an-dominated drainage basins. This study, for the first time, provides water clarity information for lakes with area ≥ 1 ha all over the world with 30-m resolution and facilitates the understanding of the water clarity relevant to TSM (r = 0.95), Chl-a (r = 0.73), total phosphorus (r = 0.75), total nitrogen (r = 0.60), which could further provide water clarity data and technical support for trophic level evaluations as well. This unified model could serve as a powerful research tool for long-term monitoring of aquatic ecosystems and assessing their resilience to anthropogenic disturbance and climate change-related stressors.Shallow thaw (thermokarst) lakes abundant in regions of permafrost-affected peatlands represent important sources of carbon dioxide and methane emission to the atmosphere, however the quantitative parameters of phytoplankton communities which control the C cycle in these lakes remain poorly known. This is especially true considering the roles of permafrost, hydrochemical composition of lakes, lake sizes and season as major governing factors on phytoplankton abundance and biodiversity. In this work, we quantified phytoplankton characteristics of 27 thermokarst lakes (sizes ranging from 115 m2 to 1.24 km2) sampled in spring, summer and autumn across a permafrost gradient (isolated, sporadic, discontinuous and continuous zone) in the Western Siberia Lowland (WSL). The biodiversity indices were highest during all seasons in lakes of the continuous permafrost zone and rather similar in lakes of isolated, sporadic and discontinuous permafrost zone. Considering all seasons and permafrost zones, the biomass and cell share of cyanobacteria and diatoms may increase. The temperature of the rivers in the Qilian Mountains, China varies widely from day to night, and Gymnocypris chilianensis living in these rivers may experience a change of 10 °C to 20 °C within a day. To explore the mechanisms underlying G. chilianensis responses to heat stress, we conducted an acute temperature stress experiment. In response to heat stress, levels of antioxidant enzymes (SOD\CAT\MDA) first increased and then decreased with time, but T-AOC levels only decreased. The activities of key glycolytic enzymes HK and PFK in the liver also first increased and then decreased and transaminase (AST/ALT) activity increased significantly. We obtained 5350 significantly different genes through transcriptome sequencing with enrichment pathways including primarily glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, cysteine and methionine metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, fructose and mannose metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and fatty acid degradation. A total of 457 differential metabolites were identified in the liver under thermal stress, most of which are involved in biochemical pathways of amino acid metabolism. Biosynthesis of amino acids indicated that G. chilianensis maintained physiological homeostasis by enhancing glucose metabolism and regulating lipid and amino acid metabolism pathways under thermal stress. We also randomly selected 12 key response genes for validation using qRT-PCR. This is the first study describing the mechanisms underlying responses to thermal stress in G. chilianensis, and may also provide reference data for the study of environmental mutations in indigenous fish in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Qilian Mountains.Pharmaceutical micropollutants' contamination of urban waters has been studied globally for decades, but the concentration of innovations in management initiatives is still in developed economies. The gap between the locus of innovations in pharmaceuticals and the relative stagnation in less developed economies to manage waste originating in this activity seems fruitful for investigations on innovation in integrated micropollutant management strategies. These tensions allow for advances in current knowledge for environmental management and, particularly, finding solutions for the contamination by pharmaceutical micropollutants of urban water bodies in developing countries. We aim to list the main strategies for managing pharmaceutical micropollutants discussed to point out opportunities for developing countries to advance in this direction. Methodologically, we conducted a systematic literature review from 1990 to 2020, covering 3027 documents on "pharmaceutical micropollutants management." The framework formr developing societies. These opportunities can be promising for practices and research and, in the medium term, contribute to minimizing pollution by pharmaceutical micropollutants in urban waters.PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in urban areas are usually bound to particles. Concentrations are different in different compartments (airborne particles, street dust, suspended sediments in rivers and channels). This study follows concentrations of PAHs from particles in air to street dust and finally suspended sediments in the city of Tehran, Iran compared to Tübingen, Germany. Data sets are based on own investigations (PAHs on suspended sediments), or taken from literature studies (PAHs in street dust and airborne particles). Based on a cross-comparison of concentrations of PAHs on particles, and their congener distribution patterns, the occurrence, interrelation (exchange and mixing processes), as well as possible dilution processes among PAHs in the different particle classes are disentangled. Results show that for Tehran and Tübingen PAHs in airborne particles are very high (in the range of 500 mg kg-1). However, in street dust and suspended sediments PAHs concentrations on particles are around 100 times lower. Surprisingly concentrations in street dust and suspended sediments are 5 to 10 times lower in Tehran (average 0.5 mg kg-1) than in Tübingen (average 5 mg kg-1). Since it is unlikely that PAHs emissions are lower in the Tehran megacity, an effective dilution of the atmospheric signal by uncontaminated (background) particles is