However, its rapid degradation rate after implantation and the limited biocompatibility restrict its application in clinic. Constructing a multifunctional bioactive polymer coating on the magnesium alloys represents one of the popular and effective approaches to simultaneously improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. In the present study, the copolymer of 6-arm polyethylene glycol and heparin (PEG-Hep) was successfully synthesized and then immobilized on the surface of chitosan (Chi)-modified magnesium alloy surface through electrostatic interaction to improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The results of attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy showed that a dense and compact coating was created on the magnesium alloy surface. The coating displayed excellent hydrophilicity. At the same time, the as-prepared coating can significantly not only improve the corrosion potential, reduce the corrosion current and the pH changes of the immersion solution, but also keep a relatively intact surface morphology after immersing in simulated body fluid solution for 14 days, demonstrating that the coating can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy. Moreover, the magnesium alloy with PEG-Hep coating exhibited excellent hemocompatibility according to the results of the hemolysis rate and platelet adhesion and activation. GW2580 manufacturer In addition, the modified magnesium alloy had a good ability to promote the endothelial cell adhesion and proliferation. Therefore, the PEG-Hep multifunctional coating can be applied in the surface modification of the biodegradable magnesium alloy stent to simultaneously improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.Polymeric vesicles served as the most promising candidates of drug delivery nanocarriers are attracting increasing attention in cancer therapy. Significant advantages have been reported, including hydrophilic molecules with high loading capacity, controllable drug release, rapid and smart responses to stimuli and versatile functionalities. In this study, we have made a systematic review of all aspects of nano-vesicles as drug delivery vectors for cancer treatment, mainly including the following aspect characteristics of polymeric nanovesicles, polymeric nanovesicle synthesis, and recent progress in applying polymeric nanovesicles in antitumor drug delivery. Polymer nanovesicles have the advantages of synergistic photothermal and imaging in improving the anticancer effect. Therefore, we believe that drug carrier of polymer nanovesicles is a key direction for cancer treatment.Heavy metal contamination not only causes threat to human health but also raises sustainable development concerns. The use of traditional methods to remediate heavy metal contamination is however time-consuming, and the remediation efficiency may not meet the requirements as expected. The present study conducted a series of test tube experiments to investigate the effect of calcium source on the lead and copper removals. In addition to the test tube experiments, numerical simulations were performed using Visual MINTEQ software package considering different degrees of urea hydrolysis derived from the experiments. The remediation efficiency degrades when NH4 + and OH- concentrations are not sufficient to precipitate the majority of Pb2+ and Cu2+. It also degrades when CaO turns pH into highly alkaline conditions. The numerical simulations do not take the dissolution of precipitation into account and therefore overestimate the remediation efficiency when subjected to lower Pb(NO3)2 or Cu(NO3)2 concentrations. The findings highlight the potential of applying the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation to lead and copper remediations.Diapause is an important biological characteristic for many insect species to adapt to adverse environmental conditions and maintain the continuity of the race. Compared with the traditional hydrochloric acid or/and cold storage treatment methods, the artificial corona incubation technology of silkworm (Bombyx mori) eggs has many advantages including, the absence of pollution, easy operation and safety. However, this technology has not yet been applied in sericulture. In this study, we developed a novel artificial corona instrument to successfully disrupt the diapause of newly laid and refrigerated eggs from various Chinese and Japanese lineage silkworm strains. Subsequently, we invented a very early corona treatment (VECT) strategy to prevent the diapause of newly laid silkworm eggs within 4 h of oviposition. The hatching rates of the larvae were more than 95% in all diapause silkworm strains, which was comparable to the effect of the traditional HCl treatment strategy. In addition, we developed a combination strategy of VECT and pre-blastoderm microinjection and successfully created transgenic silkworms in various diapause strains. The results of the current study can aid in improving the corona artificial incubation technology and promote its application in sericulture.Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women. Researchers have found that the combined use of multiple methods to treat tumors is a promising strategy. Here, we have developed a biomimetic nano-platform PDA@MB for tumor targeted photothermal therapy (PTT) combined with chemotherapy. The 4T1 cell membrane loaded with cucurbitacin B (CuB) was used to coat polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles, which gave PDA@MB nanoparticles the ability to target tumors and escape immune cells from phagocytosis. PDA@MB showed excellent photothermal performance including high photothermal conversion efficiency and photostability, and exhibited outstanding in vitro PTT effect under NIR laser irradiation. The high temperature ruptured the PDA@MB membrane to release CuB, which changed the tumor hypoxic environment, down-regulated the FAK/MMP signaling pathway, and significantly inhibited the metastasis and proliferation of