Strategies highlighted include using berberine in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents either to reduce toxic side effects or enhance their anticancer effects; the various novel formulation approaches which by order of magnitude improved the pharmacokinetics of berberine; and semisynthetic approaches that enhanced potency by up to 100-fold.Background and objectives Although laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is effective for obesity management, postoperative vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency is of major concern. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the levels of B12 and its related functional biomarkers, namely, total homocysteine (tHcy), methylmalonic acid (MMA), folate, methylcitric acid (MCA), and hemoglobin (Hb), in one-year postoperative LSG patients and matched controls. Materials and Methods Plasma B12, tHcy, MMA, folate, and MCA were measured in matched controls (n = 66) and patients (n = 71) using validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry techniques and protocols in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Results The median B12 concentration in patients (177 pmol/L) was significantly lower (p less then 0.001) than in the controls (334.7 pmol/L). The tHcy and MMA levels were significantly increased (p less then 0.001 and p = 0.011, respectively) and folate levels were significantly decreased (p = 0.001) in the LSG patients compared to the controls. Interestingly, no significant difference in MCA levels were observed between the two groups. The levels of tHcy and MMA were concomitantly increased with the decreased folate levels in postoperative LSG patients when compared with the controls. The Hb levels were significantly lower in males and females in the patient group compared with those in the control group, respectively (p = 0.005 and p = 0.043). Conclusions This is the first report of serum levels of B12 and its functional biomarkers in postoperative LSG patients among a local population from the UAE. Our findings revealed significant alterations of the B12 biomarkers, total B12, MMA, and tHcy in one-year postoperative LSG patients. This study assessed the impact of an educational intervention on the knowledge, attitudes, and practice regarding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) of Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals, as well as on the types of T2DM care services which they were able to provide. The intervention was carried out in collaboration with county hospitals. The study was conducted from 2015 to 2016 among 241 health care professionals in 18 township health centers and 55 village clinics in three counties in Jiangsu Province, randomly divided into an intervention group and a control group. Participants in the intervention group received professional skills training sessions and team communication and were involved in regular meetings. ABT-199 clinical trial The control group followed the routine work plan. At one-year follow up, the diabetes knowledge score, practice score, and attitudes score were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group. A significantly higher proportion of health care professionals in the intervention group was able to provide services compared with the control group, for all types of services, except T2DM emergency treatment. The intervention among health care professionals in PHC had a positive impact on their professional diabetes skills, knowledge, attitudes, practices, and types of services they were able to provide, at one-year follow-up.The rapidly ascending trend of additive manufacturing techniques requires a tailoring of existing solidification models and the development of new numerical tools. User-friendly numerical models can be a valid aid in order to optimize operating parameter ranges with the scope to extend the modelling tools to already existing or innovative alloys. In this paper a modelling approach is described simulating the generation of single tracks on a powder bed system in a selective laser melting process. The approach we report attains track geometry as a function of alloy thermo-physical properties, laser speed and power, powder bed thickness. Aim of the research is to generate a numerical tool able to predict laser power and speed ranges in manufacturing porosity-free printed parts without lack of fusion and keyhole pores. The approach is based on a simplified description of the physical aspects. Main simplifications concern the laser energy input, the formation of the pool cavity, and the powder bed thermo-physical properties. The model has been adjusted based on literature data providing the track's geometry (width and depth) and relative density. Such data refer to different alloys. In particular, Ti6Al4V, Inconel625, Al7050, 316L and pure copper are considered. We show that the printing process presents features common to all alloys. This allows the model to predict the printing behavior of an alloy from its physical properties, avoiding the need to perform specific experimental activities. This paper presents the development of metallic thermoresistive thin film, providing an innovative solution to dynamically control the temperature during the injection molding process of polymeric parts. The general idea was to tailor the signal response of the nitrogen- and oxygen-doped titanium-copper thin film (TiCu(N,O))-based transducers, in order to optimize their use in temperature sensor devices. The results reveal that the nitrogen or oxygen doping level has an evident effect on the thermoresistive response of TiCu(N,O) films. The temperature coefficient of resistance values reached 2.29 × 10-2 °C-1, which was almost six times higher than the traditional platinum-based sensors. In order to demonstrate the sensing capabilities of thin films, a proof-of-concept experiment was carried out, integrating the developed TiCu(N,O) films with the best response in an injection steel mold, connected to a data acquisition system. These novel sensor inserts proved to be sensitive to the temperature evolution during the injection process, directly in contact with the polymer melt in the mold, demonstrating their possible use in real operation devices where temperature profiles are a major parameter, such as the injection molding process of polymeric parts.
