In conclusion, the clinical course of COVID-19 in children is usually mild or asymptomatic. In children suspected of having COVID-19, other infections should not be overlooked. The main risk factor for COVID-19 in children is household contact with an infected relative. In this work, we demonstrate two types of heterogeneous irradiated-pristine polyethylene nanofiber junctions, 'heavily-irradiated-pristine' (HI-P) and 'lightly-irradiated-pristine' (LI-P) junctions, as high-performance solid-state thermal diodes. The HI-P junction rectifies heat flux in a single direction, while the LI-P junction shows dual-directional rectification under different working temperatures. We accurately model the phase transition of polyethylene nanofibers with a finite temperature range rather than a step function. The finite-temperature-range model suggests that the rectification factor increases with temperature bias and there is a minimum threshold of temperature bias for notable rectification. Besides, the finite-temperature-range model shows better prediction for the heat flow data from experiments, while the step function model tends to overestimate the rectification performance around the optimal length fraction of irradiation. Although both the models show that an optimal rectification occurs when the interface temperatures in the forward and the reverse biases are equal, the optimized rectification factor is determined by the temperature bias and the temperature range of phase transition. This work elucidates the influence of both the temperature bias and the temperature range of phase transition on thermal rectification performance, which could incredibly benefit the evaluation and design of thermal diodes.Recently, the end-Devonian mass extinction (Hangenberg Crisis, 359 Ma) was identified as a first-order mass extinction, albeit not one of the "Big Five" events. Many marine and terrestrial organisms were affected by this crisis. The cause of this mass extinction is still conjectural and widely discussed. Here we report anomalously high mercury (Hg) concentrations from the South Tian Shan (Uzbekistan), together with correlation using conodont biostratigraphic data. Hg enrichment (to 5825 ppb) was detected in marine deposits encompassing the Hangenberg Crisis. In the Novchomok section, the Hangenberg Crisis interval does not contain typical Hangenberg Black Shales; however, by means of inorganic geochemistry (enrichment of redox-sensitive elements such as Mo, V, and U) we detected an equivalent level despite the lack of marked facies changes. This is the first record of Hg and Hg/total organic carbon anomalies in marly shales, marls and carbonates that are totally independent of facies changes, implying that volcanism was the most probable cause of the Hangenberg Crisis. This conclusion is confirmed by the presence of a negative δ13C excursion, which may reflect massive release of isotopically light carbon from volcanogenic and thermogenic devolatilization likely combined with increased arc-volcanism activity worldwide at the end of the Devonian.Congenital cataracts are associated with gene mutations, yet the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. Here we reported an embryonic chick lens model that closely recapitulates the process of cataract formation. We adopted dominant-negative site mutations that cause congenital cataracts, connexin, Cx50E48K, aquaporin 0, AQP0R33C, αA-crystallin, CRYAA R12C and R54C. The recombinant retroviruses containing these mutants were microinjected into the occlusive lumen of chick lenses at early embryonic development. Cx50E48K expression developed cataracts associated with disorganized nuclei and enlarged extracellular spaces. Expression of AQP0R33C resulted in cortical cataracts, enlarged extracellular spaces and distorted fiber cell organization. αA crystallin mutations distorted lens light transmission and increased crystalline protein aggregation. Together, retroviral expression of congenital mutant genes in embryonic chick lenses closely mimics characteristics of human congenital cataracts. This model will provide an effective, reliable in vivo system to investigate the development and underlying mechanism of cataracts and other genetic diseases.Climate change affects physical and biogeochemical processes in lakes. We show significant increases in surface-water temperature (~ 0.5 °C decade-1; > 0.2% year-1) and wave power (> 1% year-1; the transport of energy by waves) associated with atmospheric phenomena (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Multivariate El Niño/Southern Oscillation) in the month of August between 1980 and 2018 in the Laurentian Great Lakes. A pattern in wave power, in response to extreme winds, was identified as a proxy to predict interbasin coupling in Lake Erie. This involved the upwelling of cold and hypoxic (dissolved oxygen  less then  2 mg L-1) hypolimnetic water containing high total phosphorus concentration from the seasonally stratified central basin into the normally well-mixed western basin opposite to the eastward flow. Analysis of historical records indicate that hypoxic events due to interbasin exchange have increased in the western basin over the last four decades (43% in the last 10 years) thus affecting the water quality of the one of the world's largest freshwater sources and fisheries. We aimed to compare clinical characteristics of patients with and without tophi at the time of the diagnosis of gout and investigate the association of tophi and renal function in gout patients. The patients who were first diagnosed with gout at the Kangwon National University Hospital were retrospectively studied. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of tophi at the diagnosis. We compared clinical characteristics and the progression of renal dysfunction between the two groups. Of 276 patients, 66 (25.5%) initially presented with tophi. Tophi group was older, had a longer symptom duration, and a higher prevalence of multiple joint involvement than those without tophi. