This effect persists even in well-studied faunas. These results suggest that sampling planktonic larvae offers access to a different subset of species and thus significantly increases estimates of biodiversity compared to sampling adults alone. Spanish abstract is available in the electronic supplementary material.Daily torpor is a means of saving energy by controlled lowering of the metabolic rate (MR) during resting, usually coupled with a decrease in body temperature. We studied nocturnal daily torpor under natural conditions in free-living common swifts Apus apus resting in their nests as a family using two non-invasive approaches. First, we monitored nest temperature (Tnest) in up to 50 occupied nests per breeding season in 2010-2015. Drops in Tnest were the first indication of torpor. Among 16 673 observations, we detected 423 events of substantial drops in Tnest of on average 8.6°C. Second, we measured MR of the families inside nest-boxes prepared for calorimetric measurements during cold periods in the breeding seasons of 2017 and 2018. We measured oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production using a mobile indirect respirometer and calculated the percentage reduction in MR. During six torpor events observed, MR was gradually reduced by on average 56% from the reference value followed by a decrease in Tnest of on average 7.6°C. By contrast, MR only decreased by about 33% on nights without torpor. Our field data gave an indication of daily torpor, which is used as a strategy for energy saving in free-living common swifts.Megafauna play a disproportionate role in developing and maintaining their biomes, by regulating plant dispersal, community structure and nutrient cycling. Understanding the ecological roles of extinct megafaunal communities, for example through dietary reconstruction using isotope analysis, is necessary to determine pre-human states and set evidence-based restoration goals. We use δ13C and δ15N isotopic analyses to reconstruct Holocene feeding guilds in Madagascar's extinct megaherbivores, which included elephant birds, hippopotami and giant tortoises that occurred across multiple habitats and elevations. We compare isotopic data from seven taxa and two elephant bird eggshell morphotypes against contemporary regional floral baselines to infer dietary subsistence strategies. Most taxa show high consumption of C3 and/or CAM plants, providing evidence of widespread browsing ecology. However, Aepyornis hildebrandti, an elephant bird restricted to the central highlands region, has isotope values with much higher δ13C values than other taxa. This species is interpreted as having obtained up to 48% of its diet from C4 grasses. These findings provide new evidence for distinct browsing and grazing guilds in Madagascar's Holocene megaherbivore fauna, with implications for past regional distribution of ecosystems dominated by endemic C4 grasses.Intracellular ligands that bind heavy metals (HMs) and thereby minimize their detrimental effects to cellular metabolism are attracting great interest for a number of applications including bioremediation and development of HM-biosensors. Metallothioneins (MTs) are short, cysteine-rich, genetically encoded proteins involved in intracellular metal-binding and play a key role in detoxification of HMs. We searched approximately 700 genomes and transcriptomes of non-ciliate protists for novel putative MTs by similarity and structural analyses and found 21 unique proteins playing a potential role as MTs. Most putative MTs derive from heterokonts and dinoflagellates and share common features such as (i) a putative metal-binding domain in proximity of the N-terminus, (ii) two putative MT-specific domains near the C-terminus and (iii) one to three CTCGXXCXCGXXCXCXXC patterns. Although the biological function of these proteins has not been experimentally proven, knowledge of their genetic sequences adds useful information on proteins that are potentially involved in HM-binding and can contribute to the design of future biomolecular assays on HM-microbe interactions and MT-based biosensors. The Hemiptera, with approximately 98 000 species, is one of the largest insect orders. Most species feed by sucking sap from plant tissues and are thus often vectors for economically important phytopathogens. Well known within this group are the large cicadas (Cicadomorpha Cicadoidea Cicadidae) because they produce extremely loud airborne sounds. Less well known are their mostly tiny relatives, the leafhoppers, spittlebugs, treehoppers and planthoppers that communicate by silent vibrational signals. While the generation of these signals has been extensively investigated, the mechanisms of their perception are poorly understood. This study provides a complete description and three-dimensional reconstruction of a large and complex array of mechanoreceptors in the first abdominal segments of the Rhododendron leafhopper Graphocephala fennahi (Cicadomorpha Membracoidea Cicadellidae). Further, we identify homologous organs in the spittlebug Philaenus spumarius (Cicadomorpha Cercopoidea Aphrophoridae) and the planthopper Issus coleoptratus (Fulgoromorpha Fulgoroidea Issidae). Sapogenins Glycosides price Such large abdominal sensory arrays have not been found in any other insect orders studied so far. This indicates that these sense organs, together with the signal-producing tymbal organ, constitute a synapomorphy of the Tymbalia (Hemiptera excl. Sternorrhyncha). Our results contribute to the understanding of the evolution from substrate-borne to airborne communication in insects.Introduction To date, some data available in literature on simultaneous bilateral endoscopic surgery (SBES) have shown good outcomes in terms of both effectiveness and safety. The aim of this study was to report the outcomes pertaining to the effectiveness and safety of SBES performed in our series of patients with bilateral renal stones. Materials and Methods A prospective analysis of consecutive patients who underwent SBES for bilateral renal stones at our institution between June 2017 and September 2021 was performed. Routine