Experimental dementia was induced in male rats by ICV-STZ on day-1 (D-1) of the experimental protocol at a sub-diabetogenic dose (3 mg/kg) twice at an interval of 48 h into both rat lateral ventricles. ICV-STZ caused cognitive decline in terms of increase in the escape latency on D-14 to D-17 and, decrease in the time spent and percentage of distance travelled in the target quadrant during Morris water maze and decrease in the spontaneous alteration behavior during Y-maze tests in rats. Further, ICV-STZ decreased the level of acetylcholine and activity of choline acetyltransferase and increased the activity of acetylcholinesterase in rat hippocampus, pre-frontal cortex and amygdala. Interestingly, ICV-STZ increased the mitochondrial calcium in addition to decrease in the mitochondrial function, integrity and bioenergetics in all rat brain regions. Further, ICV-STZ enhanced the levels of expression of NR1 subunit of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, mitochondrial calcium uniporter and sodium-calcium exchanger in these rat brain regions. Thus, NR1-dependent mitochondrial calcium accumulation could be considered as a major attribute to the animal model of ICV-STZ-induced AD-like manifestations. Further, drugs targeting to manage mitochondrial calcium homeostasis could best be studied in this animal model.

To identify the corporate political activity (CPA) of food industry actors in South Africa.

We studied the CPA of ten different food actors for the period Jan 2018-April 2019. We used a systematic approach and existing framework to collect and analyse information available in the public domain, including material from the industry, government, academia and civil society.

Food industry actors in South Africa established multiple relationships with various parties in and outside the South African government. These included interactions between large food companies and the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Sport & Recreation, the Department of Health, and the Department of Agriculture. In addition, the food industry-sponsored community programs, with a focus on poverty alleviation and undernutrition. Moreover, food industry actors influenced science were directly involved in policy-making and helped frame the debate on diet and public health in South Africa.

It is crucial that there is increased transparency, disclosure, and awareness of industry strategies, and that mechanisms to address and manage industry influence are strengthened in the country.

This paper empirically examines whether and how COVID-19 may be activating bias and discrimination toward individuals of Asian descent.

In March 2020, we used a national online survey to collect data from 1141 US residents. Using descriptive statistics and multivariate regression, we estimated the prevalence and COVID-19-related predictors of bias toward people of Asian descent.

We found over 40% of our sample reported they would engage in at least one discriminatory behavior toward people of Asian descent. Respondents who were fearful of COVID-19 (b = .09, p < 0.001) and had less accurate knowledge about the virus (b = - .07, p < 0.001) reported more negative attitudes toward Asians as did respondents with less trust in science (b = - .06, p < 0.001) and more trust in President Trump (b = .04, p < 0.001).

Public health leaders must confront fear of the virus, improve knowledge, and bolster trust in science as these factors may evoke negative attitudes toward Asians and increase prejudice and discrimination. Specifically, our findings warrant the adoption of public health campaigns that provide health information and build trust in scientific knowledge.

Both computations seem to rely on the hippocampus proper, but they also seem to be instantiated by distinct hippocampal subfields. link2 Thus, we investigated whether individual differences in behavioral expressions of pattern separation and pattern completion were correlated after accounting for general mnemonic ability. Young adult participants learned events comprised of a scene-animal-object triad. In the pattern separation task, we estimated mnemonic discrimination using lure classification for events that contained a similar lure element. In the pattern completion task, we estimated holistic recollection using dependency in retrieval success for different associations from the same event. Our results indicated that MDA content of the two inbred lines increased significantly under heat stress; the values of MDA in L9K was significantly higher than that in HZS. The level of SOD, CAT, and POD enzyme activities in HZS was higher than those in L9K for both the heat-treated group and controls. The values of Fv/Fm, qP, and ФPSII reduced by heat stress in L9K were higher than the respective values in HZS. RNA-seq data showed that heat stress induced more heat stress-related genes in HZS (257 heat stress-related genes) than in L9K (224 heat stress-related genes). GO and KEGG enrichment analyses indicated that HZS and L9K changed their physiological and biochemical mechanisms in response to heat stress through different molecular mechanisms.
