e to a patient-identified and defined problem that arose in therapeutic and conversational discourse. The research was informed by the responses of patient participants, as we used the material from interviews to dynamically shape the interview guide. Thus, participants' ideas drove the analysis and shaped the interviews to come.Establishing the relationship between protein-coding genes and phenotypes has the potential to inform on the molecular etiology of diseases. Here, we describe ExPheWas (exphewas.ca), a gene-based phenome-wide association study browser and platform that enables the conduct of gene-based Mendelian randomization. The ExPheWas data repository includes sex-stratified and sex-combined gene-based association results from 26 616 genes with 1746 phenotypes measured in up to 413 133 individuals from the UK Biobank. Interactive visualizations are provided through a browser to facilitate data exploration supported by false discovery rate control, and it includes tools for enrichment analysis. The interactive Mendelian randomization module in ExPheWas allows the estimation of causal effects of a genetically predicted exposure on an outcome by using genetic variation in a single gene as the instrumental variable.

The percentage of medicine graduates opting for residency in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) has been decreasing in developed countries, including in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. This multicountry study surveyed the OB/GYN residents affiliated with the Taiwan Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology (TAOG), the Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JSOG), and the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (KSOG) to evaluate the factors affecting the choice of pursing OB/GYN.

A 17-item questionnaire surveying the factors influencing the choice of pursuing a major medical specialty was translated into Japanese, Korean, and Chinese and administered to postgraduate OB/GYN residents between July 1, 2020, and August 31, 2020. Data on the participants' sex, age, and level of residency were collected. Responses were compared between countries and sexes.

Residents of all three countries chose OB/GYN based on personal interest, and a sense of accomplishment in saving people's life. Other positive factors include improved quality of life; higher salaries; and more opportunity for new techniques, research, and promotion. The negative factors included medical litigations, longer work hours, and unsafe working environments. Korean residents had lower ratings in several items, including "support from family," "safety of working environment," and "effectiveness of the alternative dispute resolution system," which, unlike Japan and Taiwan, is not a no-fault compensation system for childbirth accidents.

The study findings can guide strategy making, such as decreasing workload and yet maintain training quality, to increase the number of medical students pursuing OB/GYN residency.

Although considerable progress has been made in the development of new Co@C materials, research on the formation mechanism of these materials is lacking. Herein, the overall microcosmic structure of the Co@C catalyst was investigated by systematic characterization. Subsequently, a pseudo in situ method was employed to explore the detailed structure of the Co@C catalyst pyrolyzed at different temperatures. The special carbon environment of materials is essential for synthesizing materials during pyrolysis at high temperatures. Co ions were reduced to Co0 by the surrounding carbon atoms at a high temperature. In return, the surrounding carbon atoms were catalyzed by Co0 particles to form carbon nanotubes. However, with the obstruction of amorphous carbon atoms that are not in contact with Co0, the paths through which the carbon nanotubes move forward formed the porous structure of the catalyst, as well as the graphitic encapsulated structure. Further, the effects of pretreatment conditions on the structure and properties of the Co@C catalyst were studied systematically.Using 13 waves of longitudinal data from Australia, we examine the relationship between petrol prices and obesity. selleck inhibitor Applying panel data models that control for individual fixed effects and the endogeneity of petrol prices, our results suggest that petrol prices have a negative effect on obesity. Specifically, our preferred instrumental variable estimates, which instrument for petrol prices using the Arca Oil Stock price and control for individual and time fixed effects, suggest that a standard deviation increase in petrol prices generates a 0.006 standard deviation decline in body mass index, while a unit increase in petrol prices results in a 2 percentage point decrease in the probability that a survey participant is obese. These results are robust to several sensitivity checks. Back of the envelope calculations suggest that our results imply that a permanent $1 per liter increase in petrol prices would reduce the number of people who were obese by 672,000 and save $1.4 billion dollars in medical expenditure related to obesity every year. We also find that frequency of participation in physical activity and expenditure on meals eaten out are channels through which petrol prices affect obesity.Few prospective studies have examined associations between diet quality and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), or comprehensively compared diet quality indices. We conducted a prospective analysis of adherence to the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015, alternative HEI-2010, alternate Mediterranean diet (aMed), and 2 versions of Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH; Fung and Mellen) and PDAC within the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-AARP Diet and Health Study (United States, 1995-2011). The dietary quality indices were calculated using responses from a 124-item food frequency questionnaire completed by 535,824 participants (315,780 men and 220,044 women). We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to calculate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each diet quality index and PDAC. During follow-up through 2011 (15.5-year median), 3,137 incident PDAC cases were identified. Compared with those with the lowest adherence quintile, participants with the highest adherence to the HEI-2015 (HR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.75, 0.94), aMed (HR = 0.82, 95% CI 0.73, 0.93), DASH-Fung (HR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.77, 0.95), and DASH-Mellen (HR = 0.86, 95% CI 0.77, 0.96) had a statistically significant, lower PDAC risk; this was not found for the alternative HEI-2010 (HR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.83, 1.04). This prospective observational study supports the hypothesis that greater adherence to the HEI-2015, aMed, and DASH dietary recommendations may reduce PDAC.Carboxymethyl-glucan is a semi-synthetic derivative of β-D-glucan, a polysaccharide widely found in several natural sources, such as yeast, fungi, and cereals. This compound has beneficial effects on health and is considered an important immunomodulator. However, studies exploring carboxymethyl-glucan bioactivity in cardiovascular health remain lacking, mainly in hypertension. Thus, this study sought to expand understanding of the effects of carboxymethyl-glucan on vascular and platelet functions in a hypertensive animal model. Spontaneously hypertensive rats and their normotensive Wistar-Kyoto controls were assigned to five groups control, carboxymethyl-glucan (60 mg kg-1), control spontaneously hypertensive rats, spontaneously hypertensive rats carboxymethyl-glucan (20 mg kg-1), and spontaneously hypertensive rats carboxymethyl-glucan (60 mg kg-1). Animals were treated for four weeks with carboxymethyl-glucan at doses of 20 and 60 mg kg-1 orally, and control rats received saline as a placebo. Vascular reactivity, platelet aggregation, and reactive oxygen species production were evaluated at the end of treatment. The results showed that carboxymethyl-glucan improved vascular function and reduced platelet aggregation, mainly at a 60 mg kg-1 dose. However, despite these effects, there was no reduction in levels of reactive oxygen species. These findings suggested that carboxymethyl-glucan modulates endothelial function. It also acts as a platelet antiaggregant, which is an interesting resource for managing hypertension and its thrombotic complications.

