We aimed to assess ascitic fluid with the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) to determine non-invasive, stand-alone, differentiation criteria for benign and malignant intraperitoneal effusions. Materials and Methods Sixty-one patients with known IPCs who underwent magnetic resonance examinations for reasons such as tumor staging, undetermined abdominal mass and disease follow up were retrospectively included in this study. All subjects had a final diagnosis of the fluid based on pathological examinations, which were divided into benign (n = 37) and malignant (n = 24) IPCs groups. ADC values were measured separately by two radiologists, and the average values were used for comparing the two groups by consuming the independent samples t-test. The receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to test the ADC values' diagnostic ability to distinguish malignant from benign collections. Results The differentiation between benign and malignant IPCs based on ADC values was statistically significant (p = 0.0034). The mean ADC values were higher for the benign (3.543 × 10-3 mm2/s) than for the malignant group (3.057 × 10-3 mm2/s). The optimum ADC cutoff point for the diagnosis of malignant ascites was less then 3.241 × 10-3 mm2/s, with a sensitivity of 77.78% and a specificity of 80%. Conclusions ADC represents a noninvasive and reproducible imaging parameter that may help to assess intraperitoneal collections. Although successful in distinguishing malignant from benign IPCs, further research must be conducted in order to certify if the difference in ADC values is a consequence of the physical characteristics of the ascitic fluids or their appurtenance to a certain histopathological group.Defects in mucosal immune balance can lead to colonic diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer. With the advancement of understanding for the immunological and molecular basis of colonic disease, therapies targeting transcription factors have become a potential approach for the treatment of colonic disease. To date, the biomedical significance of unique post-translational modifications on transcription factors has been identified, including phosphorylation, methylation, acetylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation, and O-GlcNAcylation. This review focuses on our current understanding and the emerging evidence of how post-translational regulations modify transcription factors involved in the etiology and pathophysiology of colonic disease as well as the implications of these findings for new therapeutic approaches in these disorders.Nitrated phospholipids have recently been detected in vitro and in vivo and associated with beneficial health effects. They were identified and quantified in biological samples by lipidomics methodologies using liquid chromatography-collision-induced dissociation (CID) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) acquired with the linear ion trap mass spectrometer. Only a few studies have used higher-energy collision dissociation (HCD)-MS/MS in high-resolution Orbitraps to characterize nitrated phosphatidylserines and nitrated cardiolipins, highlighting the marked differences in the fragmentation patterns when using CID or HCD fragmentation methods. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the fragmentation of nitrated phosphatidylcholine and nitrated phosphatidylethanolamine species under HCD-MS/MS. We studied the effect of normalized collision energy (NCE) in the fragmentation pattern to identify the best acquisition conditions and reporter ions to detect nitrated phospholipids. The results showed that the intensity of the typical neutral loss of nitrous acid (HNO2) diminishes with increasing NCE, becoming non-detectable for a higher NCE. Thus, the loss of HNO2 could not be the most suitable ion/fragment for the characterization of nitrated phospholipids under HCD. In HCD-MS/MS new fragment ions were identified, corresponding to the nitrated fatty acyl chains, NO2-RCOO-, (NO2-RCOOH-H2O + H)+, and (NO2-RCOOH + H)+, suggested as potential reporter ions to detect nitrated phospholipids when using the HCD-MS/MS lipidomics analysis.Facial expressions are one of the important non-verbal ways used to understand human emotions during communication. Thus, acquiring and reproducing facial expressions is helpful in analyzing human emotional states. However, owing to complex and subtle facial muscle movements, facial expression modeling from images with face poses is difficult to achieve. To handle this issue, we present a method for acquiring facial expressions from a non-frontal single photograph using a 3D-aided approach. In addition, we propose a contour-fitting method that improves the modeling accuracy by automatically rearranging 3D contour landmarks corresponding to fixed 2D image landmarks. The acquired facial expression input can be parametrically manipulated to create various facial expressions through a blendshape or expression transfer based on the FACS (Facial Action Coding System). To achieve a realistic facial expression synthesis, we propose an exemplar-texture wrinkle synthesis method that extracts and synthesizes appropriate expression wrinkles according to the target expression. To do so, we constructed a wrinkle table of various facial expressions from 400 people. As one of the applications, we proved that the expression-pose synthesis method is suitable for expression-invariant face recognition through a quantitative evaluation, and showed the effectiveness based on a qualitative evaluation. We expect our system to be a benefit to various fields such as face recognition, HCI, and data augmentation for deep learning.Academic performance could be affected by multiple factors, including stress and learning environment location. The aim of this study was to analyze differences in psychophysiological stress markers, behavior and academic performance of rural and city students. A sample of 181 children (7.91 ± 2.29 years) from elementary schools were evaluated on their grades, subjective academic performance, heart rate variability, state anxiety, nutritional information and physical activity habits. Results presented significant higher values in parasympathetic modulation and physical education grades in rural students than in city students, who showed higher significant values in state anxiety, the ability to complete tasks, physical activity habits and several items relating to their food and drink habits. No significant differences were found in the average grades between the two groups. However, some correlations were found between school performance and stress, physical fitness and nutritional habits. Thus, school location may affect the stress and anxiety status, nutritional habits and physical activities of students, but there were no significant differences in academic performance. In addition, body mass index, quantity of food intake and stress markers may be related to the academic performance attained.Common clinical options, currently, for necessary splenectomy are vaccinations and antibiotic prophylaxis. However, despite these two adjuncts, there still occur numerous cases of overwhelming post-splenectomy infection. To examine whether reperfusion of critical splenic lymphocytes could boost immune response, we harvested splenic lymphocytes, reperfused the autologous lymphocytes, and then administered a pneumococcal vaccine (PNEUMOVAX®23, i.e., PPSV23) in splenectomized mice. We found that splenectomy impaired the immune response in the splenectomized group compared to the non-splenectomized group; the splenectomized group with lymphocyte reinfusion had a higher response to polysaccharide vaccination based on antibody titer than the splenectomized group without lymphocyte reinfusion. The sham group with the native spleen had the most elevated antibody titer against the PPSV23 polysaccharide antigen. This may be additive, resulting from contributions of the splenic structure, along with the phagocytic function of the spleen and its constituent cells affecting the antibody response. Reinfusion of splenic lymphocytes may enhance immunity without the complications associated with splenic fragment autotransplantation, which never gained acceptance. This technique is safe and simple since the splenic lymphocytes are autologous and, therefore, not self-reactive, and very similar to autologous blood transfusion. This concept may be beneficial in cases of unavoidable splenectomy, especially in pediatric cases.In this research, a bilayer coating has been applied on the surface of 316 L stainless steel (316LSS) to provide highly proliferated metallic implants for bone regeneration. The first layer was prepared using electrophoretic deposition of graphene oxide (GO), while the top layer was coated utilizing electrospinning of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gelatin (Ge)/forsterite solutions. The morphology, porosity, wettability, biodegradability, bioactivity, cell attachment and cell viability of the prepared coatings were evaluated. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) results revealed the formation of uniform, continuous, and bead-free nanofibers. The Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS) results confirmed well-distributed forsterite nanoparticles in the structure of the top coating. The porosity of the electrospun nanofibers was found to be above 70%. The water contact angle measurements indicated an improvement in the wettability of the coating by increasing the amount of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the electrospun nanofibers containing 1 and 3 wt.% of forsterite nanoparticles showed significant bioactivity after soaking in the simulated body fluid (SBF) solution for 21 days. In addition, to investigate the in vitro analysis, the MG-63 cells were cultured on the PCL/Ge/forsterite and GO-PCL/Ge/forsterite coatings. The results confirmed an excellent cell adhesion along with considerable cell growth and proliferation.
