COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the mental health condition of the world's population. Although the direct effect of COVID-19 on the mental health status of chronic medical patients is well understood, the burden of depression and anxiety on patients with chronic medical conditions is not well studied yet. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the prevalence of depression, anxiety and associated factors among chronic medical patients amid the COVID-19 pandemic in Mettu Karl Referral Hospital, Mettu, Ethiopia.
A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from June 1 to July 30, 2020 among chronic medical patients in Mettu Karl Referral Hospital, Ethiopia. Consecutive sampling technique was applied with a total of 423 samples. Quantitative data were employed by using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistical procedures, bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions with odds ratios and 95% confidence interval (CI) were employed. The statistical significance was declared at p valueentification and treatment of depression and anxiety should be developed among medically ill patients.Schizophrenia is a serious disease of the central nervous system that affects a person's ability to think, feel and behave clearly. Even though the pathophysiological hypothesis of the disease is not clearly understood, dysfunction of dopamine, glutamate, serotonin and other neurotransmitters is widely believed to be involved. Serotonin within the synaptic vesicles functions as neurotransmitter and neurohormone in regulation of emotion, learning, memory, hormone release, cognition and motor function. Dysfunction of normal brain activity of serotonin is associated with schizophrenia. The role of serotonin 6 and 7 receptors in schizophrenia, interaction with neurotransmitters and the effect of drugs on those receptors in schizophrenia are the goal of this review. The aim of this review was to provide information for researchers and other scholars to identify the possible intervention points in the management of schizophrenia. The serotonin 6 and 7 receptors are associated with schizophrenia via modulating cyclic adenosine monophosphate, regulation of Fyn kinase and induction of structural plasticity. The above modulatory effects affect cholinergic, dopaminergic, glutamatergic, adrenergic and GABAergic systems. Recently, diverse numbers of selective agonist and antagonist ligands were developed for both receptors. SGS-518, ABT-354, Lu AE58054, SB-742,457, S-518, AVN-211, AVN-322, SYN-114 and SYN-120 are serotonin 6 receptor antagonists and aripiprazole-controlled release serotonin 7 receptor agonists under clinical trial for schizophrenia. Thus, research on novel drugs that act on serotonin 6 and 7 receptors likely facilitates the intervention into schizophrenia patients seeking better quality of life in the future.
Although there are highly precise and advanced diagnostic methods, the etiology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia remain poorly understood. There are several theories about schizophrenia origin, among which the neurodevelopmental theory is widely accepted. Institutional-based comparative cross-sectional study design was conducted in Debre Markos comprehensive, specialized hospitals in 190 schizophrenic patients, 190 healthy controls, and 190 1st-degree relatives. Data were collected using standard methods, entered into EpiData version 3.1, and exported to SPSS version 24 for analysis. Descriptive data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and discriminant function analysis was conducted and a value of 0.03 was taken as the cutoff point for prediction of group status of the study samples.
Five hundred seventy study samples, male 375 (65.8%), and female 195 (34.2%), were included in this study. The discriminate function 1 and 2 revealed a significant association between groups and all predictors, accounting for 83.5% and 16.5% of between-group variability, respectively. However, closer analysis of the structure matrix revealed longitudinally furrowed tongue, ≥Five palate ridges, high steeples palate, transversely and randomly furrowed tongue, protruding supraorbital ridge as significant predictors.

Many studies attempt to explain the mechanisms of these dysfunctions formation, including correlations between cognitive functions and biochemical parameters. Scientists search for substances that would be indicators of cognitive functions and which could be determined in the cerebrospinal fluid or blood of the subjects. To date, they have isolated a few of such substances; however, research on their specificity, validity and the possibility of their use in diagnostics and prognostic assessment is still ongoing. However, there have been only few reports in the literature systematizing the existing knowledge on this subject, and they are mostly related to Alzheimer's disease, not cognition in general, or referring only to a specific group of substances. This article discusses the most important biochemical exponents of cognitive functions.
