The mechanical properties of plants are important for understanding plant biomechanics and for breeding new plants that can survive in challenging environments. Thus, accurate and reliable methods are required for the determination of mechanical properties such as stiffness and Young's modulus of elasticity. Much attention has been paid to the application of static methods to plants, while dynamic methods have received considerably less attention. In the present study, a dynamic forced vibration method for mechanical characterisation of Arabidopsis inflorescence stems was developed and validated against the conventional three-point bending test. Docetaxel mw Compared to dynamic tests based on free vibration, the current method allows to determine simultaneously more than one natural frequency, thus increasing the overall accuracy of the results. In addition, this method can be applied to the top parts of the stems that are more flexible, and where application of the three-point bending test is often limited. To demonstrate one of the potential applications of this method, it was applied to evaluate the influence of turgor pressure on the mechanical properties of Arabidopsis stems. Overall, the new dynamic testing approach has been shown to provide reliable data for the local mechanical properties along the Arabidopsis inflorescence stem. The adipose-derived stem cell has been used in various regenerative medicine research due to its multiple differentiation capabilities. Developing a stable and quick approach for the differentiation of stem cells is a critical issue in tissue regenerative field. In this investigation, rat adipose-derived stem cells (rADSCs) were seeded onto the type I collagen/transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) immobilized polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate and then combined with short term dynamic stretching stimulation (intermittent or continuous stretching for 6 h) to induce the rADSCs chondrogenesis differentiation using the induction medium without growth factors added in vitro. Via regulating the extracellular chemical- and mechano-receptors of the cultured rADSCs, the chondrogenic differentiation was examined. After 72 h of static culture, proteoglycan secretion was noted on the surfaces modified by collagen with or without TGF-β1. After different stretching stimulations, significant proteoglycan secretion was noted on the surface modified by both collagen and collagen/TGF-β1, especially after the intermittent stretching culturing. Nonetheless, genetic expression of the chondrogenic markers SOX-9, Col2a1, and aggrecan, instead, were dependent upon the surface grafted layer and the stretching mode utilized. These findings suggested that the surface chemical characteristics and external mechanical stimulation could synergistically affect the efficacy of chondrogenic differentiation of rADSCs.

The study aimed to investigate whether isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutation status in gliomas can be estimated by volume-based histogram analysis of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI).

Preoperative DCE-MRI data of 85 pathologically confirmed glioma patients including 33 carrying IDH1 mutant type (IDH1

) and 52 with IDH1 wildtype (IDH1

) were reviewed in a retrospective approach. Regions of interest (ROI) covering entire tumor volume were manually delineated using O.K. software (OmniKinetics, GE Healthcare, China). Histogram parameters of volume transfer constant (K

) and volume of extravascular /extracellular space per unit volume of tissue (V

) derived from DCE-MRI were obtained. Mann-Whitney U tests were made to compare the differences in histogram parameters of K

and V

between IDH1

and IDH1

in all gliomas and high-grade gliomas (HGGs, grade III and IV). Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analysis were implemented to assess the diagnostic performance.

In histogram parameters of K

and V

, pairwise comparisons demonstrated statistically significant differences in mean, standard deviation (SD), 90th and 95th percentiles (90%, 95%) values between IDH1

and IDH1

in all cases of gliomas and HGGs (P < 0.05, respectively). The ROC analysis revealed that the cut-off values of 95% value of K

(0.097 min

) and mean value of V

(0.099) provided the best combination of sensitivity and specificity to distinguish all gliomas with IDH1

from IDH1

. In HGGs, the cut-off values of mean value of K

and V

(0.044 min

, 0.099) played similar role.

Volume-based histogram analysis of DCE-MRI performs well in identification of IDH1

gliomas.

Volume-based histogram analysis of DCE-MRI performs well in identification of IDH1mut gliomas.Higher courts sometimes assess the constitutionality of law by working through a concrete case, other times by reasoning about the underlying question in a more abstract way. Prior research has found that the degree of concreteness or abstraction with which an issue is formulated can influence people's prescriptive views For instance, people often endorse punishment for concrete misdeeds that they would oppose if the circumstances were described abstractly. We sought to understand whether the so-called 'abstract/concrete paradox' also jeopardizes the consistency of judicial reasoning. In a series of experiments, both lay and professional judges sometimes reached opposite conclusions when reasoning about concrete cases versus the underlying issues formulated in abstract terms. This effect emerged whether participants reasoned with broad principles, such as human dignity, or narrow rules, and was largest among individuals high in trait empathy. Finally, to understand whether people reflectively endorse the discrepancy between abstract and concrete resolutions, we examined their reactions when evaluating both, either simultaneously or sequentially. These approaches revealed no single pattern across lay and expert populations, or exploratory and confirmatory studies. Taken together, our studies suggest that empathic concern plays a greater role in guiding the judicial resolution of concrete cases than in illuminating judges' professed standards-which may result in concrete decisions in violation of their own abstract principles.
