Amphiphiles alter the energy of surfaces, but the extent of this feature is typically constant. Smart systems with amphiphilicity as a function of an external, physical trigger are desirable. As a trigger, the exposure to a magnetic field, in particular, is attractive because it is not shielded in water. Amphiphiles like surfactants are well known, but the magnetic response of molecules is typically weak. Vice-versa, magnetic particles with strong response to magnetic triggers are fully established in nanoscience, but they are not amphiphilic. In this work colloids with Janus architecture and ultra-small dimensions (25 nm) have been prepared by spatial control over the thiol-yne click modification of organosilica-magnetite core-shell nanoparticles. The amphiphilic properties of these anisotropically modified particles are proven. Finally, a pronounced and reversible change in interfacial stabilization results from the application of a weak ( less then 1 T) magnetic field. © 2020 The Authors. Published by Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.BACKGROUND Fever and respiratory symptoms are the major causes of hospitalisation in infants aged 90 days or less. Respiratory viruses (RVs) are detected by multiplex reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) in up to 70% of infants tested in this population. Aminotransferase elevation is not uncommon in RV infections, and repeat laboratory investigations are frequent due to concerns regarding the occurrence of hepatic disease. METHODS This retrospective observational cohort study included 271 infants aged 8-90 days, with positive RV mRT-PCR results. Data were obtained on demographics, laboratory results and final diagnoses of hepatobiliary disease. RESULTS Fever (73.1%) and/or respiratory symptoms (75.6%) were the major presentations among the hospitalised infants. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) or alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were elevated in 62 (22.9%) of the 271 infants. Twenty-four of these 62 infants had their first follow-up, and 19 (79.2%) showed persistent elevation. All 10 (100%) infants who had their second follow-up showed persistently elevated aminotransferase levels. Eventually, none of the 10 infants were diagnosed with hepatic disease during the median follow-up of 10 days (range 3-232 days). Among the RVs of interest, parainfluenza virus type 1 was significantly associated with aminotransferase elevation (odds ratio 2.95; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.11-7.83). CONCLUSIONS RV-related non-specific hepatitis is occasionally observed in infants aged 8-90 days, and ALT elevation is the most common abnormality. However, a final diagnosis of primary hepatobiliary disease appears to be rare. Therefore, regular follow-ups and targeted testing may be recommended in this specific population. © 2020 The Authors. Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.We establish a facial and large scale compatible fabrication route affording a high performance heterogeneous plasmonic-based photoelectrode for water oxidation that incorporates a CoFe-Prussian blue analog (PBA) structure as the water oxidation catalytic center. For this purpose, an angled deposition of gold (Au) was used to selectively coat the tips of the bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) nanostructures, yielding Au capped BiVO4 (Au-BiVO4). The formation of multiple size/dimension Au capping islands provides strong light-matter interaction at nanoscale dimensions. These plasmonic particles not only enhance light absorption in the bulk BiVO4 (through the excitation of Fabry-Perot (FP) modes) but also contribute to photocurrent generation via the injection of sub-bandgap hot electrons. To substantiate the activity of the photoanodes, the interfacial electron dynamics is significantly improved using a PBA water oxidation catalyst (WOC) resulting in Au-BiVO4/PBA assembly. At 1.23 V vs RHE, the photocurrent value for a bare BiVO4 photoanode was obtained as 190 µA cm-2, while it was boosted to 295 µA cm-2, and 1,800 µA cm-2 for Au-BiVO4, and Au-BiVO4/PBA, respectively. Our results suggest that this simple and facial synthetic approach paves the way for plasmonic-based solar water splitting, in which a variety of common metals and semiconductors can be employed in conjunction with catalyst designs. KGaA, Weinheim.INTRODUCTION Hypertension is multifactorial, highly prevalent in the hemodialysis (HD) population and its adequate control requires, in addition to adequate volume management, often the use of multiple antihypertensive drugs. We aimed to describe the use of antihypertensive agents in a group of HD patients and to evaluate the factors associated with the use of multiple classes (≥3) of antihypertensives. METHODS We analyzed the baseline data from the HDFit study. Clinically stable patients with HD vintage between 3 and 24 months without any severe mobility limitation were recruited from sites throughout southern Brazil. Fluid status was measured pre-dialysis with the Body Composition Monitor (BCM; Fresenius, Germany). Fluid overload (FO) was considered when the overhydration index (OH) was greater than 7% of extracellular water (OH/ECW > 7%) and overweight was defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m2 . Prescriptions of antihypertensive drugs were obtained from participants' reports and medical or Hemodialysis.AIMS This trial was conducted to determine the efficacy of umbilical vein injection of 400 versus 800 μg misoprostol to deliver retained placenta and to compare both regimens regarding the time of placental delivery and amount of vaginal blood loss. METHODS A double-blind, multicenter randomized clinical trial was undertaken in four teaching hospitals in the North of Iraq and Al-Azhar University Hospital in Egypt, from March 2016 to May 2019. Group I (274 women) received 400 μg misoprostol and group II (249 women) received 800 μg misoprostol. Data regarding the time of placental separation and amount of vaginal blood loss were analyzed and proportions were compared between groups using Chi-squared test. Mean values were compared using the Student's t-test. The Mann-Whitney test was used to determine the median of vaginal blood loss. RESULTS The proportion of placental separation was 84.3% among women in group I and 86.7% of women in group II. The mean time of placental separation was 18.86 ± 234.2 and 17.86 ± 213.
