Information on long-term dietary intake is often required for research or program planning, but surveys routinely use short-term assessments such as 24-h recalls (24HRs). Methods to reduce the impact of within-person variation in 24HRs, such as the National Cancer Institute (NCI) method, typically require extensive training and skill.
We introduce the Simulating Intake of Micronutrients for Policy Learning and Engagement (SIMPLE) macro, a new tool to increase the accessibility of 24HR analysis. We explain the underlying theory behind the tool and provide examples of potential applications.
The SIMPLE macro connects the core NCI statistical code to estimate usual intake distributions and includes additional code to enable advanced analyses such as predictive modeling. The related SIMPLE-Iron macro applies the full probability method to estimate inadequate iron intake, and the SIMPLE-1D macro is used for descriptive or modeling analyses of data with a single 24HR per person. The macros and associated docuitate the analysis and modeling of dietary data to inform nutrition research, programs, and policy.
Few cohort studies have modelled replacements of red meat with other sources of protein on subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes using dietary changes.
To determine whether replacing red meat with other food sources of protein is associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.
We used data from the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health cohort (n=39,437) of middle-aged (55-72 years old) men and women who underwent 2 dietary assessments roughly 5 years apart to investigate dietary changes. The pseudo-observation method was used to model the average exposure effect of decreasing the intake of red meat while increasing the intake of either poultry, fish, eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese, whole grains, or refined grains on the subsequent 10-year risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared with no changes in the intakes of these foods.
Replacing 1 serving/day (100g/day) of red meat with 1 serving/day of eggs [risk difference (RD), -2.7%; 95% CI -4.0 to -1.1%; serving size 50 g/day], milk (RD, -1.2%; 95% CI -2.1 to -0.4%milk, yogurt, whole grains, or refined grains was also associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.As day-neutral woody perennial plants, the flowering time of roses (Rosa spp.) is assumed to be independent of the photoperiodic conditions; however, light responses of rose plants are not well understood. Chinese rose (Rosa chinensis) plants were grown under two light intensities (low light (LL), 92 μmol·m-2·s-1; or high light (HL), 278 μmol·m-2·s-1), and either with or without an end-of-day far-red (EOD-FR) treatment. Flowering was significantly delayed in the LL condition compared with the HL, but was not affected by EOD-FR treatment. The time until flowering positively corresponded with the mRNA and protein levels of Phytochrome-interacting factors (RcPIFs). The heterologous expression of RcPIF1, RcPIF3 or RcPIF4 in the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) pifq quadruple mutant partially rescued the mutant's shorter hypocotyl length. Simultaneous silencing of three RcPIFs in Rosa chinensis accelerated flowering under both LL and HL, with a more robust effect in LL, establishing RcPIFs as flowering suppressors in response to light intensity. The RcPIFs interacted with the transcription factor CONSTANS (RcCO) to form a RcPIFs-RcCO complex, which interfered with the binding of RcCO to the promoter of FLOWERING LOCUS T (RcFT), thereby inhibiting its expression. Furthermore, this inhibition was enhanced when RcPIFs were stabilized by LL, leading to delayed flowering under LL compared to HL. Our results not only revealed another layer of PIF functioning in the flowering of woody perennial plants, but also established a mechanism of light response in day-neutral plants.
Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a widely used treatment for hematologic cancers, with survival rates ranging from 25-78%. Known risk factors for chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), a serious and common long-term complication, disease relapse, and mortality following HCT have been identified, but much of the variability in HCT outcomes is unexplained. Biobehavioral symptoms including depression, sleep disruption, and fatigue are some of the most prevalent and distressing for patients; yet research on biobehavioral risk factors for HCT outcomes is limited. This study evaluated patient-reported depression, sleep disruption, and fatigue as risk factors for cGVHD, disease relapse, and mortality.
241 adults receiving allogeneic HCT for a hematologic malignancy completed self-report measures of depression symptoms, sleep quality, and fatigue (severity, interference) pre-HCT and 100 days post-HCT. Clinical outcomes were monitored for up to 6 years.

