A finite element model of the foot-ankle-shank complex was reconstructed from magnetic resonance and computed tomography images of a 63-year-old normal female. The model was validated by comparing modeled stresses to the measured plantar pressure distribution of the model participant during balanced standing. The midstance and push-off instants of walking stance were simulated with different levels and combinations of gastrocnemius-soleus recession resembled by different amounts of muscle forces. Halving the muscle forces at midstance reduced the average plantar fascia stress by a quarter while reducing two-third of the muscle forces at push-off reduced the average fascia stress by 18.2%. While the first ray of the plantar fascia experienced the largest stress among the five fasciae, the stress was reduced by 77.8% and 16.9% when the load was halved and reduced by two-third at midstance and push-off instants, respectively. Reduction in fascia stress implicates a lower risk of plantar fasciitis and other midfoot-forefoot overload syndromes. The outcome of this study can aid physicians to determine the amount of gastrocnemius-soleus recession towards patients with vdifferent levels of plantar fascia overstress. A detailed three-dimensional modelling on the plantar fascia is warranted in future study.

Traumatic amputation of the ear constitutes a great aesthetic deformity that can have a tremendous negative impact. Reports describing the survival of near-complete ear amputation using non-microsurgical replantation are scarce. We aimed to study the surgical outcome of patients with near-complete ear amputations supplied by small pedicle bridges that were treated with primary reattachment.

We retrospectively studied patients with near-complete ear amputation who were admitted at Al Ain Hospital from January 2016 to December 2019.

Five patients were studied. The most common mechanism of injury was motor vehicle injury, followed by cutting injury. The skin pedicle was inferior in 3 (60%) patients of patients. The median width of the skin pedicles was 8.5 mm. The median interval between the injury and the surgical management was 4 hours. find protocol All patients underwent primary reattachment of the ear without microsurgery. A considerable number of cases in the head and neck have been reported but not in the hypopharynx. We describe a 31-year-old man with an incidental finding of a hypopharyngeal mass. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a fleshy mass 2 × 2 cm2 originating from the left hypopharynx and overlying the epiglottis. Computed tomography scan demonstrated a soft tissue mass in the left wall of the oropharynx measuring about 2.2 × 1.8 cm2, projecting into the hypopharyngeal air space. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a significant thickening of the left hypopharyngeal wall forming a mass lesion occupying the left pyriform sinus and abutting the left aryepiglottic fold. Histopathology indicated that tumor cells were polygonal and epithelioid, with abundant eosinophilic to clear flocculent cytoplasm, eccentric nuclei, and prominent nucleoli. The tumor was positive for smooth muscle actin with rare cells staining for Human Melanoma Black (HMB45). Fluorescence in situ hybridization for transcription factor E3 was also performed and supported the above diagnosis. Our study reports the first case of ASPS in the hypopharynx.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults. The aim of this study is to examine and discuss the state-of-the-art literature which uses neuroscience methods in the context of driving simulation to study adolescent and young adult drivers.

We conducted a systematic English-language literature search of Ovid MEDLINE (1946-2020), PsycINFO (1967-2020), PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and CINAHL using keywords and MeSH terms. Studies were excluded if participants were not within the ages of 15-25, if the driving simulator did not include a visual monitor/computer monitor/projection screen and steering wheel and foot pedals, or brain data (specifically EEG [electroencephalogram], fNIRS [functional near-infrared spectroscopy], or fMRI [functional magnetic resonance imaging]) was not collected at the same time as driving simulation data.

Seventy-six full text articles of the 736 studies that met inclusion criteria were included in the final review. The 76 articles used one of the following neuroscience methods electrophysiology, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, or functional magnetic resonance imaging.
