For patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis, whether additional posterior fixation can further improve segmental alignment is unknown, compared with stand-alone cage insertion in oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) procedure. The aim of this study was to compare changes of the radiographical segmental alignment following stand-alone cage insertion and additional posterior fixation in the same procedure setting of OLIF for patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis.

A retrospective observational study. Selected consecutive patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis underwent OLIF procedure from July 2017 to August 2019. Five radiographic parameters of disc height (DH), DH-Anterior, DH-Posterior, slip ratio and segmental lordosis (SL) were measured on preoperative CT scans and intraoperative fluoroscopic images. Comparisons of those radiographic parameters prior to cage insertion, following cage insertion and following posterior fixation were performed.

A total of thirty-three patients includi± 43.9%, and the SL was increased from 8.3 ± 3.0° to 10.7 ± 3.6° (p = 0.008).

Sulfation of tyrosine, yielding O-sulfotyrosine, is a common but fixed post-translational modification in eukaryotes. Patients with increased circulating O-sulfotyrosine levels experience a faster decline in renal function with progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In the present study, we measured serum O-sulfotyrosine levels in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) to explore its ability to differentiate AKI from CKD.

A total of 135 patients (20 with AKI and 115 with CKD) were recruited prospectively for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry assessment of circulating O-sulfotyrosine. We also studied C57BL/6 mice with CKD after 5/6 nephrectomy (Nx). Blood samples were drawn from the tail vein on Day 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 30, 60, and 90 after CKD. Serum separation and characterization of creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and O-sulfotyrosine was performed. Thus, the time-concentration curves of the O-sulfotyrosine level demonstrate the variation of kidney dysKI was < 147.40 ng/mL with a sensitivity and specificity of 80.90 and 70.00% respectively. In animal experiments, serum levels of O-sulfotyrosine in mice were elevated on Day 7 after 5/6 nephrectomy (14.89 ± 1.05 vs. 8.88 ± 2.62 ng/mL, P < 0.001) until Day 90 (32.65 ± 5.59 vs. 8.88 ± 2.62 ng/mL, P < 0.001).

Advances in biomedicine can substantially change human life. However, progress is not always followed by ethical reflection on its consequences or scientists' responsibility for their creations. The humanities can help health sciences students learn to critically analyse these issues; in particular, literature can aid discussions about ethical principles in biomedical research. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, the modern Prometheus (1818) is an example of a classic novel presenting complex scenarios that could be used to stimulate discussion.

Within the framework of the 200th anniversary of the novel, we searched PubMed to identify works that explore and discuss its value in teaching health sciences. One of the causes of dissatisfaction following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is abnormal knee kinematics. A newly designed bi-cruciate stabilized (BCS) TKA system has been developed to produce close-to-normal kinematics because of its anatomic tibiofemoral articular geometry and cam-post mechanism. Although BCS TKA is expected to improve patient satisfaction, no reports have described the appropriate technique or soft tissue handling required to achieve excellent satisfaction with BCS TKA. This study is to identify intraoperative surgical predictors of patient satisfaction after BCS TKA.

We studied 104 knees with primary varus knee osteoarthritis that underwent BCS TKA with a navigation system retrospectively. Surgical parameters including coronal, sagittal and axial alignment and joint laxity in each compartment that affected patient satisfaction was evaluated. Satisfaction score was evaluated with use of the 2011 Knee Society Scoring system. The multivariate regression analysis included age, gender, body mass index and intraoperative parameters that correlated with satisfaction scores in the univariate analysis (P < 0.05). The current study focused on the patient satisfaction score at 1 year postoperatively and didn't evaluate the long term clinical results nor survivorship.

The postoperative satisfaction score was 28.6 ± 8.1. Multivariate analysis showed that medial joint laxity at 30° flexion (P = 0.003), tibial excessive external rotation alignment (P = 0,009) and tibial varus alignment (P = 0.029) were predictors of poor satisfaction score.

When performing BCS TKA, surgeons should pay attention to maintaining proper stability of the medial compartment at mid flexion range and should avoid tibial varus and excessive external rotational alignment.
