Colic is a common digestive disorder in horses and one of the most urgent problems in equine medicine. A growing body of literature has indicated that the activation of cannabinoid receptors could exert beneficial effects on gastrointestinal inflammation and visceral hypersensitivity. The localisation of cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors in the intestine of the horse has not yet been investigated. The purpose of this study was to immunohistochemically localise the cellular distribution of canonical and putative cannabinoid receptors in the ileum of healthy horses. Distal ileum specimens were collected from six horses at the slaughterhouse. The tissues were fixed and processed to obtain cryosections which were used to investigate the immunoreactivity of canonical cannabinoid receptors 1 (CB1R) and 2 (CB2R), and three putative cannabinoid-related receptors nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα), transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 and serotonin 5-HT1a receptor (5-HT1aR). Cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors showed a wide distribution in the ileum of the horse. The epithelial cells showed immunoreactivity for CB1R, CB2R and 5-HT1aR. Lamina propria inflammatory cells showed immunoreactivity for CB2R and 5-HT1aR. The enteric neurons showed immunoreactivity for CB1R, transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 and PPARα. The enteric glial cells showed immunoreactivity for CB1R and PPARα. The smooth muscle cells of the tunica muscularis and the blood vessels showed immunoreactivity for PPARα. The present study represents a histological basis which could support additional studies regarding the distribution of cannabinoid receptors during gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases as well as studies assessing the effects of non-psychotic cannabis-derived molecules in horses for the management of intestinal diseases.The aim of this study was to investigate, the effect of different levels of concentrates and grain processing on feeding behavior, nutrient digestibility, fecal pH and blood metabolites in the horse. Sixteen 5 to 11 years old Turkmen horses with an initial body weight 433±50 kg were used in this experiment based on completely randomized design. Four treatments were studied, in three treatments were used 20, 25 and 30% of concentrate containing processed grains (A20, A25 and A30, respectively), and in one treatment was used 25% of concentrate containing whole grain (B25). The amount of feed intake, chewing and swallowing rate and total intake for forage and concentrate were not affected by experimental treatments (P> .05). By increasing the concentrate level up to 30%, the digestibility coefficients of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ash-free neutral detergent fiber, ash-free acid detergent fiber and digestible energy increased. The highest digestibility coefficients were observed in A30 treatment (P 0.05). The concentration of glucose increased with increasing concentrate for treatment A30 (P less then 0.05). check details In conclusion, comparing the two levels of 25% concentrate showed that the use of processed grains compared to unprocessed grains had no effect on feeding behavior, fecal pH and blood parameters. The use of 30% concentrate containing processed grains improved digestion without adversely affecting feeding behavior and fecal pH.The poor soft tissue conspicuity of CT can be improved by using intra-arterial CT Angiography (CTA), and intra-articular and intra-bursal contrast enhanced CT (CTAR). This retrospective study describes a combination protocol of CT and CTA of the horse's foot, and CTAR of the distal interphalangeal joint and navicular bursa. It is hypothesized this would provide a comprehensive overview of the range and severity of distal limb pathology. Radiology reports of all horses admitted for distal limb CT over a 5 year period were reviewed. All horses with a complete four stage CT examination and radiology report with lameness isolated to the foot were included. Twenty seven imaging findings using a four grade semiquantitative severity scoring system contributing towards six main diagnostic categories were described. One hundred and five examinations on 56 horses revealed a diagnosis of navicular bone disease in 64%, deep digital flexor tendinopathy in 43%, distal interphalangeal osteoarthritis in 35%, navicular bursitis in 31%, distal interphalangeal collateral ligament desmopathy in 26%, and hoof capsule and distal phalanx pathology in 10%. Only 25% of the navicular bone disease cases were considered clinically significant. The majority of deep digital flexor tendon lesions (77%) and distal interphalangeal joint osteoarthritis (51%) were considered significant. Approximately one third of navicular bursa (37%) and collateral ligament (33%) abnormalities were considered significant. Navicular bursa abnormalities were associated with navicular bone and deep digital flexor tendon lesions. The findings support the hypothesis and the use of this protocol for evaluation of foot lameness.Heart rate is evaluated in exercising horses to monitor the level of fitness to exercise, and it is usually acquired using heart rate monitors (HRM) or telemetric electrocardiograms (ECG). While HRM are commonly available and easy-to-use for horse's owners, ECG is a more expensive equipment requiring user's experience. Interest for heart rate variability (HRV) in horses is increasing for both research and clinical purposes. HRV is usually calculated from interbeat intervals (IBI) obtained by ECG. The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of an HRM to detect IBI for the calculation of HRV in both resting