001).Fifty-seven percent of abstracts presented by women were published versus 48% of abstracts presented by men. Overall, there was no significant difference between genders in terms of subsequent conversions into a scientific publication within each specialty (P = .25-1.0).In radiation oncology, women presented 67% of abstracts and published 95% of their presented abstracts, and in medical oncology, 66% of abstracts were from women and 57% of the presented abstracts were published. Among the published abstracts, 83% had the same first author in the abstract and the publication. Among those who lost their first-authorship status, 59% were women. However, there was no statistically significant difference between specialties for loss of first-author status. Conclusions We observed that from 2013 to 2016, women had the highest presentation and publication rate in radiation oncology. More prospective data are needed to monitor the progress of women in all specialties and their specific needs.Circadian rhythms evolved within single cell organisms and serve to regulate rest-activity cycles in most single-cell and multiple-cell organisms. In contrast, sleep is a network emergent property found in animals with a nervous system. Rhythms and sleep are much entangled involving shared regulatory molecules such as adenosine, ATP, cytokines, neurotrophins, and nitric oxide. These molecules are activity-dependent and act locally to initiate regulatory events involved in rhythms, sleep, and plasticity.Purpose To report successful management of acute ocular graft-versus-host disease (oGVHD) by self-retained cryopreserved amniotic membrane (AM). Observations A 69-year-old male developed acute oGVHD following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with severe dryness, pain, photophobia, and blurred vision, the right eye worse than the left eye. Despite topical artificial tears, corticosteroids, and bandage contact lens (BCL) for two weeks, his right eye deteriorated with increasing redness and blurred vision and presented with diffuse conjunctival inflammation, severe superficial punctate keratitis, and corneal and limbal epithelial defect. Hence, self-retained cryopreserved AM was applied in the right eye while conventional therapy was continued in the left eye. Placement of self-retained AM for 3-days resulted in resolution of symptoms, reduction in inflammation, and complete re-epithelialization of the corneal and limbal defect with the visual acuity improving from 20/500 to 20/70 in the right eye. In contrast, the visual acuity improved from 20/300 to 20/150 and remained inflamed with conventional therapy in the left eye. One-month post-AM placement, the right eye remained asymptomatic with the visual acuity improved to 20/30 without any additional therapy, whereas the left eye improved to 20/70 with conventional treatment of BCL, loteprednol, and artificial tears. Conclusions and importance This case suggests application of self-retained AM can be an effective treatment to accelerate the restoration of vision and corneal surface health for acute oGVHD.Purpose Delayed hypotony can be a vision threatening complication following aqueous shunt surgery in patients with glaucoma. Multiple medical and surgical management strategies have been utilized, but results have been inconsistent. The present case series describes management of delayed hypotony associated with the Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) by surgically introducing 4-0 polypropylene suture into the tube lumen. Observations The cases of four patients who presented with hypotony following BGI surgery were reviewed. Following BGI tube lumen occlusion with suture, sustained intraocular pressure increase (mean 7.25 mmHg, range 4-14) was noted in all patients and visual acuity improved in three cases. Conclusions and importance This is the first report of ab interno suture occlusion of the BGI for management of post-operative hypotony. Further studies are required to determine the utility of this procedure, but our results suggest that in select patients, ab interno suture occlusion be advantageous in managing delayed hypotony refractive to medical therapy.Purpose To report a case of bilateral idiopathic chorioretinal folds that seemed to be related to an atypical staphyloma. Observations A 49-year old man without medical history consulted for slight vision loss and metamorphopsia in the left eye. The ophthalmologic examination revealed moderate myopia and bilateral chorioretinal folds in the posterior pole, confirmed by multimodal imaging. Orbital and systemic examinations ruled out all the known etiologies of chorioretinal folds. 3-D optical coherence tomography and B-scan suggested that the folds were related to an atypical staphyloma that developed in the temporal part of the fundus, while sparing the peripapillary area. The peripapillary area, spared by the staphyloma process, appeared as a "dome-shaped disc" compared to the staphylomatous area. Conclusion and importance This case suggests that myopic patients with unusual staphyloma located outside the peripapillary area could develop chorioretinal folds.SARS-CoV-2 (previously 2019-nCoV or Wuhan coronavirus) caused an unprecedented fast-spreading worldwide pandemic. Although currently with a rather low mortality rate, the virus spread rapidly over the world using the modern world's traffic highways. Nintedanib order The coronavirus (CoV) family members were responsible for several deadly outbreaks and epidemics during the last decade. Not only governments but also the scientific community reacted promptly to the outbreak, and information is shared quickly. For example, the genetic fingerprint was shared, and the 3D structure of key proteins was rapidly solved, which can be used for the discovery of potential treatments. An overview is given on the current knowledge of the spread, disease course, and molecular biology of SARS-CoV-2. We discuss potential treatment developments in the context of recent outbreaks, drug repurposing, and development timelines.ATP13A2 is the autosomal recessive causative gene for juvenile-onset Parkinson's disease (PARK9, Parkinson's disease 9), also known as Kufor-Rakeb syndrome. The disease is characterized by levodopa-responsive Parkinsonism, supranuclear gaze palsy, spasticity, and dementia. Previously, we have reported that Atp13a2 deficient medaka fish showed dopaminergic neurodegeneration and lysosomal dysfunction, indicating that lysosome-autophagy impairment might be one of the key pathogeneses of Parkinson's disease. Here, we established Atp13a2 deficient zebrafish using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing. We found that the number of TH + neurons in the posterior tuberculum and the locus coeruleus significantly reduced (dopaminergic neurons, 64 % at 4 months and 37 % at 12 months, p less then 0.001 and p less then 0.05, respectively; norepinephrine neurons, 52 % at 4 months and 40 % at 12 months, p less then 0.001 and p less then 0.05, respectively) in Atp13a2 deficient zebrafish, proving the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons.
