Light is a key determinant for plant growth, development, and ultimately yield. Phytochromes, red/far-red photoreceptors, play an important role in plant architecture, stress tolerance, and productivity. In the model plant Arabidopsis, it has been shown that PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTORS (PIFs; bHLH transcription factors) act as central hubs in the integration of external stimuli to regulate plant development. Recent studies have unveiled the importance of PIFs in crops. They are involved in the modulation of plant architecture and productivity through the regulation of cell division and elongation in response to different environmental cues. These studies show that different PIFs have overlapping but also distinct functions in the regulation of plant growth. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms by which PIFs regulate plant development is crucial to improve crop productivity under both optimal and adverse environmental conditions. In this review, we discuss current knowledge of PIFs acting as integrators of light and other signals in different crops, with particular focus on the role of PIFs in responding to different environmental conditions and how this can be used to improve crop productivity.

This study investigated the advertising trends of plastic surgery clinics to assess for prevailing gender differences among online Canadian plastic surgery practice advertising.

The 2021 College of Physicians and Surgeons directory for each province and territory was utilized to identify all practicing plastic surgeons. A systematic search with Google (Mountain View, CA) was conducted to analyze the websites of Canadian plastic surgery centers in the following manner "[physician name] [province of practice]."

A total of 209 websites and 13,838 images were identified and analyzed. Of these images, 12,386 (90%) were female and 1452 (10%) were male patients or models. Although only 20% had a male services page, 62% of all centers offered gynecomastia procedures. The most common procedures targeting men were blepharoplasty (95%), liposuction (93%), and abdominoplasty (93%). The Prairies region had significantly fewer websites with male-only pages compared with all other Canadian regions.

Vaccine-induced immune responses are often attenuated in frail and older populations, but published data are scarce. We measured SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike antibody levels in Long-Term Care Facility residents and staff following second vaccination dose with Oxford-AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech. We obtained potential targets of gingerol derivatives (6-gingerol, 8-gingerol and 10-gingerol) from PubChem and SwissTargetPrediction websites and collected related targets for liver cancer with the help of GeneCards. We performed Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis on key targets using the DAVID data platform and combined with Cytoscape 3.7.1 software to construct a component-target-signal pathway interaction map to study its mechanism of action. Subsequently, the components and key proteins were molecularly docked through Autodock Vina software. Finally, the important signal pathways were verified by HepG2 cell in-vitro experiments.

Because CD44 signaling enhances regulatory T (Treg) cell-induction, administering CD44 ligands such as hyaluronan (HA) with allergen-specific SLIT may enhance the therapeutic effects. We evaluated the role of CD44 in Treg cell-induction in T helper type 2 (Th2)-mediated chronic airway inflammation using CD44-/- mice and the efficacy of HA on SLIT in a Dermatophagoides farinae (Df)-induced murine model of chronic asthma. Th2 responses and Treg cell induction were evaluated in CD44-/- mice. We devised a new SLIT model of Df-induced chronic asthma utilizing HA as an adjuvant. The effects of HA added to the new SLIT model were evaluated by the early asthmatic response (EAR) and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), eosinophilic airway inflammation, and serum Df-specific IgE levels. Previous studies examining the association between male circumcision (MC) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections have reported inconsistent results. We used data from the HPV Infection and Transmission Among Couples Through Heterosexual Activity (HITCH) cohort study to examine the association between MC and HPV infections in males and their female sexual partners.

We enrolled monogamous couples in a longitudinal study between 2005 and 2011 in Montreal, Canada. We used logistic and Poisson regression models with propensity score adjustment to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and rate ratios for the association between MC and the prevalence, transmission, and clearance of HPV infections.

Four hundred thirteen couples were included in our study. The prevalence OR for the association between MC and baseline infections was 0.81 (95% confidence interval [CI], .56-1.16) in males and 1.05 (95% CI, .75-1.46) in females. The incidence rate ratio for infection transmission was 0.59 (95% CI, .16-2.20) for male-to-female transmission and 0.77 (95% CI, .37-1.60) for female-to-male transmission. The clearance rate ratio for clearance of infections was 0.81 (95% CI, .52-1.24).

We found little evidence of an association between MC and HPV infection prevalence, transmission, or clearance in males and females. Further longitudinal couple-based studies are required to investigate this association.

A 62-item questionnaire was generated by use of an online platform and sent to house officers at participating institutions in October 2020. Responses were analyzed for trends and associations between selected variables.

239 residents, 45 rotating interns, and 19 specialty interns responded to the survey. The majority of house officers felt that their training program negatively interfered with their exercise habits, diet, and social engagement. House officers reported engaging in exercise significantly less during times of clinical responsibility, averaging 1.6 exercise sessions/wk (SD ± 0.8) on clinical duty and 2.4 exercise sessions/wk (SD ± 0.9) when not on clinical duty (P < 0.001). Ninety-four percent of respondents reported experiencing some degree of anxiety regarding their physical health, and 95% of house officers reported feeling some degree of anxiety regarding their current financial situation. Overall, 47% reported that their work-life balance was unsustainable for > 1 year; there was no association between specialty and sustainability of work-life balance. Most house officers were satisfied with their current training program, level of clinical responsibility, and mentorship.

Veterinary house officers demonstrated a poor balance between the demands of postgraduate training and maintenance of personal health. Thoughtful interventions are needed to support the well-being of veterinary house officers.
