An increasing number of higher education healthcare students from developed countries are undertaking short-term learning abroad programs in developing countries. However, sociocultural differences between the students and the communities could lead to unintended, possibly negative consequences for the community. Suzetrigine supplier The objective of this review was to explore what is known about the impact of learning abroad programs undertaken by healthcare students on the communities in the developing countries who host them.

The six-step scoping review developed by Arksey and O'Malley (2005) provided a methodological framework for searching the literature and identifying records meeting the inclusion criteria.

A comprehensive range of databases were used to facilitate the literature search (including CINHAHL, EBSCO, ERIC, Google Scholar, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science).

A two-stage review process was undertaken. Stage 1 reviewed articles on learning abroad undertaken in developing countries by higher eduied that most of the published research on learning abroad in developing countries focusses almost exclusively on the impact the programs have on the students, with a paucity of research considering how they impact host communities. Our findings suggest the need to further extend and strengthen the research on the host communities in order to understand the impact higher education healthcare students have on the international communities who host them.

Tropomyosin (TPM), an actin-binding protein widely expressed across different cell types, is primarily involved in cellular contractile processes. We investigated whether TPM3 physically and functionally interacts with stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1) to contribute to vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) contraction, store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), and high-salt intake-induced hypertension in rats.

Analysis of a rat RNA-seq data set of 80 samples showed that the STIM1 and Tpm3 transcriptome expression pattern is highly correlated, and co-immunoprecipitation results indicated that TPM3 and STIM1 proteins physically interacted in rat VSMCs. Immunohistochemical data displayed obvious co-localization of TPM3 and STIM1 in rat VSMCs. Knockdown of TPM3 or STIM1 in VSMCs with specific small interfering RNA significantly suppressed contractions in tension measurement assays and decreased SOCE in calcium assays. Rats fed a high-salt diet for 4 weeks had significantly higher systolic blood pressure than controls, with significantly increased contractility and markedly increased TPM3 and STIM1 expression levels in the mesenteric resistance artery (shown by tension measurements and immunoblotting, respectively). Additionally, high salt environment in vitro induced significant enhancement of TPM3 and STIM1 expression levels in VSMCs.

We showed for the first time that TPM3 and STIM1 physically and functionally interact to contribute to VSMC contraction, SOCE, and high-salt intake-induced hypertension. Our findings provide mechanistic insights and offer a potential therapeutic target for high-salt intake-induced hypertension.

Cancer patients are frequently immunocompromised and subject to refractory infection and relapse of leukemia, due to the cytotoxic agents and immunosuppressive glucocorticoids in the chemotherapy regimens. Bu Shen Hui Yang Fang (BSHY), a traditional Chinese compound, was widely used in China to enhance the immune system of leukemia patients combined with chemotherapy and effectively lowered their risk of infection, with specific mechanism unknown yet. Thus, we investigated the effects of BSHY on the immune system using immunosuppressive mouse models. By analyzing the immune system of immunosuppressed BALB/C mice induced by hydrocortisone, we found an increase of CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes in the spleens of mice after BSHY treatment. Furthermore, we found the enhanced immune system in BSHY treated group was due to increased proliferation and decreased apoptosis of lymphocytes. Cytokine array analysis revealed that interleukin 4 (IL-4) was reduced in the plasma of immunosuppressed mice but returned to a normal level after BSHY treatment. Moreover, we found IL-4 was an adverse prognostic factor in acute myeloid leukemia patients and part of them could be elevated by BSHY. Mechanistically, we found BSHY enhances the proliferation of lymphocytes in a Stat6-dependent manner. In summary, our current study demonstrates that BSHY enhances the proliferation of lymphocytes in the immunosuppressed mice via upregulating IL-4 signaling.

Lindera aggregata is a main Chinese herb of ancient prescriptions Suoquan pill applied for treating the chronic kidney disease (CKD). A large number of application histories of Lindera aggregata in the treatment of CKD have been recorded in Chinese traditional medical literature. The previous reports revealed that Lindera aggregata can treat CKD.

Rats were randomly divided into control, model, Huangkui,Lindera aggregata ethanol extract (LEE) and Lindera aggregata water extract (LWE) groups. hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was used to detect the pathology of kidney. The levels of serum creatinine (Scr), serum Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), urine protein (UP), kidney index(KI) were evaluated. The UPLC - QTOF/MS were applied to probe the metabolic profile. Furthermore, Indoxyl sulfate-induced human renal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cell model was built to determine the expression levels of pathogenesis-related proteins.

The results demonstrated that LEE and LWE significantly inhibited the rebound in Scr, BUN, NGAL, UP and KI in models, except for the effect of LWE at low dose (LWE-L) and LEE at low dose (LEE-L) on KI and the effect of LWE-H at high dose (LWE-H) and LEE-L on BUN and NGAL.
