It is essential for keeping up the dialogue between interaction partners, evaluating the adequacy of an action, or improving task performance. While the neuroscientific view on feedback has largely focused on its function as reward, more general definitions also emphasise its function as information about aspects of one's task performance. Using fMRI in a computer-controlled auditory categorisation task, we studied the neural correlates of the informational value of computer-given feedback independent of reward. Feedback about the correctness of a decision, compared with feedback only indicating the registration of a decision, increases activation of the dorsal posterior cingulate cortex, supporting this region's role in adapting to behaviourally relevant information. Both conditions elicit equally strong activation of the dorsal striatum which does not support an interpretation of feedback information as a type of reward. Instead, we suggest that it reflects a more fundamental aspect of human interaction behaviour, namely the establishment of a state that enables us to continue with the next step of the interaction.The Kara and Laptev seas receive about one half of total freshwater runoff to the Arctic Ocean from the Ob, Yenisei, and Lena rivers. Discharges of these large rivers form freshened surface water masses over wide areas in these seas. These water masses, i.e., the Ob-Yenisei and Lena river plumes, generate an eastward buoyancy boundary current that accounts for the large-scale zonal freshwater transport along the Siberian part in the Arctic Ocean. In this study we investigate spreading of the Ob-Yenisei plume from the Kara Sea to the Laptev Sea through the Vilkitsky Strait and of the Lena plume from the Laptev Sea to the East-Siberian Sea through the Laptev and Sannikov straits during ice-free season. Large horizontal density gradient between freshened plume water and salty ambient sea water is the main driver of these processes, however, their intensity strongly depends on local wind forcing. The Ob-Yenisei plume is spreading to the Laptev Sea in a narrow alongshore current which is induced by strong and long-term southwesterly winds. Under other wind forcing the plume does not reach the Vilkitsky Strait. The Lena plume is almost constantly spreading to the East-Siberian Sea as a large-scale surface water mass which intensity is governed by eastward Ekman transport and is prone to large synoptic variability.The ongoing spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has driven novel interventions, such as antiretrovirals, for pre-exposure prophylaxis. Interventions have overlooked a high-risk Sub-Saharan African population adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), particularly those under 18. We apply the Balkus risk tool among rural South African AGYW (n = 971) in a hyper-endemic setting, identify limitations, and assess deficiencies with modern statistical techniques. We apply the "Ayton" tool, the first risk tool applicable to sub-Saharan African AGYW, and compare performance of Balkus and Ayton tools under varying conditions. The Ayton tool more effectively predicted HIV acquisition. In low and high-risk AGYW, the Ayton tool out-performed the Balkus tool, which did not distinguish between risk classes. The Ayton tool better captured HIV acquisition risk and risk heterogeneities due to its AGYW-focused design. Findings support use of the Ayton tool for AGYW and underscore the need for diverse prognostic tools considering epidemic severity, age, sex and transmission.Clinical Trial Number ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01187979) and the South African National Clinical Trials Registry (SANCTR) (DOH-27-0812-3345).Groundwater treatment sludge is a type of solid waste with 9.0-28.9% wt.% Fe content and is precipitated in large quantity from backwash wastewater in groundwater treatment. The sludge is mainly composed of fine particles containing Fe, Si and Al oxides, such as ferrihydrite, quartz and boehmite. The Fe oxides mostly originate from the oxidation of ferrous Fe in groundwater, whilst the silicate/aluminium compounds mainly originate from the broken quartz sand filter in the backwash step. In general, the sludge is firstly coagulated, dewatered by filter pressing and finally undergoes harmless solidification before it is sent to landfills. However, this process is costly (approximately US$66.1/t) and complicated. In this study, groundwater treatment sludge was effectively recycled to prepare novel erdite-bearing particles via a one-step hydrothermal method by adding only Na2S·9H2O. After hydrothermal treatment, the quartz and boehmite of the sludge were dissolved and recrystallised to sodalite, whilst ferrihydrite was converted to an erdite nanorod at 160 °C and a hematite at 240 °C. SP160 was prepared as fine nanorod particles with 200 nm diameter and 2-5 μm length at a hydrothermal temperature of 160 °C. Nearly 100% OTC and its derivatives in pharmaceutical manufacture wastewater