Understanding comorbid conditions with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)is critical for clinical decision-making regarding the choice of pharmacotherapy. This study aimed at describing the prevalence and co-prevalence of comorbidities, including chronic kidney disease(CKD) and cardiovascular disease(CVD) (coronary artery disease(CAD), cerebrovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease(PAD) and congestive heart failure(CHF)) among patients withT2DM.

A cross-sectional multi-center observational study on 300 patients with T2DM. Data were collected from patients' records during the enrollment visit.

Overall, 38%, 10% and 2% of the patients had one, two and three comorbidities, respectively, with the number of comorbidities significantly increasing with age. The most prevalent comorbidities were CVD(17.3%), CAD(15%) and CKD (44.3%), mostly stages 2 and 3. However, the prevalence of CHF (0.7%), PAD (2.3%) and cerebrovascular diseases (1.3%) was low. The highest percentage of anti-hyperglycemic agents used was metformin (81%), dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (46%), sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (37%), insulin (36%) and sulfonylurea (34%). Oxidative stress is an important contributor to the etiology of atrial fibrillation (AF). Our aim was to study oxidative stress biomarkers in patients undergoing pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for paroxysmal AF with radiofrequency catheter ablation and to assess its prognostic value in predicting long-term PVI outcome.

In this prospective cohort study, we included 62 patients (mean age 55±8 years, 12 females and 50 males) with paroxysmal AF and implanted ECG loop recorders who underwent PVI. Plasmatic concentrations of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), fructosamine, advanced oxidation protein products, and thiobarbituric-acid reacting substances were measured before PVI. AF burden (percentage of time spent in AF) was continually assessed during the follow-up period (1063±271 days).

Nineteen patients (31%) were defined as optimal responders (oR) with AF burden < 0.5% after PVI. Remaining 43 patients (69%) were defined as sub-optimal responders. Concentration of AGEs was significantly lower in oR by 3.7 g/g (CI -6.5 to -1.7; P=0.0003). After adjustment for age, sex, BMI, left atrial size, arterial hypertension, and AF burden before PVI, only low concentration of AGEs remained significantly associated with oR (odds ratio 1.3; P=0.04). AGEs concentration achieved area under the curve of 0.78 for predicting optimal long-term PVI response.

This study aimed to explore the psychosocial impacts of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on cancer patients, survivors, and carers in Australia.

Using real-time insights from two Cancer Council NSW services-131120 Information and Support Line and Online Community (CCOC) forums-we assessed service demand trends, distress levels (using the distress thermometer), and content from 131120 calls and online posts between 01 December 2019 and 31 May 2020. selleck chemical Emergent themes were identified through an inductive conventional content analysis with 131120 call notes, followed by a deductive directed content analysis on CCOC posts.

Patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) have a median age of 67, with 70% surviving over 5 years. Chemotherapy for aggressive NHL includes cyclophosphamide, anthracycline, and high doses of corticosteroids, which can impair bone health. By reviewing clinical characteristics and standard-of-care CT scans, we evaluate the prevalence and incidence of fractures and the clinical correlates of fractures in patients treated for aggressive B-cell NHL.

We retrospectively reviewed patients seen at the University of California San Francisco lymphoma clinic from January 1, 2016, to March 31, 2017 who had (1) aggressive B-cell NHL, (2) received first-line therapy with R-CHOP-like regimens, and had (3) CT scans pre- and post-treatment available for review. Associations between clinical variables and vertebral, rib, and pelvic fracture outcomes were assessed, and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of prevalent and incident fractures.

We identified 162 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Median age at diagnosis was 60 years. Of the 162 patients, 38 patients (28%) had prevalent fractures prior to receiving chemotherapy. Within 1 year after treatment, 16 patients (10%) developed new fractures. Having a prevalent fracture strongly predicted developing a new fracture after treatment, with incident fractures occurring in 12 of 38 patients with prevalent fractures versus 4 of 124 without prevalent fractures (odds ratio 10.45, p<0.0005).

Our results suggest that patients with aggressive B-cell NHL who receive R-CHOP-like therapy should be screened for fractures prior to treatment and those with existing fractures should be considered for therapy to decrease risk of new fractures.

Patients who undergo surgery and adjuvant radiation treatment for head and neck cancer often develop dysphagia as a result of this treatment. Improvements in swallow function may be achieved with exercise. The goal of this pilot study was to compare the effectiveness and perceived difficulty of using the head lift exercise and the recline exercise to activate the suprahyoid musculature in 8 individuals with a history of head and neck cancer.

Muscle activation using surface electromyography was examined to determine if the recline exercise activates the suprahyoid muscle groups to the same degree as the head lift exercise. Participants also rated the exertion they experienced to assess how easily patients are able to complete the exercises.

The majority of participants completed both exercises in their entirety on their first attempt. However, ratings of perceived exertion were significantly lower for the recline exercise than the head lift exercise. The head lift exercise activated the suprahyoid muscule as it activates target musculature more effectively than the recline exercise.

There is no concrete evidence to support the association between the amount of subcutaneous fat area (SFA) in the central venous port-insertion site (precordium) and port-related complications. We aimed to investigate the relationship between SFA in the midclavicular line and postoperative infectious complications in patients undergoing port-insertion surgery.

This was a single-institute and historical cohort study of 174 patients who underwent first central venous port implantation surgery for chemotherapy between January 2014 and December 2018. SFA in the midclavicular line was measured using preoperative computed tomography scans. The patients were divided into three groups according to SFA amount tertiles, and we investigated the association of SFA with infectious and all-cause complication events within 1 year.

Within a median follow-up of 306 days, the patients with intermediate SFA had significantly higher infection-free survival than those with low and high SFA (low vs. intermediate vs. high 80.4% vs. 97.7% vs. 83.4%, respectively, p=0.034).
