INTRODUCTION Whether the location of symptoms or physical examination findings delineates the appropriate spinal range for imaging has not been thoroughly investigated for VFs. The present study aims to analyze the consistency between the fractural vertebrae location and the location suggested by patient-reported pain or physical examination findings. METHODS This observational study, following a prospective design, enrolled 358 patients with VFs. The locations of two symptoms (patient-reported back pain [P-RBP], radiating pain [RP]) and findings from two physical examinations (spinal palpation tenderness [SPT], axial spinal percussion pain [ASPP]) were used to locate the VF segments identified using whole-spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The percentage of agreements and kappa coefficient were calculated. RESULTS In 20.7% (74/358), the P-RBP site and VF segments were in the same location (kappa = 0.153); 21.2% (76/358) presented with concomitant RP in 93.4% (71/76) of whom the RP dermatome was colocalized with the VF segments (kappa = 0.924); 55.0% (197/358) and 23.2% (83/358) of patients presented with positive SPT and ASPP, respectively; and in 49.2% (97/197) and 96.4% (80/83) of patients with positive SPT (kappa = 0.435) and ASPP (kappa = 0.963), the positive finding and the VF segments were consistently colocalized. CONCLUSIONS The positive finding of RP or ASPP is useful in determining the spinal range for imaging tests, while an MRI scan covering the whole thoracic and lumbar spine is necessary in VF-suspected patients with P-RBP or positive SPT, indicating that caution is necessary when using symptoms or physical examination findings to localize VFs.The magnitude of hip impact force during a fall on the ground (i.e., concrete surface) from standing height was determined. INTRODUCTION We determined the magnitude of hip impact force that humans may experience in the event of a fall from standing height on the ground, in order to examine how the hip impact force was affected by characteristics of a fall. METHODS Twenty subjects mimicked a typical older adults' falls on a mat. Trials were acquired with three initial fall directions forward, sideways, and backward. Trials were also acquired with three knee positions at the time of hip impact knee together, knee on the mat, and free knee. During falls, attenuated vertical hip impact forces and corresponding depression of the mat were measured via a force plate placed under the mat and motion capture system, respectively. Using a mass-spring model, actual hip impact force and body stiffness during a fall on the ground were estimated. RESULTS Hip impact force averaged 4.0 kN (SD = 1.7). The hip impact force was associated with knee condition (F = 25.6, p less then 0.005), but not with fall direction (F = 0.4, p = 0.599). Compared with "knee on the mat," hip impact force averaged 59% and 45% greater in "free knee" and "knee together," respectively (4.6 versus 2.9 kN, p less then 0.005; 4.3 versus 2.9 kN, p less then 0.005). However, the hip impact force did not differ between "free knee" and "knee together (4.6 versus 4.3 kN, p = 0.554). We adopted the chronic atrioventricular block beagle dogs (n = 4), having a pathophysiology of bradycardia-associated, volume overload-induced chronic heart failure, in which the atrial fibrillation was induced by 10 s of burst pacing on atrial septum. AVE0118 in doses of 0.24 and 1.2 mg/kg, i.v. over 10 min hardly altered electrophysiological variables. Meanwhile, AVE0118 in a dose of 6 mg/kg, i.v. over 10 min delayed the inter-atrial conduction in a frequency-dependent manner and prolonged the atrial effective refractory period in a reverse frequency-dependent manner, whereas it did not significantly alter the duration of atrial fibrillation or its cycle length. The increment of atrial effective refractory period was 3.3 times greater compared with that of ventricular one at a basic cycle length of 400 ms.
