Long-term outcomes of children with and without cleft palate receiving early treatment for otitis media with effusion (OME) are unclear.

To compare long-term otological and audiological outcomes between children with and without cleft palate treated with tympanostomy for OME before the age of 2 years.

Ninety-five children (180 ears) with cleft palate (study group) and 97 children (185 ears) without (control group) were followed-up to a maximum age of 7 years. We retrospectively analyzed the audiological outcomes at the age of 7 years, and the otological outcomes at the last examination.

The percentages of children with OME resolution before the age of 7 years were 47.4% and 60% in the study and control groups, respectively, and those of ears with healed tympanic membrane were 71.7% and 79.5% in the corresponding groups. Significantly more ears were subjected to retympanostomy in the study (31.1%) than in the control group (21.6%). Mean pure-tone average (0.5‒4 kHz) was 15.6 dB HL and 14.3 dB HL for the corresponding groups.

Otological and audiological outcomes in both groups were similar. The audiological prognosis was favorable regardless of the cleft palate condition.

Maintenance of gene variation enables populations to adapt more quickly to environmental changes. The geographical gaps also influence the distribution and evolutionary history of many mountain frogs in the world. Hence, a sound knowledge in population genetic structure of a species will help understand its population dynamics and develop conservation strategies. In the context of facing threats to the amphibian fauna of Western Ghats due to habitat loss, we used both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to investigate the genetic structure of an endemic frog species of the Western Ghats (Indirana semipalmata) with restricted distribution. The present study showed the importance of mountain gaps in shaping the species' structuring in the Western Ghats. Though a high genetic diversity was observed for the species when considering a single unit in the southern Western Ghats, the restricted gene flow on/between either side of the Shencottah gap with genetic clustering of the sampled populations may warrant a unique management plan for the species. The habitat fragmentation of the Western Ghats through anthropogenic activities may result in severe setbacks to the survival of the species in the future.

Despite high rates of bilateral hearing aid fitting globally, a number of adults continue to reject one hearing aid. The current study aimed to identify a clinically suitable tool for determining, pre-fitting, which clients might prefer one hearing aid.

Performance was assessed on a modified version of the Listening in Spatialised Noise - Sentences test (LiSN-S), the Dichotic Digits difference Test, the Experiential Hearing Aid simulator, and the Grooved Pegboard Test. We considered 156 metabolomic traits individually and jointly as principal components explaining 95% of the variance in the nuclear magnetic resonance platform and assessed whether the principal components for the metabolic traits added to the proportion of the association explained by putative cardiovascular risk factors (systolic and diastolic blood pressures, insulin, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and glucose). A 1 kg/m2 higher BMI was associated with a 0.70 g/m2.7 (95% CI, 0.53-0.88 g/m2.7) and 0.66 g/m2.7 (95% CI, 0.53-0.79 g/m2.7) higher LVMI in males (n=437) and females (n=536), respectively. Putative risk factors explained 3% (95% CI, 2%-5%) of this association in males, increasing to 10% (95% CI, 8%-13%) when including metabolic principal components. In females, the standard risk factors explained 3% (95% CI, 2%-5%) of the association and did not increase when including the metabolic principal components. Conclusions The addition of the nuclear magnetic resonance-measured metabolic traits appears to mediate more of the association of BMI on LVMI than the putative risk factors alone in adolescent males, but not females.