preoperative and 1-month postoperative work-up included history, physical examination, urinalysis, urine culture, and blood tests, including the evaluation of estimated glomerular filtration rate using the Cockcroft-Gault equation. An abdominal noncontrast CT scan was performed in all cases preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively. Peri-/postoperative complications were reported according to the Clavien-Dindo classification system. The primary endpoint of the study was stone-free rautcomes without experiencing severe complications.Purpose Automated performance metrics (APMs), derived from instrument kinematic and systems events data during robotic surgery, are validated objective measures of surgeon performance. Our previous studies showed that APMs are strong outcome predictors of urinary continence after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). We now use machine learning to investigate how surgeon performance (i.e., APMs) and clinical factors can predict positive surgical margins (PSMs) after RARP. Methods We prospectively collected data of patients undergoing RARP at our institution from 2016 to 2019. Random Forest model predicted PSMs based on 15 clinical factors and 38 APMs from 11 standardized RARP steps. Out-of-bag Gini impurity index determined the top 10 variables of importance (VOI). APMs in the top 10 VOI were assessed for confounding effects by extracapsular extension (ECE) and pathologic T (pT) through Poisson regression with Generalized Estimating Equation. Results 55/236 (23.3%) cases had PSMs. Of the 55 cases with PSMs, 9 (16.4%) were pT2 and 46 (83.6%), pT3. The full model, including clinical factors and APMs, achieved area under the curve (AUC) 0.74. When assessing clinical factors or APMs alone, the model achieved AUC 0.72 and 0.64, respectively. The strongest PSM predictors were ECE and pT stage, followed by APMs in specific steps. After adjusting for ECE and pT stage, most APMs remained as independent predictors of PSM. Conclusion Using machine learning methods, we found that the strongest predictors of PSMs after RARP are nonmodifiable, disease-driven factors (ECE and pT). While APMs provide minimal additional insight into when PSMs may occur, they are nonetheless capable of independently predicting PSMs based on objective measures of surgeon performance.Fouling of surfaces in prolonged contact with liquid often leads to detrimental alteration of material properties and performance. A wide range of factors which include mass transport, surface properties and surface interactions dictate whether foulants are able to adhere to a surface. Passive means of foulant rejection, such as the microscopic patterns, have been known to develop in nature. In this work, we investigate the anti-fouling behaviour of animal fur and its apparent passive resistance to fouling. We compare the fouling performance of several categories of natural and manufactured fibres, and present correlations between contamination susceptibility and physio-mechanical properties of the fibre and its environment. Lastly, we present a correlation between the fouling intensity of a fibre and the cumulative impact of multiple interacting factors declared in the form of a dimensionless group. Artificial and natural hair strands exhibit comparable anti-fouling behaviour in flow, however, the absence of flow improves the performance of some artificial fibres. Among the plethora of factors affecting the fouling of fur hair, the dimensionless groups we present herein provide the best demarcation between fibres of different origin.Aspergillus species are ubiquitous environmental moulds, with spores inhaled daily by most humans. Immunocompromised hosts can develop an invasive infection resulting in high mortality. There is, therefore, a pressing need for host-centric therapeutics for this infection. To address it, we created a multi-scale computational model of the infection, focused on its interaction with the innate immune system and iron, a critical nutrient for the pathogen. The model, parameterized using published data, was found to recapitulate a wide range of biological features and was experimentally validated in vivo. Conidial swelling was identified as critical in fungal strains with high growth, whereas the siderophore secretion rate seems to be an essential prerequisite for the establishment of the infection in low-growth strains. In immunocompetent hosts, high growth, high swelling probability and impaired leucocyte activation lead to a high conidial germination rate. Similarly, in neutropenic hosts, high fungal growth was achieved through synergy between high growth rate, high swelling probability, slow leucocyte activation and high siderophore secretion. In summary, the model reveals a small set of parameters related to fungal growth, iron acquisition and leucocyte activation as critical determinants of the fate of the infection. The stochastic processes underlying the growth and stability of biological and psychological systems reveal themselves when far-from-equilibrium. Far-from-equilibrium, non-ergodicity reigns. Non-ergodicity implies that the average outcome for a group/ensemble (i.e. of representative organisms/minds) is not necessarily a reliable estimate of the average outcome for an individual over time. However, the scientific interest in causal inference suggests that we somehow aim at stable estimates of the cause that will generalize to new individuals in the long run. Therefore, the valid analysis must extract an ergodic stationary measure from fluctuating physiological data. So the challenge is to extract statistical estimates that may describe or quantify some of this non-ergodicity (i.e. of the raw measured data) without themselves (i.e. the estimates) being non-ergodic. We show that traditional linear statistics such as the standard deviation, coefficient of variation and root mean square can break ergodicity. Time series of statistics addressing sequential structure and its potential nonlinearity fractality and multi-fractality, change in a time-independent way and fulfil the ergodic assumption.
