Biodiesel side stream waste glycerol was identified as a cheap carbon source for rhamnolipids (RLs) production which at the same time could improve the management of waste. The present study aimed to produce RLs by using Pseudomonas aeruginosa RS6 utilizing waste glycerol as a substrate and to evaluate their physico-chemicals properties. Fermentation conditions such as temperature, initial medium pH, waste glycerol concentration, nitrogen sources and concentrations resulted in different compositions of the mono- and di-RLs produced. The maximum RLs production of 2.73 g/L was obtained when P. aeruginosa RS6 was grown in a basal salt medium supplemented with 1% waste glycerol and 0.2 M sodium nitrate at 35 °C and pH 6.5. At optimal fermentation conditions, the emulsification index (E24) values of cooking oil, diesel oil, benzene, olive oil, petroleum, and kerosene were all above E24=50%. The surface tension reduction obtained from 72.13 mN/m to 29.4-30.4 mN/m was better than the surface activity of some chemical-based surfactants. The RLs produced possessed antimicrobial activities against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria with values ranging from 37% to 77% of growth inhibition when 1 mg/mL of RLs was used. Concentrations of RLs below 1500 μg/mL did not induce phytotoxicity effects on the tested seeds (Vigna radiata) compared to the chemical-based- surfactant, SDS. Furthermore, RLs tested on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos only exhibited low acute toxicity with an LC50 value of 72.97 μg/mL at 48 h of exposure suggesting a green and eco-biochemical worthy of future applications to replace chemical-based surfactants. The impacts of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition amount on plant communities have been extensively explored. However, the responses of plant communities to the ratio of reduced (NH4+-N) and oxidized (NO3--N) forms remain unclear in natural ecosystems. A field N enrichment experiment using different NH4+-N/NO3--N ratios was conducted in a natural semi-arid grassland in northern China from 2014 to 2019. Nitrogen addition tended to reduce plant species richness and significantly enhanced plant community aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP). Neither plant species richness nor plant ANPP at species and community levels was significantly affected by NH4+-N/NO3--N ratios. At the plant functional group level, ANPP of grasses was not significantly affected by the NH4+-N/NO3--N ratios examined, whereas ANPP of forbs was significantly increased at 11 NH4+-N/NO3--N. Regardless of N supplied using the different ratios of NH4+-N/NO3--N examined, plant community ANPP was positively associated with growing season precipitation. Unexpectedly, 11 NH4+-N/NO3--N (NH4NO3) significantly improved the positive response of plant community ANPP to precipitation (it had the biggest slope value). Our results suggest that precipitation was the main determinant of the influence of NH4+-N/NO3--N ratios on plant community ANPP. Therefore, the results of our study showed that without referring to NH4+-N/NO3--N ratios and precipitation, models using NH4NO3 enrichment may overestimate the positive effect of atmospheric N deposition on ecosystem ANPP in semi-arid ecozones.Seabirds are apex predators in the marine environment and well-known ecosystem engineers, capable of changing their terrestrial habitats by introducing marine-derived nutrients via deposition of guano and other allochthonous inputs. However, with the health of the world's oceans under threat due to anthropogenic pressures such as organic, inorganic, and physical pollutants, seabirds are depositing these same pollutants wherever they come to land. Using data from 2018 to 2020, we quantify how the Flesh-footed Shearwater (Ardenna carneipes) has inadvertently introduced physical pollutants to their colonies on Lord Howe Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Tasman Sea and their largest breeding colony, through a mix of regurgitated pellet (bolus) deposition and carcasses containing plastic debris. The density of plastics within the shearwater colonies ranged between 1.32 and 3.66 pieces/m2 (mean ± SE 2.18 ± 0.32), and a total of 688,480 (95% CI 582,409-800,877) pieces are deposited on the island each year. Our research demonstrates that seabirds are a transfer mechanism for marine-derived plastics, reintroducing items back into the terrestrial environment, thus making seabird colonies a sink for plastic debris. This phenomenon is likely occurring in seabird colonies across the globe and will increase in severity as global plastic production and marine plastic pollution accelerates without adequate mitigation strategies.Dissipation kinetics of atrazine and trifluralin in a clay loam soil was investigated in a laboratory incubation experiment under different temperature and moisture conditions. The soil was spiked with diluted atrazine and trifluralin concentrations at 4.50 and 4.25 mg/kg soil, respectively, the moisture content adjusted to 40, 70, and 100% of field capacity (FC) and then incubated in three climatic chambers at 10, 20, and 30 °C. For each of the herbicides, soil samples were collected at 0, 7, 21, 42, 70, and 105 days and analysed by Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD). A stochastic gamma model was used to model the dissipation of herbicides from the clay loam soil by incorporating environmental factors as covariates to determine half-life and days to complete dissipation. Results showed that temperature played a greater role on atrazine persistence than soil moisture; while the interaction effect of temperature and moisture was significant on the persistence of trifluralin over time. Atrazine dissipated more rapidly at 30 °C compared to 10 and 20 °C, with a half-life of 7.50 days and 326.23 days to reach complete dissipation. Rapid loss of trifluralin was observed at 70% moisture content when incubated at 30 °C, with a half-life of 5.80 days and 182.01 days to complete dissipation. It was observed that the half-life of both herbicides tended to double with every 10 °C decreases of temperature over the range tested. Revumenib datasheet The model indicated that both atrazine and trifluralin have the potential to persist in clay loam soil for several years at temperature ≤20 °C; which could potentially affect following crops in rotation.
