosslinked by Friedel-Crafts reaction. FT-IR spectra of poly(AN-co-EGDMA-co-VBC) show that the absorption bands at ~1290 cm-1 that are assigned to the C-Cl vibrations are almost disappeared in hypercrosslinked (HXL) poly(AN-co-EGDMA-co-VBC) polymers, confirming that the hypercrosslinking reaction is successful. SEM images show that the morphologies of the polymers are retained through the hypercrosslinking reactions. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis shows that hypercrosslinked polymers had a specific surface area up to 59 m2·g-1. The preliminary performance of the terpolymer adsorbent to capture polar analyte is evaluated by adsorbing salicylic acid and mefenamic acid from aqueous solution in a batch system. The maximum adsorption capacity of salicylic acid and mefenamic acid were up to 416.7 mg·g-1 and 625 mg·g-1, respectively, and the adsorption kinetic data obeyed pseudo-second-order rate equation.A link between telomere shortening and oxidative stress was found in aging people and patients with cancer or inflammatory diseases. Extracts of Astragalus spp. are known to stimulate telomerase activity, thereby compensating telomere shortening. We characterized a multi-component hydroethanolic root extract (HRE) of Astragalus mongholicus Bunge and assessed its effects on telomeres compared to those of danazol. Astragalosides I to IV, flavonoids, amino acids and sugars were detected in the HRE. Samples of peripheral blood lymphocytes with short telomeres from 18 healthy donors (mean age 63.5 years; range 3286 years) were exposed to a single dose of 1 µg/mL HRE or danazol for three days. Telomere length and telomerase expression were then measured. Significant elongation of telomeres associated to a less toxicity was observed in lymphocytes from 13/18 donors following HRE treatment (0.54 kb (0.15-2.06 kb)) and in those from 9/18 donors after danazol treatment (0.95 kb (0.06-2.06 kb)). The rate of cells with short telomeres ( less then 3 kb) decreased in lymphocytes from all donors after exposure to either HRE or danazol, telomere elongation being telomerase-dependent. These findings suggest that the HRE could be used for the management of age-related diseases.
