Early diagnosis and timely treatment are of great importance to produce favorable outcome. Although currently available diagnostic techniques, e.g., chest radiography, ultrasonography, and CT, can accurately detect hemothorax, delayed hemothorax cannot be identified early because these examinations are often performed on patients until noticeable symptoms manifest. Therefore, for early detection of delayed hemothorax, real-time monitoring by means of a portable and noninvasive imaging technique is needed. In this study, we employed electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to detect the onset of hemothorax in real time on eight piglet hemothorax models. The models were established by injection of 60 ml fresh autologous blood into the pleural cavity, and the subsequent development of hemothorax was monitored continuously. The results showed that EIT was able to sensitively detect hemothorax as small as 10 ml in volume, as well as its location. Also, the development of hemothorax over a range of 10 ml up to 60 ml was well monitored in real time, with a favorable linear relationship between the impedance change in EIT images and the volume of blood injected. These findings demonstrated that EIT has a unique potential for early diagnosis and continuous monitoring of hemothorax in clinical practice, providing medical staff valuable information for prompt identification and treatment of delayed hemothorax. Our experiments were conducted on 36 fresh osteochondral sections from the tibia plateau of slaughtered 6-month-old pigs, where the thickness of the cartilage is similar to that of human wrist cartilage. An area of 1 cm2 was first treated with emery paper to simulate the chondromalacic cartilage. Then, the treatment with RFE followed in 6 different patterns. The osteochondral sections were assessed for cellular viability (live/dead assay, caspase (cell apoptosis marker) staining, and quantitative analysed images obtained by fluorescent microscopy). For a quantitative characterization of none or treated cartilage surfaces, various roughness parameters were measured using confocal laser scanning microscopy (Olympus LEXT OLS 4000 3D). To describe the roughness, the Root-Mean-Square parameter (Sq) was calculated. A smoothing effect of the cartilage surface was detectable upon each pattern of RFE treatment. The Sq for native cartilage was Sq = 3.8 ± 1.1 μm. The best smoothing pattern was seen for two RFE passes and a 2-second pulsed mode (B2p2) with an Sq = 27.3 ± 4.9 μm. However, with increased smoothing, an augmentation in chondrocyte death up to 95% was detected. Using bipolar RFE treatment in arthroscopy for small joints like the wrist or MCP joints should be used with caution. In the case of chondroplasty, there is a high chance to destroy the joint cartilage. Aims To investigate the adherence rate of Tunisian pulmonologists to the 2017-GOLD PTGs and to identify the barriers to their adherence. read more Methods This was a cohort study involving clinically stable COPD patients who presented to a pulmonology outpatient consultation. The patients were classified as having been appropriately and inappropriately (over- or undertreatment) treated for the GOLD group. Logistic regression was performed to determine the adherence barriers to the 2017-GOLD PTGs. Results A total of 296 patients were included (88.1% males, mean age 68 ± 10 years; GOLD A (7.1%), B (36.1%), C (4.1%), and D (52.7%)). The pulmonologists' adherence rate to the 2017-GOLD PTGs was 29.7%. There was a significant statistical difference between the adherence rates among the four GOLD groups (A 19.0%, B 20.6%, C 8.3%, and D 39.1%; p = 0.001). Differences were statistically significant between the GOLD group D and groups B (p = 0.001). Differences were statistically significant between the GOLD group D and groups B (p = 0.001). Differences were statistically significant between the GOLD group D and groups B (. Conclusion The adherence rate of Tunisian pulmonologists to the 2017-GOLD PTGs is low. It seems that the patients' age, socioeconomic level, national health insurance coverage, and GOLD groups influenced their adherence. The color changes from the natural accepted golden color to unfavorable dark brown color during storage. In this study, the effect of different color preservation methods (modified atmosphere packaging, cold storage (4°C), sulfur dioxide gas (SO2), and blanching) and its relation to darkening due to action of the browning enzymes and melanin production were investigated. Polyphenol oxidase was shown to be active in all treatments except the samples treated with SO2 gas and steam blanching for ten minutes. Likewise, peroxidase activity showed a similar trend in all samples, but a decrease in activity was observed in sulfated samples and total inactivation in steam blanching for ten minutes. Moreover, sulfated samples have shown improvement in color compared to all other treatments, whereas the steamed samples showed the highest color deterioration. Concurrently, melanin content increased in all samples over the period of storage except in the sulfated samples. FTIR analyses of dates' melanin have revealed similar structural feature to the reference melanin; however, some differences were noticed in the regions 2850-2950 cm-1 and 1690-1705 cm-1 which indicated major structural difference between the two melanin samples. More work is suggested to reveal structural and functional properties of dates' melanin. Copyright © 2020 Mariam Al-Amrani et al.
