The Mediterranean diet is associated with health benefits due to bioactive compounds such as polyphenols. The biological activities of three polyphenols (quercetin (QCT), resveratrol (RSV), apigenin (API)) were evaluated in mouse neuronal N2a cells in the presence of 7-ketocholesterol (7KC), a major cholesterol oxidation product increased in patients with age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. In N2a cells, 7KC (50 µM; 48 h) induces cytotoxic effects characterized by an induction of cell death. MSC-4381 When associated with RSV, QCT and API (3.125; 6.25 µM), 7KC-induced toxicity was reduced. The ability of QCT, RSV and API to prevent 7KC-induced oxidative stress was characterized by a decrease in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in whole cells and at the mitochondrial level; by an attenuation of the increase in the level and activity of catalase; by attenuating the decrease in the expression, level and activity of glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1); by normalizing the expression, level and aroteins involved in peroxisomal β-oxidation, was also attenuated by RSV, QCT and API. 7KC-induced cell death, which has characteristics of apoptosis (cells with fragmented and/or condensed nuclei; cleaved caspase-3; Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) fragmentation) and autophagy (cells with monodansyl cadaverine positive vacuoles; activation of microtubule associated protein 1 light chain 3-I (LC3-I) to LC3-II, was also strongly attenuated by RSV, QCT and API. Thus, in N2a cells, 7KC induces a mode of cell death by oxiapoptophagy, including criteria of OXIdative stress, APOPTOsis and autoPHAGY, associated with mitochondrial and peroxisomal dysfunction, which is counteracted by RSV, QCT, and API reinforcing the interest for these polyphenols in prevention of diseases associated with increased 7KC levels. The evolution of microelectronics increased the information acquired by today's biomedical sensor systems to an extent where the capacity of low-power communication interfaces becomes one of the central bottlenecks. Hence, this paper mathematically analyzes and experimentally verifies novel coil and transceiver topologies for near-field communication interfaces, which simultaneously allow for high data transfer rates, low power consumption, and reduced interference to nearby wireless power transfer interfaces. Data coil design is focused on presenting two particular topologies which provide sufficient coupling between a reader and a wireless sensor system, but do not couple to an energy coil situated on the same substrate, severely reducing interference between wireless data and energy transfer interfaces. A novel transceiver design combines the approaches of a minimalistic analog front-end with a fully digital single-bit sampling demodulator, in which rectangular binary signals are processed by simple digital circuits instead of sinusoidal signals being conditioned by complex analog mixers and subsequent multi-bit analog-to-digital converters. The concepts are implemented using an analog interface in discrete circuit technology and a commercial low-power field-programmable gate array, yielding a transceiver which supports data rates of up to 6.78 MBit/s with an energy consumption of just 646 pJ/bit in transmitting mode and of 364 pJ/bit in receiving mode at a bit error rate of 2×10-7, being 10 times more energy efficient than any commercial NFC interface and fully implementable without any custom CMOS technology. The serotonin transporter (5-HTT in humans, SERT in rodents) is the main regulator of serotonergic transmission in the brain. The short allelic variant of the 5-HTT gene is in humans associated with psychopathologies and may enhance the vulnerability to develop depression after exposure to stressful events. Interestingly, the short allele also increases the sensitivity to a positive environment, which may buffer the vulnerability to depression. Since this polymorphism does not exist in rodents, male SERT knockout (SERT-/-) rats were tested to explore the molecular mechanisms based on this increased predisposition. This article investigates the influences of a positive manipulation, namely, enriched environment (EE), on the depressive-like behavior observed in SERT-/- rats. We found that one month of EE exposure normalized the anhedonic and anxious-like phenotype characteristics of this animal model. Moreover, we observed that EE exposure also restored the molecular alterations in the prefrontal cortex by positively modulating the expression of the neurotrophin Bdnf, and of spines and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic markers. Overall, our data confirm the depression-like phenotype of SERT-/- rats and highlight the ability of EE to restore behavioral and molecular alterations, thus promoting the opportunity to use EE as a supporting non-pharmacological approach to treat mood disorders. The imagery of airborne highly squinted synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with curved trajectory is a challenging task due to the translational-variant range cell migration (RCM) and azimuth modulation. However, in most cases of practical application, the curved trajectory cannot be accurately known, which brings greater difficulties to the imaging problem. To accommodate these issues, we propose a novel motion modelling and optimisation based imaging algorithm for the highly squinted SAR with unknown curved trajectory. First, to correct the translational-variant RCM, a coarse-to-fine RCM correction scheme as well as a range perturbation approach is applied. Afterwards, an optimisation model of motion information under the criterion of minimum entropy is built during the azimuth processing by nonlinear chirp scaling (NLCS). Correspondingly, a differential evolution (DE) optimisation strategy is proposed to estimate the motion information in an iterative manner. We empirically compare the proposed algorithms with several state-of-the-art highly squinted curved SAR imaging algorithms. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in the case without any prior information of the curved trajectory. The quality and yields of strawberry plants are seriously affected by abiotic stress every year. NAC (NAM, ATAF, CUC) transcription factors are plant-specific, having various functions in plant development and response to stress. In our study, FaNAC2 from strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa, cultivar "Benihoppe") was isolated and found to be a member of the ATAF sub-family, belonging to the NAC family of transcription factors. FaNAC2 was strongly expressed in the shoot apical meristem and older leaves of strawberries, and was induced by cold, high salinity, and drought stress. To investigate how FaNAC2 functions in plant responses to abiotic stress, transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana plants ectopically overexpressing FaNAC2 were generated. The transgenic plants grew better under salt and cold stress, and, during simulated drought treatment, these transgenic lines not only grew better, but also showed higher seed germination rates than wild-type plants. Gene expression analysis revealed that key genes in proline biosynthesis pathways were up-regulated in FaNAC2 overexpression lines, while its catabolic pathway genes were down-regulated and proline was accumulated more with the overexpression of FaNAC2 after stress treatments.
