Recent evidence suggests that young rodents submitted to high fructose (FRU) diet develop metabolic, and cognitive dysfunctions. However, it remains unclear whether these detrimental effects of FRU intake can also be observed in middle-aged mice. Nine months-old C57BL/6 female mice were fed with water (Control) or 10% FRU in drinking water during 12 weeks. After that, metabolic, and neurochemical alterations were evaluated, focusing on neurotransmitters, and antioxidant defenses. Behavioral parameters related to motor activity, memory, anxiety, and depression were also evaluated. Mice consuming FRU diet displayed increased water, and caloric intake, resulting in weight gain, which was partially compensated due to decreased food pellet intake. FRU fed animals displayed increased plasma glucose, and cholesterol levels, which was not observed in overnight-fasted animals. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities were markedly decreased in the prefrontal cortex of animals receiving FRU diet, while glutathione peroxidase (GPx) slightly increased. Liver (lower GPx), striatum (higher SOD and lower CAT), and hippocampus (no changes) were less impacted. No changes were observed in glutathione reductase, and thioredoxin reductase activities, two ancillary enzymes for peroxide detoxification. FRU intake did not alter serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine levels in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and striatum. No significant alterations were observed in working, and short-term spatial memory; and in anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in animals treated with FRU. Increased locomotor activity was observed in FRU-fed middle-aged mice, as evaluated in the open field, elevated plus-maze, Y maze, and object location tasks. Overall, these results demonstrate that high FRU consumption can disturb antioxidant defenses, and increase locomotor activity in middle-aged mice, open the opportunity for further studies to address the underlying mechanisms related to these findings.

To investigate the differences in nutritional status 1year after pancreaticogastrostomy (PG) using vertical suturing (VS) vs. twin square horizontal mattress (HMS) suturing in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD).

The subjects of this study were 134 patients who underwent PD, followed by PG, which was closed by VS in 52 and by HMS in 82. We evaluated the peri- and postoperative factors, nutritional parameters, diameter of the remnant main pancreatic duct, and glucose intolerance 1year postoperatively.

Forty-five (87%) patients from the VS group and 75 (91%) patients from the HMS group survived for more than 1year. The incidences of intraabdominal abscess and pancreatic fistula were significantly lower in the HMS group than in the VS group (19.2% vs. 6.6% and19.2% vs. 2.6%, respectively). There were no significant changes in the total protein, serum albumin, and HbA1c levels 1year postoperatively. The postoperative expansion ratio of the main pancreatic duct diameter was significantly smaller in the HMS group than in the VS group. The strongest risk factor for body weight loss 1year postoperatively was a non-soft pancreas texture.

HMS was superior to VS for preventing early postoperative complications and did not affect pancreatic function.

HMS was superior to VS for preventing early postoperative complications and did not affect pancreatic function. It is known that some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are used worldwide, and these pollutants are dangerous for human health. However, there are still countries where measurements of these pollutants have not been adequately measured. Although many studies have been published for determining the concentrations of POPs in Turkey, there are limited studies in Latin American countries like Peru. For this reason, it is essential both to conduct a study in Peru and to compare the study with another country. This study is aimed at determining the atmospheric POPs such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), organochlorine pesticide (OCP), and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations using passive air samplers in Yurimaguas (Peru) and Bursa (Turkey). Molecular diagnosis ratios and ring distribution methods were used to determine the sources of PAHs. According to these methods, coal and biomass combustions were among the primary sources of PAHs in Peru, while petrogenic and petroleum were the primary sources of PAHs in Turkey. Then, α-HCH/γ-HCH and β-/(α+γ)-HCH ratios were used to determine the sources of OCPs. According to the α-HCH/γ-HCH ratios, the primary sources of OCPs in both countries were lindane. Similarly, according to β-/(α+γ)-HCH ratios, the HCHs have been historically used in Peru while they were recently utilized in Turkey. Finally, homologous group distributions were used to determine the sources of PCBs. Similar distributions of homologous groups were observed in the sampling sites in both countries. Also, the homologous group distributions obtained have been determined that industrial activities could be effective in the sampling areas in both countries. When the cancer risks that could occur via inhalation were evaluated, no significant cancer risk has been determined in both countries. The perception of a complex scene requires visual mechanisms that include identifying objects and their relative placement in depth. To examine apparent depth perception in birds, we tested four pigeons with a novel multiple-sequential-choice procedure. We created 3D-rendered scene stimuli containing three objects located at different apparent depths based on a variety of pictorial cues and placed small circular target response areas on them. The pigeons were trained to sequentially choose among the multiple response areas to report the object closest in apparent depth (ordinal position; front then middle object). After the pigeons learned this sequential depth discrimination, their use of three different monocular depth cues (occlusion, relative size, height in field) was tested, and their flexibility evaluated using three novel objects. In addition to the contribution to understanding apparent depth perception in birds, the use of more flexible open-ended choice discriminations, as employed here, has considerable promise for creating informative production-like tasks in nonverbal animals.Pediatric nephrology has a history rooted in pediatric advocacy and has made numerous contributions to child health policy affecting pediatric kidney diseases. Despite this progress, profound social disparities remain for marginalized and socially vulnerable children with kidney disease. Different risk factors, such as genetic predisposition, environmental factors, social risk factors, or health care access influence the emergence and progression of pediatric kidney disease, as well as access to life-saving interventions, leading to disparate outcomes. This review will summarize the breadth of literature on social determinants of health in children with kidney disease worldwide and highlight policy-based initiatives that mitigate the adverse social factors to generate greater equity in pediatric kidney disease.

