Pre-hydrolysed/condensed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was added to a solution of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MAPTMS), and then copolymerised for various times to study the influence of the latter on the structure of hybrid sol-gel coatings as corrosion protection of aluminium alloy 7075-T6. The reactions taking place during preparation were characterised using real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and gel permeation chromatography. The solution characteristics were evaluated, using viscosimetry, followed by measurements of thermal stability determined by thermogravimetric analysis. The optimal temperature for the condensation reaction was determined with the help of high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry. Once deposited on 7075-T6 substrates, the coatings were evaluated using a field emission scanning electron microscope coupled to an energy dispersive spectrometer to determine surface morphology, topography, composition and coating thickness. Selleck CX-5461 Corrosion properties were tested in dilute Harrison's solution (3.5 g/L (NH4)2SO4 and 0.5 g/L NaCl) using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The copolymerization of MMA and MAPTMS over 4 h was optimal for obtaining 1.4 µm thick coating with superior barrier protection against corrosion attack (Z10 mHz 1 GΩ cm2) during three months of exposure to the corrosive medium.Cancer cachexia or wasting is a paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by systemic inflammation and an involuntary loss of body mass that cannot be reversed by normal nutritional support. This syndrome affects 50%-80% of cancer patients, depending on the tumor type and patient characteristics, and it is responsible for up to 20% of cancer deaths. MicroRNAs are a class of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) with 19 to 24 nucleotides in length of which the function is to regulate gene expression. In the last years, microRNAs and other ncRNAs have been demonstrated to have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of several diseases and clinical potential. Recently, ncRNAs have begun to be associated with cancer cachexia by modulating essential functions like the turnover of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. Additionally, circulating microRNAs have been suggested as potential biomarkers for patients at risk of developing cancer cachexia. In this review article, we present recent data concerning the role of microRNAs and other ncRNAs in cancer cachexia pathogenesis and their possible clinical relevance. This paper proposes a modified architecture of the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile network to provide services for the Internet of Things (IoT). This is achieved by allocating a narrow bandwidth and transferring the scheduling functions from the eNodeB base station to an NB-IoT controller. A method for allocating uplink and downlink resources of the LTE/NB-IoT hybrid technology is applied to ensure the Quality of Service (QoS) from end-to-end. This method considers scheduling traffic/resources on the NB-IoT controller, which allows eNodeB planning to remain unchanged. This paper also proposes a prioritization approach within the IoT traffic to provide End-to-End (E2E) QoS in the integrated LTE/NB-IoT network. Further, we develop "smart queue" management algorithms for the IoT traffic prioritization. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, we performed a number of experiments using simulations. We concluded that our proposed approach ensures high end-to-end QoS of the real-time traffic by reducing the average end-to-end transmission delay.Lactobacilli administration has been suggested for the treatment and prevention of bacterial vaginosis, which increases the risk for preterm birth. We aimed to evaluate the vaginal colonization of lactobacilli orally administered to pregnant women at risk for preterm birth. We performed a randomized and controlled crossover study between January 2016 and May 2017. Forty pregnant women at high risk for preterm birth with normal vaginal flora (Nugent score ≤ 3) were randomized to either receive two oral capsules/day each containing 5 × 109 Lactobacilli (L.) rhamnosus GR-1 and L. reuteri RC-14 (n = 20) or no treatment (n = 20) for 2 months. Treatments were then crossed over for an additional two months. A vaginal examination and swabbing were performed for assessment of bacterial vaginosis at baseline and every month until study completion. At the same time points, vaginal samples were cultured and subjected to matrix-assisted-laser-desorption/ionization-time-of-flight-mass-spectrometry (MALDI TOF-MS) for the detection of the specific bacterial strains contained in the capsules. The primary endpoint was the presence of the administered lactobacilli strains in the vagina during the first two months of follow-up. Thirty-eight women completed the study. During the first two months of treatment, L. rhamnosus GR-1 was detected in one (5%) woman on the probiotic treatment and 2 (11%) women receiving no treatment (p = 0.6). L. rhamnosus GR-1 was detected in vaginal samples of 4 (11%) women during probiotic treatment (of both groups) and L. reuteri RC-14 was not detected in any samples. The rest of the endpoints were not different between the groups. Altogether, vaginal colonization of lactobacilli following oral administration is low during pregnancy.Adhesive bonding is widely used in the joining of metals and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs). Ultrasonic vibration was used to improve adhesive bonding of CFRP/Al alloy joints grafted with silane coupling agent, and the effect of the ultrasound on the bonding was studied. The surface of Al alloy was treated with a silane coupling agent, and then the ultrasonic vibration was applied on the adherend during the adhesive bonding process. The shear strength was tested, and the mechanism was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). It is found that the ultrasonic assisting can further promote the bonding of the Al alloy and the adhesive. For the test joins, the shear strength was increased by 267.50% using the silanization treatment plus the ultrasonic assisting. The ultrasonic assisting promoted the grafted epoxy group to react with the adhesive more sufficiently at the Al/adhesive interface by causing micro-mixing and intensified molecule collision, and thus more chemical bond was formed.