were removed by adding 0.1 g SP160. The major mechanism for the removal was the spontaneous hydrolysis of erdite in SP160 to generate Fe oxyhydroxide and use many hydroxyl groups for coordinating OTC and its derivatives. In order for the intraspecific approach with wild animals to be useful for testing evolutionary hypotheses about cognition, researchers must provide evidence that measures of cognitive ability obtained from wild subjects reflect stable, general traits. Here, we used a multi-access box paradigm to investigate the intra-individual reliability of innovative problem-solving ability across time and contexts in wild spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta). We also asked whether estimates of reliability were affected by factors such as age-sex class, the length of the interval between tests, or the number of times subjects were tested. We found significant contextual and temporal reliability for problem-solving. However, problem-solving was not reliable for adult subjects, when trials were separated by more than 17 days, or when fewer than seven trials were conducted per subject. The substitution method we propose here consists of an Al deposition process on a GaN substrate by a sputtering technique and heat treatment process. The substitution reaction (Al + GaN = AlN + Ga) is proceeded by heat treatment of the Al/GaN sample, which provides a low temperature, simple and easy process. This study measured nerve agent-related neuropathology and determined whether quantitative T2 MRI could be used as a biomarker of neurodegeneration. Quantitative T2 MRI was performed using a 9.4 T MRI on rats prior to and following soman exposure. T2 images were taken at least 24 h prior, 1 h and 18-24 h after soman exposure. Rats were pre- and post-treated with HI-6 dimethanesulfonate and atropine methyl nitrate. A multicomponent T2 acquisition and analysis was performed. Brains were stained with Fluoro-Jade C to assess neurodegeneration. Rats exposed to soman developed behavioral expression of electrographic seizures. At 18-24 h after soman exposure, significant increases in T2, a possible marker of edema, were found in multiple regions. The largest changes were in the piriform cortex (before 47.7 ± 1.4 ms; 18-24 h 82.3 ± 13.4 ms). Fluoro-Jade C staining showed significant neurodegeneration 18-24 h post exposure. The piriform cortex had the strongest correlation between the change in relaxation rate and percent neurodegeneration (r = 0.96, p  less then  0.001). These findings indicate there is regionally specific neurodegeneration 24 h after exposure to soman. The high correlation between T2 relaxivity and histopathology supports the use of T2 as a marker of injury.The crossover from a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) rough surface to a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) rough surface on a vicinal surface is studied using the Monte Carlo method in the non-equilibrium steady state in order to address discrepancies between theoretical results and experiments. The model used is a restricted solid-on-solid model with a discrete Hamiltonian without surface or volume diffusion (interface limited growth/recession). The temperature, driving force for growth, system size, and surface slope dependences of the surface width are calculated for vicinal surfaces tilted between the (001) and (111) surfaces. The surface velocity, kinetic coefficient of the surface, and mean height of the locally merged steps are also calculated. In contrast to the accepted theory for (2 + 1) surfaces, we found that the crossover point from a BKT (logarithmic) rough surface to a KPZ (algebraic) rough surface is different from the kinetic roughening point for the (001) surface. The driving force for crystal growth was found to be a relevant parameter for determining whether the system is in the BKT class or the KPZ class. Some diatom species such as Asterionella formosa have a broad variation in seasonal abundance leading to the possibility that diatoms could constrain the time of year when an object was immersed in water. Here we apply this technique to the cold case of DB Cooper's money. Nine years after the crime, six thousand dollars in three bundles were found on the shore of the Columbia River near Portland, Oregon. This burial site was ~30 km from his reported jump location which gave no apparent reason for the money to end up there. This study found diatoms on a recovered bill which indicates that the money was immersed before burial. The species mix found on the bills was compared to a test bill submerged in the Columbia River in November which was the timeframe for the crime. The Cooper bill contained diatoms from summer bloom species suggesting that the money was not directly buried dry and the immersion happened months after the late November hijacking. This finding rules out of a majority of current theories related to the crime and proposes diatoms as a feasible methodology to constrain seasonal timelines in forensics.
