To investigate and compare the effects of clinical and self-perceived oral conditions on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among young adults.
Adults enrolled in the 1982 Pelotas birth cohort were included in this study. OHRQoL was assessed by the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) instrument. Clinical parameters such as dental caries, periodontitis, aesthetics, and occlusal characteristics, and tongue coating were collected through clinical evaluation, while dental anxiety and halitosis were self-reported. Direct and indirect effects of clinical and self-perceived oral conditions on OHRQoL were assessed using structural equation modelling.
Five-hundred and thirty-nine individuals participated in this study. Dental caries (β=0.12) and periodontitis (β=0.11) were directly and indirectly (via halitosis, β=0.05 for periodontitis only) associated with greater OHIP-14 scores, while the other clinical conditions did not influence the OHIP-14 scores. Dental anxiety and halitosis were also associated with higher OHIP-14 scores (β=0.31 and β=0.27, respectively).
This study found a positive association between clinically diagnosed and self-reported oral conditions and OHRQoL; however, the self-reported conditions had a higher impact on OHRQoL.

We report a case of a 41-year-old woman with acral persistent papular mucinosis. She had a 5-year history of multiple, scattered, whitish papules, on the back of both hands, of 2-5 mm in diameter. Histopathological examination revealed a focal, fairly circumscribed area with sparse collagen fibers in the upper and middle dermis. The circumscribed area was positively stained with Alcian blue. The papules were clinically and histologically diagnosed as acral persistent papular mucinosis. Cisplatin concentration We also summarized 24 Japanese acral persistent papular mucinosis cases, including ours. Although acral persistent papular mucinosis occurs predominantly in women according to overseas reports, the male female ratio is 57 in Japan. It has been reported that tranilast (N-[3,4-dimethoxycinnamoyl]-anthranilic acid) was effective in two Japanese cases. In our case, the patient had been treated with tranilast for 2 months without improvement. Further studies are required to confirm the efficacy of tranilast for acral persistent papular mucinosis.Attempts to decrease socioeconomic health disparities face various challenges, which include ethical questions about prioritization and value-conflicts. To deal with these questions in a way that takes equal standing as a central value, this paper explores the potential of a relational egalitarian capability approach to local health equity policies. Especially for local health equity policies, a relational egalitarian capability approach seems promising as it offers more perspectives for action and evaluation additional to considerations of distributive justice. To scrutinize if this approach can offer an adequate normative basis for health equity policies and be a helpful ethical guide in practice, five desiderata are identified that a relational egalitarian capability approach to local health equity should fulfil. These desiderata stem from a consideration of political-ethical pluralism and scarcity of time and resources as non-ideal conditions characterizing public policy practice, as well as of three questions that any capability approach should answer to be applicable in practice. For each of the five desiderata, a brief outline is given of what relational egalitarian theories and the capability approach offer in response to the questions implied by these desiderata. Ultimately, these questions need to be answered in relation to specific policies in particular contexts.Visual information is of pivotal ecological importance to monkeys, apes, and humans, whereas its role in nocturnal primate ecology is less well understood. We explored how purely visual information modulates the behavior of a nocturnal primate. Abstract (shape), photographic (shape + detail), or video (shape + detail + motion) representations of arthropod prey (Zophobas morio; food context) or a male conspecific (social context) were systematically presented to 22 individuals of the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) using a touchscreen. We assessed stimulus-directed touch interactions, durations of focused visual attention towards the different stimuli, and durations spent in the half of the setup-chamber more distant to the touchscreen (as quantification of approach/avoidance). Focused attention towards the stimulus generally increased from abstract and photographic to videographic stimuli. For the food context, indications for a parallel increase in stimulus-directed touch interactions from abstract stiight into the evolution of visual information processing and cognition in nocturnal primates.
Rhinoviruses are the predominant cause of respiratory viral infections and are strongly associated with asthma exacerbations. While humoral immunity plays an important role during virus infections, cellular aspects of this response are less well understood. Here, we investigated the antiviral response of circulating B cells upon experimental rhinovirus infection in healthy individuals and asthma patients.
We purified B cells from experimentally infected healthy individuals and patients with asthma and subjected them to total RNA-sequencing. Rhinovirus-derived RNA was measured in isolated B cells using a highly sensitive PCR. B cells were stimulated with rhinovirus in vitro to further study gene expression, expression of antiviral proteins and B-cell differentiation in response rhinovirus stimulation. Protein expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to rhinovirus was assessed using a proximity extension assay.
B cells isolated from experimentally infected subjects exhibited an antiviral gene er respiratory viruses.