Our objectives are to assess the public attitude toward mentally ill people and mental health services and to compare the attitudes of those who have past history of mental illness, those who have been exposed to mentally ill people, and those who have not.
We conducted a cross-sectional study among subjects (
=1268) in four Saudi Arabian cities (Riyadh, Abha, Dammam, and Jizan), recruiting participants from malls and parks. All participants were administered "the knowledge and attitudes toward mental illness and mental health services scale".
Participants were divided into three groups; non-exposed to mental illness group (
=687, 54.1%), exposed to mental illness group (
=305, 24%), and having past history of mental illness group (
=276, 21.8%). Results revealed that non-exposed group had the lowest knowledge about mental illness (
<0.001). Exposed group had the best attitude toward mentally ill people (
=0.002), mental health services (
< 0.001), the lowest impact of traditional beliefs ates significant differences in attitudes toward mental illness among different groups of participants. Lesser impact of traditional beliefs and better knowledge about mental illness were the factors most associated with better attitudes toward mentally ill people and mental health services and with better help-seeking behavior.
Decellularized matrix from porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) endows scaffolds with an ECM-like surface, which enhances stem cell self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation. Mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) is extensively recognized as an excellent bio-ceramic for fabricating bone grafts.
In the current study, SIS was doped on an MBG scaffold (MBG/SIS) using polyurethane foam templating and polydopamine chemistry method. To mimic the bony environment of a natural bone matrix, an ECM-inspired delivery system was constructed by coupling the BMP2-related peptide P28 to a heparinized MBG/SIS scaffold (MBG/SIS-H-P28). The release of P28 from MBG/SIS-H-P28 and its effects on the proliferation, viability, and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal stem cells were investigated in vitro and in vivo.
Our research indicated that the novel tissue-derived ECM scaffold MBG/SIS has a hierarchical and interconnected porous architecture, and superior biomechanical properties. MBG/SIS-H-P28 released P28 in a controlled manner, with the long-term release time of 40 d. The results of in vitro experiments showed improvements in cell proliferation, cell viability, alkaline phosphatase activity, and mRNA expression levels of osteogenesis-related genes (
, and
) compared to those of MBG/SIS or MBG/SIS-P28 and MBG/SIS-H-P28. The in vivo results demonstrated that MBG/SIS-H-P28 scaffolds evidently increased bone formation in rat calvarial critical-sized defect compared to that in controls.

Near-infrared (NIR) hyperthermia agents are promising in cancer photothermal therapy due to their deeper penetration ability and less side effects. Spherical gold nanoshell and graphene-based nanomaterials are two major NIR hyperthermia agents that have been reported for photothermal therapy of cancer. Herein, we constructed a two-dimensional graphene oxide-template gold nanosheet (GO@SiO
@AuNS) hybrid that could destruct cancer cells with efficient photothermal effect.
Graphene oxide was coated with a layer of mesoporous silica, which provided binding sites for gold seeds. Then, seed-growth method was utilized to grow a layer of gold nanosheet to form the GO@SiO
@AuNS hybrid, which possessed great biocompatibility and high photothermal conversion efficiency.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a fatal gynecologic malignancy that is usually treated with chemotherapy after surgery. However, patients who receive chemotherapy experience severe side effects because of the inherent toxicity and high dose of chemotherapeutics. To overcome these issues, we suggest a combination therapeutic strategy using liposomes encapsulating linalool nanoemulsions (LN-NEs) and doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapeutic drug, to increase their synergistic antitumor efficacy and reduce the incidence of side effects from chemotherapeutics for EOC.
The physical properties of LN-NE-DOX-liposomes were characterized by light scattering with a particle size analyzer. Cell viability was determined by MTT assay. Therapeutic efficacy was evaluated in a mouse HeyA8 EOC tumor model of ovarian carcinoma. Additionally, biochemical toxicity was analyzed for levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) using BALB/c nude mice.
