Here, ultrahigh vacuum based preparation methods and surface science characterization techniques are used with gas chromatography to demonstrate that subtle changes in the preparation of well-oriented Cu(100) and Cu(111) single-crystal surfaces drastically affect their CO2 RR selectivity. Copper single crystals with clean, flat, and atomically ordered surfaces are predicted to yield hydrocarbons; however, these were found experimentally to favor the production of H2 . Only when roughness and defects are introduced, for example by electrochemical etching or a plasma treatment, are significant amounts of hydrocarbons generated. These results show that structural and morphological effects are the key factors determining the catalytic selectivity of CO2 RR.Nature-based solutions (NBS) can be used in combination with the reopening of piped rivers to support area development. In certain cases, piped rivers can run through disused landfills. This presents a complicating factor because landfills provide the possibility for river water to be contaminated by waste. In Skien municipality, close to Oslo, Norway, NBS are being considered as part of a potential reopening of the Kjørbekk stream. A 4-km stretch of the stream is contained in an aging pipe infrastructure that is buried under two disused landfills. The pipe infrastructure does not have the physical capacity to cope with an increase in precipitation brought about by current climate change, and in certain areas, the pipe has started to leak. This means that surface water runoff that cannot be accommodated by the pipe, as well as water that leaks from the pipe, can become contaminated by the waste in the disused landfill. Furthermore, the water can be transported with the stream course to the final recipient, taking the contamination with it. Reopening the stream and providing new water pathways can alleviate these problems, but it must be carried out so that contamination is not allowed to spread. This case study reveals how certain NBS that focus on reducing the amount of water in contact with pollutants, reducing the amount of particle spreading, remediating contaminated water, and remediating contaminated soil could be implemented at the site and function as a catalyst for an incremental city development. To describe the development, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of a seven-module e-learning for enhancing cultural competence of public health workers.

The study was based on the framework of the new Medical Research Council; a mixed methods design was used.

A four-week pilot cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted with 39 public health workers and 74 migrants in South Korea. Feasibility and preliminary efficacy were assessed according to initiation, retention, adherence, usability, acceptability, individual and organizational cultural competence, and migrant trust and satisfaction. Quantitative data were collected at baseline, 4weeks, and 12weeks. Focus group interviews were conducted with eight public health workers at 12weeks.

Initiation, retention, and adherence rates were high. Participants agreed on acceptability, but exhibited mixed results on usability. Participants were satisfied with "well-structured content," "authentic case stories and videos," "increased interest in migrant care," and "opportunity for self-reflection." However, "flawless and trouble-free system," "screen design for easy navigation," "instructor's expertise," and "more situational cases and videos" were desired. Statistically significant differences were observed for individual cultural competence, migrant trust, and satisfaction.

Generally, the intervention seems feasible and has preliminary efficacy, yet usability improvement is necessary for full-scale randomized controlled trials.

Evidence shows that artificial micro/nanotopography can better mimic the environment for neuronal growth in vivo. However, the potential mechanisms by which neurons interact with true three dimensional (3D) topographical cues and form directional networks are unclear. Herein, 3D micropillar scaffolds are designed to guide the growth of neural stem cells and hippocampal neurons in vitro. Discontinuous and anisotropic micropillars are fabricated by femtosecond direct laser writing to form patterned scaffolds with various spacings and heights, which are found to affect the branching and orientation of axons and dendrites. Interestingly, axons and dendrites tend to grow on an array of 3D micropillar scaffolds of the same height and form functionally connected neuronal networks, as reflected by synchronous neuronal activity visualized by calcium imaging. This method may represent a promising tool for studying neuron behavior and directed neuronal networks in a 3D environment.During the last 5 years, data and guidance to support ecological risk assessment of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substance (PFAS) have become increasingly available. The studies presented in this special series exemplify and advance this progress. Among the highlights are a whole-colony honey bee toxicity study, a critical evaluation of contrasting evidence to understand avian toxicity of PFAS, a bioaccumulation model incorporating PFOS precursor transformation, and an assessment of PFAS monitoring and regulatory needs on the African continent. This foreword closes with a summary of research needs identified from the special series. Integr Environ Assess Manag 2021;17670-672. © 2021 SETAC.

A new diagnosis of pediatric cancer may disrupt family functioning. The current study aimed to describe changes in family rules and routines during the first year of pediatric cancer treatment, and to explore associations with demographics, illness factors, and caregiver distress.