This research was planned to identify nurse managers' opinions on artificial intelligence and robot nurses.

As the concepts of artificial intelligence and robot nurses are becoming widespread in Turkey, nurse managers are expected to guide and cooperate with nurses in the future in regard to these technologies.

The sample of the study consisted of 326 manager nurses, who were reached via the online questionnaire during the period of September to November 2021. A Nurse Managers Information Form and a Question Form on Artificial Intelligence and Robot Nurses were used to collect data. Data in this cross-sectional descriptive study were collected between September 2021 and November 2021 by the online survey method. The descriptive statistics of the data were analysed with numbers and percentages. The difference between the knowledge of artificial intelligence and robot nurses and demographic characteristics was analysed with the chi-square test.

According to the findings, 66.9% of the nurse managers repot safety and ethical problems regarding the use of artificial intelligence and robot nurses should be identified.Time trade-off utilities have been suggested to be biased upwards. This bias is a result of the method being applied assuming linear utility of life duration, which is violated when individuals discount future life years or are loss averse for health. Applying a "corrective approach", that is, measuring individuals' discount function and loss aversion and correcting time trade-off utilities for these individual characteristics, may reduce this bias in utilities. Earlier work has developed this approach for time trade-off in a student sample. In this study, the corrective approach was extended to composite time trade-off (cTTO) methodology, which enabled correcting utilities for health states worse than dead. In digital interviews a sample of 150 members of the general public completed cTTO tasks for six health states, and afterward they completed measurements of loss aversion and discounting. cTTO utilities were corrected using these measurements under multiple specifications. Respondents were also asked to reflect on and adjust their cTTO utilities directly. Our results show considerable loss aversion and both positive and negative discounting were prevalent. As predicted, correction generally resulted in lower utilities. This was in accordance with the direction of adjustments made by respondents themselves.Modulation of slow-wave activity, either via pharmacological sleep induction by administering sodium oxybate or sleep restriction followed by a strong dissipation of sleep pressure, has been associated with preserved posttraumatic cognition and reduced diffuse axonal injury in traumatic brain injury rats. Although these classical strategies provided promising preclinical results, they lacked the specificity and/or translatability needed to move forward into clinical applications. Therefore, we recently developed and implemented a rodent auditory stimulation method that is a scalable, less invasive and clinically meaningful approach to modulate slow-wave activity by targeting a particular phase of slow waves. Here, we assessed the feasibility of down-phase targeted auditory stimulation of slow waves and evaluated its comparative modulatory strength in relation to the previously employed slow-wave activity modulators in our rat model of traumatic brain injury. Our results indicate that, in spite of effectively reducing slow-wave activity in both healthy and traumatic brain injury rats via down-phase targeted stimulation, this method was not sufficiently strong to counteract the boost in slow-wave activity associated with classical modulators, nor to alter concomitant posttraumatic outcomes.
