In the subsoil, SOC decomposition showed more resilience to warming when the diversity of soil bacteria (both whole community and major groups) and fungi was higher. Our results partly support the positive biodiversity-ecosystem stability hypothesis. Structural equation modeling further indicates that variations in Q10 in the subsoil were directly related to changes in microbial diversity and community composition, which were affected by soil pH. Collectively our results provide compelling evidence that microbial biodiversity plays an important role in stabilizing SOC decomposition in the subsoil of alpine montane ecosystems. Conservation of belowground biodiversity is therefore of great importance in maintaining the stability of ecosystem processes under climate change in high-elevation regions of the Tibetan Plateau.The currently recognized Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin occurs in estuaries and surrounding shallow waters from the South China Sea to the Asian coast of the Indian Ocean. However, a recent study suggested that the humpback dolphin from the Bay of Bengal may represent a distinct phylogenetic species. In this study, we sequenced 915-bp mtDNA segments from five geographic populations in both Chinese and Thai waters; together with previously published sequences, these data revealed that the ancestral Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin might have split during the transition from the Oligocene to Miocene (23.45 Mya, 95% HPD 16.65-26.55 Mya), and then dispersed along the Pacific and Indian Ocean coasts of Asia. Genetic differentiation was detected between most of the examined populations, except for only a few pairwise populations in the northern South China Sea. Genetic differentiation/distance between the humpback dolphins from the northern and southern South China Sea met the sub-species threshold value proposed for marine mammals, whereas that between the humpback dolphins in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean was above the species threshold. Bayesian inference of historic gene flow indicated low but constant northward gene flow along the Indian Ocean coast; however, there was a recent abrupt increase in gene flow in the Pacific region, likely due to the shortening coastline at the low stand of sea level. Our results revealed that the current taxonomic classification of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins may not reflect their phylogeography.A series of four heterocyclic dimers has been synthesized, with twisted geometries imposed across the central linking bond by ortho-alkoxy chains. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of hemodialysis to remove glutamate from the blood and to assess the behavior of this small molecule. Ten patients with end-renal disease on hemodialysis were included in the study. Glutamate clearance was evaluated within the first hour of hemodialysis on a midweek dialysis day on five patients who underwent low flux hemodialysis, whereas the other five patients underwent highly efficient hemodialysis (high flux hemodialysis on one day and online hemodiafiltration on another day). Glutamate clearance with hemodialysis was very effective and did not show any differences between the techniques (low flux 214 [55], high flux 204 [37], online hemodiafiltration 202 [16], median (interquartile range), P = .7). Glutamate clearance was almost equivalent to vascular access plasma flow and it was not affected by dialyzer permeability or ultrafiltration rate. After a hemodialysis session, a significant decrease in glutamate blood level was observed (prehemodialysis 59.7 [36.1], posthemodialysis 37.0 [49.2], P = .005). Dialysis performed under fasting condition showed higher glutamate reduction rate (60%) than that under feeding condition (20%). Hemodialysis may be an effective method to reduce glutamate blood levels, and the molecule clearance does not differ between the different techniques used. Considering previous results in experimental models, hemodialysis without hemodynamic stress, could be considered for reducing glutamate neurotoxic effects in acute ischemic strokes of patients in chronic hemodialysis programs.
Radiological and pathological studies in severe COVID-19 pneumonia (SARS-CoV-2) have demonstrated extensive pulmonary immunovascular thrombosis and infarction. This study investigated whether these focal changes may present with chest pain mimicking pulmonary emoblism (PE) in ambulant patients.
CTPAs from outpatients presenting with chest pain to Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust 1st March to 31 May 2020 (n=146) and 2019 (n=85) were compared. Regions of focal ground glass opacity (GGO), consolidation and/or atelectasis (parenchymal changes) were determined, and all scans were scored using British Society for Thoracic Imaging (BSTI) criteria for COVID-19, and the 2020 cohort was offered SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing.
Baseline demographic and clinical data were similar between groups with absence of fever, normal lymphocytes and marginally elevated CRP and D-Dimer values. Evidence of COVID-19 or parenchymal changes was observed in 32.9% (48/146) of cases in 2020 compared to 16.5% (14/85) in 2019 (P=0.007). 11/146 (7.