The steady development of biotechnology-derived therapeutic biologics over the last few decades has generated drugs that are now standard medical treatments for a range of indications. While the development of protein products has surged in recent years, the formulation and delivery of these complex molecules have relied on drug-specific studies and, in some instances, data from non-proteinaceous drug products. The commonalities, trends, and gaps in excipient technologies used to support the development of therapeutic proteins largely remain unexplored due to the drug-specific nature of many formulations.

Using a comprehensiveandrelational database approach, we aimed to provide a scientific survey of all approved or licensed biotechnology-derived drug products with the goal of providing evidence-based information on common attributes and trending features in protein product excipients. We examined 665 formulations, and 395 unique formulations based on having unique excipients within them, that supported 2 hormones. We also report on excipients unique to protein drug products, such as amino acids, solubilizers, and lyoprotectants. Overall, our report summarizes the current landscape of excipients used in marketed biotechnology-derived therapeutic biologic products. The authors would like to call the reader's attention to the fact that unfortunately the name of Jianzhang Pan was missing as co-author of this contribution.Over the past few years, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have attracted much attention due to their medicinally attractive properties and their possible application in cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, there is still a lack of appropriate methods to enable quantitative monitoring of the particle changes in a physiological environment, which could be beneficial for evaluating their in vitro and in vivo behavior. For this reason, the main goal of this study was the development of a novel capillary electrophoresis-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICP-MS/MS) method for the determination of SPIONs suitable for the future examination of their changes upon incubation with proteins under simulated physiological conditions. The type and flow rate of the collision/reaction gas were chosen with the aim of simultaneous monitoring of Fe and S. The type and concentration of the background electrolyte, applied voltage, and sample loading were optimized to obtain SPION signals of the highest intensity and minimum half-width of the peak. Analytical parameters were at a satisfactory level reproducibility (intra- and inter-day) of migration times and peak areas (presented as RSD) in the range of 0.23-4.98%, recovery 96.7% and 93.3%, the limit of detection (for monitoring 56Fe16O+ by mass-shift approach) 54 ng mL-1 Fe (0.97 μM) and 101 ng mL-1 Fe (1.82 μM) for SPIONs with carboxyl and amino terminal groups, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported use of CE-ICP-MS/MS for the quantification of SPIONs and monitoring of interactions with proteins.

In this review, we will discuss the state of the literature regarding Rezūm and opportunities for its application in the treatment of BPH.

A comprehensive review of original research on convective water vapor thermal therapy (Rezūm) was conducted. Articles related to transurethral resection of the prostate, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate, Aquablation, and greenlight photoselective vaporization of the prostate were reviewed for discussion.

Rezūm distinguishes itself from other treatment options by its durable improvement in objective clinical outcomes such as IPSS and BPH Impact Index, while being cost-effective and versatile in its ability to treat a variety of prostate gland morphologies. CM272 supplier This treatment option shows good lower urinary tract symptom relief, especially in small-to-moderate prostate sizes (30-80cc). The use of convective heat transfer is unique and allows for localized treatment, avoiding damage to surrounding structures, thus providing an excellent safety profile and sexual function preservation.