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, prolonged symptom duration and multiple joint involvement were significantly associated with increased risk of formation of tophi. The decline in the eGFR was more prominent in patients with tophi than in those without (- 4.8 ± 14.5 vs. - 0.7 ± 11.9 ml/min/1.73 m2/year, respectively; P = 0.039). The presence of tophi was significantly associated with a rapid decline in the eGFR (β = - 0.136; P = 0.042). In conclusion, the presence of tophi was associated with a rapid declining renal function. Therefore, an early diagnosis and closely monitoring of renal function might be important in gout patients with tophi.Autophagy is an essential cellular process for the degradation and recycling of cellular components, and its dysregulation has been linked to neuronal cell death and neurodegeneration. In glaucoma, the role of autophagy in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival remains contradictory. Moreover, the effects of autophagy modulation at different time-points on RGC survival in a glaucoma model have not been investigated. In this study, we assessed the time-dependent role of autophagy in RGC survival in a circumlimbal suture-induced ocular hypertensive (OHT) rat model. Intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation led to a gradual autophagy induction, which reached a maximum between 1 and 4 weeks after OHT induction. On the other hand, early autophagy was impaired between 1 and 3 days after circumlimbal suturing, indicated by increased p62 levels due to reduced autophagosomal turnover. The intravitreal administration of rapamycin at different time-points after the application of the circumlimbal suture indicated that autophagy induction early during OHT development had potent survival-promoting effects in RGCs. Rapamycin cell line In conclusion, our findings suggest that the role of autophagy in RGCs during OHT development might differ in a time-dependent manner. Modulating autophagy at the appropriate time might serve as a potential therapeutic approach to enhance RGC survival in OHT.Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are at present widely used as energy storage and conversion device in our daily life. However, due to the limited power density, the application of LIBs is still restricted in some areas such as commercial vehicles or heavy-duty trucks. An effective strategy to solve this problem is to increase energy density through the development of battery materials. At the same time, a stable long cycling battery is a great demand of environmental protection and industry. Herein we present our new materials, nitrogen and boron doped carbon layer coated multiwall carbon nanotubes (NBC@MWCNTs), which can be used as anodes for LIBs. The electrochemical results demonstrate that the designed NBC@MWCNTs electrode possesses high stable capacity over an ultra-long cycling lifespan (5000 cycles) and superior rate capability even at very high current density (67.5 A g-1). Such impressive lithium storage properties could be ascribed to the synergistic coupling effect of the distinctive structural features, the reduced diffusion length of lithium ions, more active sites generated by doped atoms for lithium storage, as well as the enhancement of the electrode structural integrity. Taken together, these results indicate that the N, B-doped carbon@MWCNTs materials may have great potential for applications in next-generation high performance rechargeable batteries. It is well established that Antarctic biodiversity has been strongly influenced by rapid climatic fluctuations during the Quaternary. Marine invertebrates from Antarctica constitute an interesting lens through which to study the impacts of the last glacial periods as glaciation impacted the distribution and intraspecific genetic variation of these animals. However, the impact on the spatial genetic distribution and historical demography of local processes in areas adjacent to the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is less clear. Here we present new genetic information on the bivalve Kidderia subquadrata, a small mollusk that inhabits intertidal rocky island ecosystems throughout the WAP. Using a phylogeographical approach, we examined the spatial patterns of genetic diversity in this brooder species to test the hypothesis of strong genetic structure in incubating organisms and the hypothesis of glacial refugia in organisms with limited dispersion. We found evidence of strong genetic structure among populations of the WAP and a recent expansion in the South Shetland Islands. Our findings are concordant with the predictions that incubating organisms, abundant in Antarctica, present a strong genetic structure among their populations and also support the hypothesis of glacial refugia in organisms with limited dispersion. The effect of the coastal current pattern in the WAP is suggested as a driver to the local spatial dynamics of the genetic diversity distribution. Although genetic information about this microbivalve is still scarce, the knowledge reported here has increased our understanding of the evolutionary patterns of this organism that is endemic to the Southern Ocean. The aim of this study was to reveal the effects of anaesthesia strategies on maternal mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate, vasopressor consumption, adverse events, and neonatal resuscitation when women with preeclampsia (PE) undergo caesarean section (CS). Three major databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective controlled studies (PCSs). Two authors independently screened, extracted, and checked eligibility and outcome data. Outcomes involved MAP, vasopressor use, maternal adverse events, APGAR scores, and neonatal resuscitation. Pooled estimates were carried out by contrast-based network meta-analysis, and pooled effect sizes were presented with 95% confidence interval (CI). Eleven RCTs and one PCS (n = 782) formed three-node network meta-analysis, and non-significant differences were observed in MAP, 5-min APGAR score, and neonatal intubation rate among the three anaesthesia strategies. General anaesthesia had significantly lower vasopressor consumption than spinal anaesthesia did (standardised mean difference =  - 1.