Parent-child reminiscing about past painful experiences is an untapped opportunity to process pain-related distress and, similar to reminiscing about other distressing experiences, promotes children's broader development. Previous research has documented the role of parent-child reminiscing about past pain in children's pain-related cognitions (i.e., memories for pain), but no study to date has examined the association between parent-child reminiscing about past painful experiences and children's broader cognitive skills. Design and Methods One hundred and ten typically developing four-year-old children and one of their parents reminisced about a past painful autobiographical event. Children then completed two tasks from the NIH Toolbox Cognitive Battery, the Flanker Inhibitory Control & Attention Test and the Picture Sequence Memory Test, to measure their executive function and episodic memory, respectively. Results Results indicated that the relation between parental reminiscing style and children's executive function was moderated by child sex, such that less frequent parental use of yes-no repetition questions was associated with boys' but not girls', greater performance on the executive function task. Children displayed greater episodic memory performance when their parents reminisced using more explanations. Conclusions The current study demonstrates the key role of parent-child reminiscing about pain in children's broader development and supports the merging of developmental and pediatric psychology fields. Future longitudinal research should examine the directionality of the relation between parent-child reminiscing about past pain and children's developmental outcomes.
Functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) is a sequel of left ventricular (LV) remodelling in heart failure patients. Relocation of both papillary muscles aims to specifically address mitral leaflet tethering to improve long-term durability of modern FMR repair. Nevertheless, the prognostic impact of the underlying cardiomyopathy on the outcome after FMR repair is unknown.
We analysed 84 consecutive heart failure patients with severe FMR, LV ejection fraction <40%, LV end-diastolic diameter ≥55 mm and tenting height >10 mm, who underwent ring annuloplasty and simultaneous bilateral papillary muscles relocation between June 2016 and March 2019. One-year outcome of 54 patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy ('ICM group') was prospectively compared to the remaining 30 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy ('DCM group').
One-year survival was similar in both groups (96% in the 'ICM group' vs 97% in the 'DCM group'; P = 0.93). Furthermore, primary composite outcome (i.e. freedom from death or mitral regurgitd DCM. DCM patients showed similar improvement in heart failure symptoms and LV re-remodelling compared to ICM patients. Subannular repair is developing towards a valid therapeutic option in heart failure patients presenting with severe FMR.
It is unknown whether faster progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in men than in women relates to differences in ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) levels.
We prospectively evaluated 906 hypertensive CKD patients (553 men) regularly followed in renal clinics to compare men versus women in terms of ABP control [daytime <135/85 and nighttime blood pressure (BP) <120/70 mmHg] and risk of all-cause mortality and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).
Age, estimated glomerular filtration rate and use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors were similar in men and women, while proteinuria was lower in women [0.30 g/24 h interquartile range (IQR) 0.10-1.00 versus 0.42 g/24 h, IQR 0.10-1.28, P = 0.025]. No sex-difference was detected in office BP levels; conversely, daytime and nighttime BP were higher in men (134 ± 17/78 ± 11 and 127 ± 19/70 ± 11 mmHg) than in women (131 ± 16/75 ± 11, P = 0.005/P < 0.001 and 123 ± 20/67 ± 12, P = 0.006/P < 0.001), with ABP goal achieved more frequently in women (39.1% men.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling condition characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. A subset of individuals have severe, treatment-resistant illness and are nonresponsive to medication or behavioral therapies. Without response to conventional therapeutic options, surgical intervention becomes an appropriate consideration.
To report clinical outcomes and the safety profile of bilateral ventral anterior capsulotomy for OCD using magnetic resonance (MR)-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) in 10 patients followed for 6 to 24 mo.
A total of 10 patients underwent LITT for severe OCD; 1 patient withdrew prior to follow-up. LITT is a minimally invasive ablative technique performed with precise targeting and use of thermography under MR guidance. Stattic Lesions of the ventral anterior limb of the internal capsule by other techniques have been shown to be efficacious in prior studies.
A total of 7 of the 9 patients were considered full responders (77.8%; Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale change≥35%). Adverse effects included transient apathy/amotivation postsurgery (2 patients). One patient had a small tract hemorrhage where the laser fiber traversed the cerebral cortex as well as persistent insomnia postsurgery. One individual died after a drug overdose 7 mo postsurgery, which was judged unrelated to the surgery.

Current literature examining the prospective relation of circulating omega-3 (n-3) and omega-6 (n-6) PUFAs and atrial fibrillation (AF) is limited to predominantly white populations.
We investigated the association of circulating n-3 and n-6 PUFAs with incident AF in participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.
A total of 6229 participants (mean age=62 y; 53% female; 39% white, 27% black, 22% Hispanic, and 12% Chinese) who were free of baseline AF and with plasma phospholipid PUFAs measured at baseline using GC were prospectively followed for the development of AF. Incident AF was ascertained using International Classification of Diseases-9 codes from hospital discharge records and Medicare claims data with follow-up through 2014. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was performed to determine the risk of incident AF.
During a median follow-up of 12.9 y, 813 (13%) participants developed AF. Each higher SD increment in arachidonic acid (AA; 204n-6) concentrations was associated with an 11% decreased risk of incident AF (HR 0.