and exercising horses. Simultaneous ECG and HRM recordings were performed on 13 horses and ponies under normal training conditions for at least 45 minutes. IBI from ECG were corrected using a dedicated software. IBI from HRM were exported without correction. Two HRV-parameters were calculated on both recordings for resting and exercising periods the standard deviation of R-R intervals (SDRR) and the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD). Agreement and concordance between the two systems were determined using Bland-Altman plot and Lin's correlation coefficient, respectively. Effects of variables were consequently assessed. For both HRV-parameters during resting and exercising periods, the means of the differences between the two systems were lower than 0.47 ms with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.999. Height, weight and body condition score had no effect on the results. The studied HRM could be of interest as easy-to-use device for obtaining HRV-parameters SDRR and RMSSD in resting and exercising horses.Exercise-associated sudden deaths (EASDs) are deaths occurring unexpectedly during or immediately after exercise. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is one cause of EASD. Cardiac arrhythmias caused by genetic variants have been linked to SCD in humans. We hypothesize that genetic variants may be associated with SCD in animals, including horses. Genetic variants are transmitted to offspring and their frequency might increase within a family. Therefore, the frequency of such variants might increase with the inbreeding factor. Higher inbreeding could have a negative impact on racing performance. Pedigree data and career earnings from racehorses diagnosed with SCD between 2002 and 2017 were compared using non-parametric tests with 1) control horses that died due to catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries and 2) horses that raced during the same period without reported problems. Diagnosis of SCD was based on necropsy reports, including macroscopic and microscopic examinations. Death was registered in the study period for 61 horses. Eleven of these horses were excluded due to missing autopsy reports. In 25 cases, the diagnosis remained unknown and death was possibly caused by cardiac arrhythmia, in two cases cardiac disease was identified, in seven cases a rupture of a major vessel had occurred. In addition, 16 horses died or were euthanized due to severe musculoskeletal injuries. No significant differences in inbreeding coefficients or in career earnings were found between the groups or between horses with EASD compared with other horses racing during the same period. The study provides no evidence for increased inbreeding factor in Finnish racehorses with SCD.The aim of this study was to determine if bi-weekly administration of diclazuril at half the label dose would reduce seroprevalence and magnitude of titers to S. neurona in healthy horses naturally exposed to the apicomplexan protozoal parasite. 12 healthy adult horses were moved from a low-risk exposure to a farm with high exposure rate to S. neurona in their horse population. The horses were randomly assigned to either a treatment or a control group. Treatment consisted in the administration of half the label dose (0.5 mg/kg) of diclazuril (Protazil) pelleted top dress twice weekly (every 3-4 days) for 12 months. Prior to initiation of treatment and monthly thereafter, blood was collected for the detection of antibodies to S. neurona using a quantitative immunoassay. Further, trough plasma diclazuril levels were determined every 60 days. All 20 horses remained healthy during the entire study period. Seroprevalence to S. neurona decreased initially in the treatment group to 50% at 30 days post-treatment commencement. This was followed by a slow increase in seroprevalence in the treatment group before reaching 100% in both groups by 90 days post-treatment commencement. The seroprevalence remained 100% in both groups from 90 to 360 study days. While titer distribution between the two groups was similar at study commencement, treated horses had significantly lower titers throughout the treatment period (P less then 0.05). All treated study horses had detectable plasma trough diclazuril levels at the 6 time points and the levels were above the concentration known to inhibit S. neurona in vitro (1.0 ng/mL). The administration of diclazuril pelleted top dress at half the label dose twice weekly was able to maintain low titers to S. neurona in healthy adult horses naturally exposed to the protozoal parasite. Further, trough diclazuril levels were in excess of the minimal concentration known to inhibit S. neurona.A commercially available equine fecal blood test (FBT) claims to be able to detect the presence of blood proteins (albumin and hemoglobin) in manure. The purpose of this study was to determine the FBT test sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV), lower threshold of detection, time to obtain a visual positive result, effect of temperature and result stability in lab and field conditions. The FBT was assessed for its sensitivity and specificity for detecting pure albumin and hemoglobin at two temperatures over a range of concentrations. Time to result was measured for up to 60 minutes. PPV and NPV were assessed by measuring albumin and hemoglobin in manure from 13 pleasure horses over 25 days. Laboratory tests of hemoglobin alone, albumin alone, and hemoglobin and albumin combined were tested over a range of concentrations from 0.0125 ppm to 50 ppm. In the field study, fresh (within 30 minutes) manure was sampled and tested for proteins using the FBT. The FBT was both sensitive and specific to hemoglobin and albumin.