hypothesized. Uncontaminated particles may stem from wind erosion of bare surfaces, construction and sand mining sites or even dust from the desert areas, which are frequent in arid climate in Tehran.Fenton-like catalysts represent a family of promising materials to degrade micropollutants from contaminated water. However, the practical applications of Fenton-like catalysts are mainly limited by low catalytic degradation efficiency and stability. Herein, for the first time, rapid fabrication of Ag-decorated Fe3O4/polydopamine (FPA) microspheres was achieved via the help of UV irradiation, and the designed FPA microspheres were employed as Fenton-like catalysts to degrade micropollutants. Results showed that UV irradiation could activate the generation of the polydopamine shell and accelerate the Ag deposition, which played a crucial role in the rapid synthesis of highly active and stable FPA catalysts. Relative to reported catalysts, these FPA microspheres exhibited outstanding catalytic degradation performance, achieving 94.38% removal of tetracycline within 60 min. This work will provide a convenient strategy in the sustainable and efficient purification of wastewater to improve the quality of human life.Drinking water and farm-to-fork pathways have been identified as the predominant environmental pathways associated with human exposure (HE) to Pb. This study integrates a GIS-based survey of metal concentrations in soil and a probabilistic quantitative risk assessment of Pb through the food chain. The case study area was selected in the east of Ireland. A step-wise exposure assessment collated the data for Pb concentration in soil and water media, bioaccumulation of Pb in unprocessed food products, such as potatoes, carrots, green vegetables, and salad vegetables. The daily mean HE to Pb through selected food products was found to be 0.073 mg day-1, where a mean weekly exposure was estimated as 0.0065 mg kg body weight-1 week-1. Multiple risk estimates were used. Hazard Quotient (HQ), Daily Dietary Index (DDI), Daily Intake of Metal (DIM), Health Risk Index (HRI), Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) and Cancer Risk (CR) were found as 0.234 to 0.669, 0.002, 0.0002, 0.020 to 0.057, 0.234 to 0.669, and 0.00001, respectively which signify a low to moderate risk. A sensitivity analysis revealed that intake of potato is the most sensitive parameter of the model, which is positively correlated (coeff. + 0.66) followed by concentration of Pb in the arable soil (+0.49), bioaccumulation in tubers (+0.37), consumption of salad vegetables (+0.20), and consumption of green vegetables (+0.13) (top 5). A back-calculated limit of Pb in the soil (51 mg kg-1) justifies the lower threshold limit of Pb (50-300 mg kg-1) in agricultural soil set by the European Union to mitigate potential bio-transfer into food products. The study concludes there is a low to moderate risk posed by Pb, within the system boundary of the probabilistic model, and highlights the significance of limiting Pb concentrations in the vegetable producing agricultural soil.Contaminated sediments can pose long-term risks to human beings and ecosystems as they accumulate inorganic and organic contaminants becoming a sink and source of pollution. Compared to ex-situ technologies (i.e., dredging activities and off site treatments), in-situ capping (ISC) intends to minimize contaminated sediment mobilization and impact into the water column whilst treating contamination. Literature shows that numerous types of ISC amendments in presence of both organic and inorganic pollutants are investigated, although a few are contributions whose experiments have been designed and conducted with a view to future engineering. Against this background of shortcomings, this review paper intends to investigate ISC reliability, applicability and its long-term effectiveness, by also comparing reactive and physical ISCs. Additionally, an examination of the main numerical simulations applied to ISC technology was carried out. We found that activated carbon and organoclay resulted the most studied amendments for organically contaminated sediment, whereas biochar, clay minerals, and industrial-by products were more employed in presence of sediment contaminated by metal(loids). There is no better ISC system in absolute terms, since technological performance depends on many factors and only a few experimental investigations included a long-term modeling phase to predict ISC long-term efficiency. Most of numerical models included simplified transport equations based on diffusion and adsorption, and the goodness of fitting between experimental and modeled data was not always computed. The review finally discusses new research directions such as the need for long-term applications on field-scale and cap effectiveness in presence of site-specific tidal forces and currents.Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex disorder characterized by a broad spectrum of symptoms that evolve throughout the disease. Symptoms can be categorized as visible and invisible based on external sight recognition. However, although others poorly recognize it, invisible symptoms such as mood dysfunction, neuropathic pain, or fatigue can significantly affect activities of daily living and the quality of life of people with MS (PwMS). see more PwMS frequently complain of fatigue, which has physical or cognitive manifestations. Fatigue in MS does not improve or resolve with rest, and it is disproportionate with respect to the exerted effort. Fatigue management in MS is challenging, and a few pharmacological approaches have been successfully proposed. Among them, the drug modafinil has attracted attention because of its properties as a synthetic psychoactive drug. In this review, we focus on the evidence available to date, supporting the use of modafinil in MS fatigue. However, despite the availability of some trials evaluating the effects of modafinil on fatigue, their contrasting results failed to support its usefulness in fatigue management in MS.