tumor cells. The results of in vivo experiments indicated that the tumor growth of the 4T1 mouse tumor model was significantly inhibited. Additionally, toxicity studies showed that PDA@MB had good biocompatibility and safety. In conclusion, this study provides a promising chemo-photothermal therapy (CPT) nano-platform for precise and effective breast cancer therapy.Organ-on-a-chip (OoC), also known as micro physiological systems or "tissue chips" have attracted substantial interest in recent years due to their numerous applications, especially in precision medicine, drug development and screening. Organ-on-a-chip devices can replicate key aspects of human physiology, providing insights into the studied organ function and disease pathophysiology. Moreover, these can accurately be used in drug discovery for personalized medicine. These devices present useful substitutes to traditional preclinical cell culture methods and can reduce the use of in vivo animal studies. In the last few years OoC design technology has seen dramatic advances, leading to a wide range of biomedical applications. These advances have also revealed not only new challenges but also new opportunities. There is a need for multidisciplinary knowledge from the biomedical and engineering fields to understand and realize OoCs. The present review provides a snapshot of this fast-evolving technology, discusses current applications and highlights advantages and disadvantages for biomedical approaches.Drug-carrying nanoparticles have obtained great attention for disease treatments due to the fact that they can improve drug solubility, provide drug protection and prolong release duration, thus enhancing drug bioavailability and increasing therapeutic efficacy. Although nanoparticles containing drugs can be administered via different routes such as oral, intravenous and ocular, transdermal delivery of nanoparticles mediated by microneedles has attracted considerable interest due to the capability of circumventing enzymatic degradation caused by gastrointestinal track, and increasing patient compliance by reducing pain associated with hypodermic injection. In this review, we first introduce four types of nanoparticles that were used for drug delivery, and then summarize strategies that have been employed to facilitate delivery of drug-loaded nanoparticles via microneedles. Finally, we give a conclusion and provide our perspectives on the potential clinical translation of microneedle-facilitated nanoparticles delivery.Conductive hydrogel is a vital candidate for the fabrication of flexible and wearable electric sensors due to its good designability and biocompatibility. These well-designed conductive hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors show great potential in human motion monitoring, artificial skin, brain computer interface (BCI), and so on. However, easy drying and freezing of conductive hydrogels with high water content greatly limited their further application. Herein, we proposed a natural polymer-based conductive hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, low water loss, and freeze-tolerance. The main hydrogel network was formed by the Schiff base reaction between the hydrazide-grafted hyaluronic acid and the oxidized chitosan, and the added KCl worked as the conductive filler. The reversible crosslinking in the prepared hydrogel resulted in its resilience and self-healing feature. At the same time, the synthetic effect of KCl and glycerol endowed our hydrogel with outstanding anti-freezing property, while glycerol also endowed this hydrogel with anti-drying property. When this hydrogel was assembled as a flexible strain sensor, it showed good sensitivity (GF = 2.64), durability, and stability even under cold condition (-37°C).Ovarian cancer has the highest mortality of all of the gynecological malignancies. There are several distinct histotypes of this malignancy characterized by specific molecular events and clinical behavior. These histotypes have differing responses to platinum-based drugs that have been the mainstay of therapy for ovarian cancer for decades. For histotypes that initially respond to a chemotherapeutic regime of carboplatin and paclitaxel such as high-grade serous ovarian cancer, the development of chemoresistance is common and underpins incurable disease. Recent discoveries have led to the clinical use of PARP (poly ADP ribose polymerase) inhibitors for ovarian cancers defective in homologous recombination repair, as well as the anti-angiogenic bevacizumab. While predictive molecular testing involving identification of a genomic scar and/or the presence of germline or somatic BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation are in clinical use to inform the likely success of a PARP inhibitor, no similar tests are available to identify es, represent enhanced starting points from which improved translational outcomes for women with ovarian cancer will emerge. In this study water soluble compounds that form complexes with Rare Earth Elements (REE) and other metals were isolated from Calothrix brevissima biomass with chromatographic methods for the first time. Molecular characterization showed that the isolated compounds are most likely polysaccharides comprised of arabinose, xylose, mannose, galactose and glucose. FT-IR analysis revealed functional groups involved in the binding mechanism of Tb are likely sulfate- and to a lesser extend hydroxyl-groups. The binding specificity of the isolated compounds was investigated with different metal solutions. Here, ions of the alkali and alkaline earth metals Na, K, Mg and Ca showed no competition for Tb-binding even at 10-fold excess concentration. Ions of the elements Co and Pb on the other hand replaced Tb at higher concentrations. Addition of the isolated compounds significantly reduced the precipitation of Eu at pH-values between 6.7 and 9.5, indicating that the interaction between the isolated chelators and Rare Earth Metals is stable even at high pH-values.