This exploratory mixed-methods, cross-sectional study examined 44 primary caregivers of youth in treatment for a new cancer diagnosis in 2019 and 2020, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Caregivers completed validated questionnaires assessing demographic and child illness characteristics, psychosocial distress, and cancer-related stressors, and participated in a semi-structured interview about family rules and routines.

Caregivers reported changes in bedtime, mealtime, and school routines, relaxed behavioral expectations and rules around screen time, and new rules and routines around treatment, medications, and infection control. Caregivers with elevated levels of psychosocial distress reported more changed routines thr study given that accommodating parenting strategies have been associated with adverse short- and long-term child health and behavior outcomes.

Prophylactic replacement therapy (prophylaxis) in patients with haemophilia (PWH) requires lifelong, frequent (self)infusions. Prophylaxis effectiveness depends on adherence, and the drivers of treatment adherence among PWH are unclear.

To quantify prophylaxis adherence and associations between adherence and patients' treatment attitudes and satisfaction in a large cohort of children and adults with haemophilia.

In a nationwide, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study, PWH with complete information currently using prophylaxis were selected. Validated Hemophilia Regimen Treatment Adherence Scale-Prophylaxis (VERITAS-Pro; normalised score range 0-100, optimum 0) measured treatment adherence; the Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13; total score range 0-100, optimum 100) measured activation of self-management; Hemophilia Patient Satisfaction Scale (Hemo-Sat; range 0-100, optimum 0) measured treatment satisfaction. Prostaglandin E2 price Groups were compared according to age (children <12years; adolescents 12-18years; adults >18years) and adherence levels using non-parametric tests, and correlations were assessed using Spearman's rho.

Among 321 participants (median age 33years, interquartile range [IQR]15-54years), adherence was high (median VERITAS-Pro total score 17, 89% adherent) but worsened with age, with median scores of 5, 14 and 20 in children, adolescents, adults, respectively (p<.001). Attitudes towards treatment (median 66 vs. 68) participants and treatment satisfaction (12 vs. 10) were similar between adherent and non-adherent patients. The VERITAS-Pro total score was moderately correlated with PAM-13 (r=.41) but not with Hemo-Sat (r=-.11).

Prophylaxis adherence was high (89%) but decreased significantly with age and was not correlated with treatment attitude or treatment satisfaction.

Several designs have been proposed to improve its ability to mimic the native tissue and establish it as a reliable research platform. However, despite mimicking one of most vascularized organs, reliable strategies to deliver oxygen and substrates to densely packed constructs of metabolically demanding cells remain unsettled. Herein, we describe a new heart-on-chip platform with precise fluid control, integrating an on-chip peristaltic pump, allowing automated and fine control over flow on channels flanking a 3D cardiac culture. The application of distinct flow rates impacted on temporal dynamics of microtissue structural and transcriptional maturation, improving functional performance. Moreover, a widespread transcriptional response was observed, suggesting flow-mediated activation of critical pathways of cardiomyocyte structural and functional maturation and inhibition of cardiomyocyte hypoxic injury. In conclusion, the present design represents an important advance in bringing engineered cardiac microtissues closer to the native heart, overcoming traditional bulky off-chip fluid handling systems, improving microtissue performance, and matching oxygen and energy substrate requirements of metabolically active constructs, avoiding cellular hypoxia. Distinct flow patterns differently impact on microtissue performance and gene expression program.

We sought to evaluate whether the cutaneous silent period (CSP) could be an electrophysiological indicator reflective of the effects of therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD), including anti-PD medications or deep brain stimulation (DBS).

We recorded the CSP in 43 patients with PD prior to and following the administration of medication during a pre-DBS evaluation (30 cases) and the "on" and "off" states of subthalamic nucleus DBS (13 cases). The CSP was elicited from the abductor pollicis brevis muscle by an electrical stimulation of the index finger that was 2, 4, and 15 times stronger than the sensory threshold (ST). We measured changes in latencies, including the onset, duration, and end of CSP, and waveform scores from 0 to 3. The correlation between the CSP score and unified PD rating score part III (UPDRS-III) also was assessed.

The onset latency and duration of CSP were significantly different between high (15ST) and low-strength stimulations (2ST and 4ST). However, there were no significant latency changes (onset, duration, end of CSP) before and after receiving medication, or during the on and off state of the DBS.
