Monometallic catalysts, in particular those containing noble metals, are frequently used in heterogeneous catalysis, but they are expensive, rare and the ability to tailor their structures and properties remains limited. Traditionally, alloy catalysts have been used instead that feature enhanced electronic and chemical properties at a reduced cost. Furthermore, the introduction of single metal atoms anchored onto supports provided another effective strategy to increase both the atomic efficiency and the chance of tailoring the properties. Most recently, single-atom alloy catalysts have been developed in which one metal is atomically dispersed throughout the catalyst via alloy bonding; such catalysts combine the traditional advantages of alloy catalysts with the new feature of tailoring properties achievable with single atom catalysts. This review will first outline the atomic scale structural analysis on single-atom alloys using microscopy and spectroscopy tools, such as high-angle annular dark field imaging-scanning transmission electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Daidzein research buy Next, progress in research to understand the electronic properties of single-atom alloys using X-ray spectroscopy techniques and quantum calculations will be presented. The catalytic activities of single-atom alloys in a few representative reactions will be further discussed to demonstrate their structure-property relationships. The precise reversible control may be exploited in future stimuli-responsive chemosensing or optoelectronic devices.In this article, we report a scheme to analyze and visualize the energy density fluctuations during the real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) simulations. Using Ag4-N2 complexes as examples, it is shown that the grid-based Kohn-Sham energy density can be computed at each time step using a procedure from Nakai and coworkers. Then the instantaneous energy of each molecular fragment (such as Ag4 and N2) can be obtained by partitioning the Kohn-Sham energy densities using Becke or fragment-based Hirshfeld (FBH) scheme. A strong orientation-dependence is observed for the energy flow between the Ag4 cluster and a nearby N2 molecule in the RT-TDDFT simulations. Future applications of such an energy density analysis in electron dynamics simulations are discussed.We report a novel s-tetrazine based covalent organic framework (TZA-COF) and its hybrid nanocomposites with reduced graphene oxide (TZA-COF-rGO) and Co metal to illustrate novel structure-activity relationships in this class of compounds for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The Co-impregnated hybrid composites (TZA-COF-rGO-Co) were further annealed to yield Co-encapsulated nitrogen doped graphitic carbon (Co@NC-600), which exhibited excellent ORR activity comparable to that of the state-of-the art Pt/C in terms of onset potential, E1/2 (half-wave potential), 4e- reduction selectivity and methanol tolerance. Sequential mechanistic analyses of activity enhancement and electron transfer pathways for the ORR, at different stages of controlled catalyst engineering, elucidated the crucial role of active sites and overall catalyst nature in tuning the ORR mechanism. Co@NC-600 also exhibited high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity under alkaline conditions which makes it one of the most efficient non-precious metal bifunctional catalysts, capable of catalyzing complex 4e- reduction processes like the ORR and OER.The formation of trimetallic terbium-europium-gadolinium complexes was proposed as an approach to increase the sensitivity of the corresponding terbium-europium complexes for temperature measurement due to the suppression of multiphotonic emission. This approach results in over a 2-fold increase of the sensitivity of Eu-Tb carboxylate, which reached 5.3% K-1 in the physiological range.Melatonin continues to generate interest in the scientific community and the general public. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the possibility that melatonin present in human foods may have physiological effects. This has led to the promotion of "melatonin-rich" foods and "phyto-melatonin". The night time secretion of endogenous melatonin from the pineal gland provides a daily circadian signal which is detected by receptors in various tissues. In animals the changing circadian pattern of melatonin secretion across seasons is important to them to program their reproductive behaviours to ensure optimal reproductive success, while in humans it probably plays a prominent role in anchoring sleep to the night period. When melatonin is administered in non-physiological, milligram amounts to humans, the onset of sleep can be manipulated and in larger doses anti-oxidant properties may emerge. Melatonin-rich foods are considered in this context too, but the question remains whether the amounts of melatonin in the food can be expected to be high enough to realistically change sleep or have antioxidant properties. In this review, papers reporting the effects of ingestion of melatonin-rich food on plasma or saliva melatonin or its urinary metabolite are critically evaluated. Unfortunately many of the papers are compromised by poor experimental design and assay methodologies and uncritical evaluation of results. The conclusion drawn from this review is that it is wishful thinking to expect that the amount of melatonin in "melatonin-rich" foods will impact on sleep or have any other physiological impact.
