The phospholipase D (PLD) family has a ubiquitous expression in cells. PLD isoforms (PLDs) and their hydrolysate phosphatidic acid (PA) have been demonstrated to engage in multiple stages of cancer progression. Aberrant expression of PLDs, especially PLD1 and PLD2, has been detected in various cancers. Inhibition or elimination of PLDs activity has been shown to reduce tumour growth and metastasis. PLDs and PA also serve as downstream effectors of various cell-surface receptors, to trigger and regulate propagation of intracellular signals in the process of tumourigenesis and metastasis. Here, we discuss recent advances in understanding the functions of PLDs and PA in discrete stages of cancer progression, including cancer cell growth, invasion and migration, and angiogenesis, with special emphasis on the tumour-associated signalling pathways mediated by PLDs and PA and the functional importance of PLDs and PA in cancer therapy. © 2020 Cambridge Philosophical Society.This study aimed to investigate the effect of academic hatred, referring to the hatred of academic work, on the developmental process of the core dimensions of academic burnout, namely, emotional exhaustion and cynicism. Data were collected from 1015 (57.3% female) senior high school students in South Korea. The results showed that emotional exhaustion, cynicism and academic hatred were stable across three waves. An autoregressive cross-lagged model showed that emotional exhaustion was predictive of future academic hatred, which in turn was associated with future cynicism. Significant mediation pathways were also identified, with academic hatred mediating the longitudinal link between emotional exhaustion and cynicism. This longitudinal study can strengthen the understanding of academic hatred within the developmental process of academic burnout. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.Split-thickness skin graft (STSG) helps to promote healing of wounds by providing a viable soft tissue cover. However, the success of which is influenced by how well it takes to the recipient site. Studies have demonstrated that negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is an excellent modality to promote graft survival. Technological advancements have made possible the invention of disposable, ultraportable, and mechanically operated versions for improved user experience. Alas, little has been discussed about their benefits on STSG. Therefore, the purpose of this case report is to highlight the effective use of disposable NPWT on freshly applied STSG. We report here a novel use of the disposable NPWT (SNAP therapy system) for STSG recipient sites in two patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) foot wounds. In both patients, there was 100% STSG uptake, and the lightweight disposable NPWT system makes for a more cost-effective and comfortable experience for patients. Disposable NPWT may be a feasible alternative to conventional NPWT to aid with STSG uptake for PAD foot wound recipient sites. © 2020 Medicalhelplines.com Inc and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.BACKGROUND In the recent outbreak of novel coronavirus infection in Wuhan, China, significantly abnormal coagulation parameters in severe novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) cases were a concern. OBJECTIVES To describe the coagulation feature of patients with NCP. METHODS Conventional coagulation results and outcomes of 183 consecutive patients with confirmed NCP in Tongji hospital were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS The overall mortality was 11.5%, the non-survivors revealed significantly higher D-dimer and fibrin degradation product (FDP) levels, longer prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time compared to survivors on admission (P  less then  .05); 71.4% of non-survivors and 0.6% survivors met the criteria of disseminated intravascular coagulation during their hospital stay. A novel technique is presented for treating gingival recession on maxillary molars utilizing a rotated subepithelial connective tissue pedicle graft. The technique is designed to maximize perfusion to the graft as compared to a free graft. CASE PRESENTATIONS The authors present two cases in which the technique was utilized to achieve attachment gain and root coverage. The cases were followed for at least 2 months. CONCLUSIONS More than 5mm of attachment was gained and 55-60% root coverage achieved over recession defects on maxillary first molars. The following case reports demonstrate that the Reverse Palatal Pedicle Graft (RPPG) technique was successful in improving root coverage over maxillary palatal recession defects.
